Josh McRoberts: Another slap in the face from 2K Sports

Josh McRoberts is Indiana's starting power forward. That alone is fairly sound logic that he is a decent player and should have a higher rating than, oh, I don't know, Malik Allen, Derrick Caracter, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Eduardo Najera, TAYLOR GRIFFIN (I could go on and on, since McRoberts is ranked 96th among PF by 2K Sports)...

But then, this is 2K Sports. Their logic dictates that Melvin Ely should be in the free agent pool instead of Coby Karl. Two roster updates into the regular season, mind you.

Here's the list of McRoberts' rating boosts from 2K's latest update.

56 Overall (+2)
40 OffAwr (+10)
48 DefAwr (+5)

This is apparently all they could find wrong with him. Isn't that just grand?

McRoberts went 8-23 from 3pt range last season, and was 1-2 last night. 2K saw nothing wrong with his 3pt rating, a paltry 27.

McRoberts grabbed 6 rebounds in only 24 minutes yesterday. He had 18.2 defensive rebounding percentage last year, and is at 19.3 for his career. Yet this is only grounds for a 49 in the world of the 2K Insider, while Dirk and his 20.2 run around with an 86 rating.

Speaking of those 24 minutes, McRoberts only has 70 stamina despite being an athletic 23 year old. But then, with 45 speed and 48 quickness, he isn't exactly athletic.

Clearly, it's McRoberts' basketball IQ that is allowing him to get by - after all, those are the only ratings 2K bothered to upgrade (ones that "coincidentally" have the most significant effect on overall rating). That's why McRoberts (40 Off, 48 Def), a player that earned a starting role in the NBA, is on par with Sean Marks (40/48), a career 3rd stringer that is out of the NBA. TAYLOR GRIFFIN, a player whose career lasted 32 minutes (entirely due to his last name) has superior basketball intellect (41/65) that McRoberts can only dream of achieving. Pops Mensah-Bonsu, a career 10-day contract player who scrounged up 474 minutes across 4 seasons (compared to the 524 McRoberts played LAST season), apparently gained quite a bit of knowledge during his travels (58/49) because he too.

It is certainly not worth noting that McRoberts scored 11 points in his 24 minutes. I would never hold it against Pops that never broke 7 across his 20 games last season. Wait a second. What gives? I have a brain? Really? You don't say!

Here are MY ratings for McRoberts. I'm no genius. Just a guy with common sense and a work ethic strong enough that I can look at more than two ratings at a time and say "HMMM, SOMETHING MIGHT BE WRONG HERE".

Josh McRoberts
Overall 66 (up from 56) (54)
Inside 72 (up from 67)
Close 62 (down from 67)

OffReb 71 (up from 58)
DefReb 71 (up from 49)
OffPost 61
DefPost 62 (up from 57)
OffAwr 60 (up from 40) (30)
DefAwr 53 (up from 48) (43)
OffClutch 25
DefClutch 25
Consistency 50 (down from 60)
Stamina 77 (up from 70)

Quickness 65 (up from 48)
Strength 60
Vertical 63
Hustle 73
Durability 70
Potential 69 (up from 63)
Emotion 60 (up from 25)

McRoberts would rank 50th among PFs in 2K's rosters if he had those ratings, but then, he might actually be worth using. We don't want kids picking the Pacers over the Heat, Lakers, and Celtics now, do we?

The Real NBA 2K11 - Opening Night

FILE NAME: The Real NBA 2K11 - Opening Night!
SYSTEM: Xbox360
GAMERTAG: Real 2K Insider

This is an in-progress rebuild of my previous roster (re-started because 2K "patched" gameplay features into their previous roster).

Most stars have been fully edited (ratings & tendencies), as well as some entire teams. Off the top of my head the completed teams are the Sixers, Bobcats, Celtics, Heat, Knicks, and Lakers. The players on those teams also have 100% accurate accessories, contracts, and layup/dunk signature edits.

Coach profiles were adjusted across the league.

Rotations and player roles are 100% accurate in conjunction with my previous post.

Ratings are still nowhere near where they were in the previous update where I had 300+ players edited. The next update should be much more comprehensive.

Finally, I do not know the ETA on a PS3 roster file. I sent the data over to my PS3 collaborator and he has the ok to post when the data is implemented. The PS3 file should be ahead of where I'm at as he had more time to edit this week than I did. (I do not know his PSN tag it will be uploaded under, forgot to ask).

Enjoy the rosters. They are far from a finished product, so please bring to my attention anything that needs to be addressed.

NBA 2K11 opening night rotations & player roles

Here are the rotations and player roles that will be found in my roster, "The Real NBA 2K11". The roster will be uploaded shortly for both 360 and PS3.

Rotation information will change rapidly (as in, daily), but player roles should be mostly set in stone, give or take a few starting lineup changes.

The Real NBA 2K11

Real 2K Insider has uploaded an NBA 2K11 roster file to 2K Share for 360! Search for it by...

FILE NAME: The Real NBA 2K11
GAMERTAG: Real 2K Insider

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Hello 2K community! Welcome to the Real 2K Insider blog!

Last season I spent a great deal of time adjusting my renowned ratings to 2K's new scale. This summer I also signed up for Synergy Sports Technology (the service NBA Live/Elite was using for their tendency data), which helped me develop the best player tendencies the 2K community has ever seen.

With the grunt work out of the way, I'm not about to settle for the status quo. This season, the goal is to expand upon my work even further to bring you the most comprehensive virtual NBA experience to date.

2K Sports promised you this. However, with tendencies out of the box that destroy the realism they claim to provide, they have failed. Unless of course, Andrea Bargnani taking 30 shots per game is realistic to you (in which case you might be in the wrong place).

My current plan is to have all the player re-rated by the end of the month (actually, by the end of next week). That way any changes throughout the course of the season should be relatively minor. After that, I will begin re-working all the player tendencies - there are quite a few that are just ruining the current gameplay (I'm looking at you, hyped up "Touches" tendency).

Perhaps most importantly, after great demand I will (finally) be uploading these rosters to PS3! I do not have a time table yet, but there should definitely be a roster up by the beginning of the NBA season.

This is going to be an exciting season, and I have big things planned for not only the roster, but how the Real 2K Insider presents it's content as well.

Breaking down 2K Sports' opening night roster

Here's a nifty little review of 2K's opening night roster. You guys know how much I love the rosters this company has been putting out the last decade.

RATING CHANGES

Derrick Rose
87 Overall (+2)
81 OBD (+1)
95 OffAwr (+3)
76 DefAwr (+6)
99 Stamina (+2)
Analysis: The overrated get more overrated... were people really complaining that Rose wasn't rated higher than an all-star PF?

Andre Iguodala
Position: SG (from SF)
86 Overall (+1)
Analysis: No rating changes, just a position switch. Anyone else find it comical that Iggy doesn't average 20 ppg, can't make an all-star team, can't lead a team to the playoffs, but annually gets ratings on par with Brandon Roy?

Russell Westbrook
85 Overall (+4)
86 Inside (+1)
76 Medium (+1)
78 FT (-2)
56 OffReb (+6)
41 DefReb (+2)
70 Consistency (+45)
99 Stamina (+4)
96 Speed (+3)
98 Quick (+2)
Analysis: Westbrook's consistency obviously needed a big boost. I'm not so sure about the speed/quickness, but I suppose if you're going to overrate Derrick Rose and John Wall in those categories, Russell Westbrook better be right there with them.

Kevin Love
76 Overall (+2)
43 Pass (+12)
75 OffAwr (+8)
65 DefAwr (+10)
Analysis: A start, but let's get real, he is far from a finished rating product. He is less athletic than 38 year old Shaq.

Thaddeus Young
Position: SF (from PF)
+5 Overall (+5)
Analysis: This is why we don't weigh overall too heavily around here, especially for players caught between positions. It's worth noting that the 2K Insider did NOT lower Young's Mid-range rating from it's incredulously high 86. I know for a fact that this was brought to 2K's attention NUMEROUS times over the last month. Apparently the fans AND stats lie.

Nicolas Batum
75 Overall (+6)
87 Inside (+3)
77 Medium (+6)
83 3pt (-2)
70 SOD (+2) - For a spot-up player? 2K does watch the games, right?
70 Handle (+6)
64 Off-Hand (+6)
54 Security (+3)
44 Pass (+4)
67 Block (+15) - Completely unwarranted, he ain't Kirilenko.
71 Steal (+3)
72 Hands (+11)
82 OBD (+2)
45 OffReb (-17)
56 DefReb (+10)
53 PostOff (+12)
66 PostDef (+3)
60 OffAwr (+2)
79 DefAwr (+9) - I had 78.
40 DefClutch (+15) - This is where I had it.
50 Consistency (+25) - This is where I had it.
88 Stamina (+3)
78 Speed (+9) - I had 79.
76 Quick (+4)
78 Potential (+6)
Analysis: Nice to see a very comprehensive edit, but some of these values are out of left field, and surely designed to boost him to his currently lofty overall.

VARIOUS ROSTER ERRORS
Sundiata Gaines still on Jazz
Ronald Dupree still on Raptors
Dwayne Jones still on Suns
Coby Karl still on Nuggets (he only signed in Spain A MONTH AGO...)
Melvin Ely still missing from Nuggets roster (thousand bucks says they don't even know he's in the FA pool)
Lester Hudson still missing from Wizards roster
Maurice Ager is still mising from the Wolves roster
Royal Ivey is still missing from Thunder roster... even though he signed a guaranteed contract with the team over the summer. 2K Insider my ass.

PLAYERS GONE AWOL
Allen Iverson (SG/PG)
Sergio Rodriguez (PG) - Actually, he didn't even make it into the 2K10 defaults.

Stephon Marbury, who left for China LAST SEASON, and just signed a THREE YEAR CONTRACT to stay in China for the rest of his professional career, remains in the game.

Brevin Knight and Malik Rose, who retired last season to call Bobcats and Knick games, also remain in the game.

Lindsey Hunter, who retired in the middle of last season to become an assistant coach, he's still here too.

Mark Madsen is a D-League coach, and retired almost 2 years ago now. He's still in the game.

Jerome James... nevermind, it still hurts to talk about it.

The last court Kirk Snyder stepped foot into sentenced him to prison. He's still in the game. Who wants to place bets that he's removed from prison before he's removed from 2K's rosters?

Lynn Greer and Vassilis Spanoulis, who played one season each in the NBA back in 2007 before returning to Europe, they too remain in the game.

Ha-Seung Jin hasn't played in the NBA since 2006. It's been 5 years. He's still in the game.

Jared Jordan, Devon Hardin, and Brandon Wallace have NEVER played a single NBA game in their lives. They're still in the game.

But the second Allen Iverson (a five-time 2K coverboy) signs in Turkey? Gone the next day.

MAKING FUN OF 2K'S INJURIES
My favorite part of the night, reserved for my least favorite part about 2K's rosters (and I'm far from alone in this regard). Time to laugh at the injuries that us common users cannot remove.

YELLOW - Still playable, and still trying to figure out why this is given to players who are NOT playing through their injuries. Give it to guys like Iguodala.
(CHA) Dominic McGuire: Shin Splints (4-6 weeks)
(MIL) Darington Hobson: Bruised Hip (12-14 months) - Um, why isn't he red?
(CHI) Carlos Boozer: Broken Finger (6-8 weeks)
(SAC) Samuel Dalember: Bruised Hip (4-6 weeks)
(NYK) Eddy Curry: Strained Hamstring (6-8 months) - I can't help but laugh at the unintentional accuracy of this one. In reality though, Curry should be healthy in November.
(ORL) Daniel Orton: Sore Knee (8-10 weeks)
(MIN) Jonny Flynn: Bruised Hip (4-6 months) - He sounds like he'll be back in two weeks.
(GSW) Louis Amundson: Broken Finger (4-6 weeks)

RED - Not playable. Oh, and you also can't release them. POINTLESS RESTRICTIONS FTW
(MIL) Michael Redd: Torn ACL (12-14 months) - He's working towards a March return.
(BOS) Kendrick Perkins: Torn MCL (8-10 months) - He'll be back in February, if not January.
(BOS) Delonte West: Suspended (2-4 weeks)
(MIA) Mike Miller: Torn Hand Ligament (1-2 months) - Apparently January is 6 weeks from now.
(UTA) Mehmet Okur: Torn Achilles (8-10 months) - He'll be back in December.
(NYK) Kelenna Azubuike: Torn Patellar Tendon (12-14 months)
(LAL) Andrew Bynum: Arthoscopic Surgery (4-6 Months) - December is a long time from now. I still have half a year to go christmas shopping.
(DAL) Rodrigue Beaubois: Broken Foot (2-4 months) - He'll be back in November.
(DEN) Kenyon Martin: Arthoscopic Surgery (6-8 months) - Shooting for January 1st.
(DEN) Chris Andersen: Torn Patellar Tendon (4-6 months) - Shooting for December 1st.
(IND) Kareem Rush: Suspended (1-2 weeks)
(DET) Terrico White: Broken Foot (8-10 weeks) - OH MY GOD! A RETURN DATE THAT'S FINALLY ACCURATE!
(DET) Jonas Jerebko: Torn Achilles (4-6 months) - SEE ABOVE!
(TOR) Ed Davis: Arthoscopic Surgery (8-10 weeks)
(POR) Greg Oden: Broken Patella (12-14 months) - Fortune telling at it's finest.
(POR) Joel Przybilla: Torn Patellar Tendon (10-12 months) - He is already practicing with the team.
(GSW) Ekpe Udoh: Broken Wrist (6-8 months) - Coming back in January.
(WAS) Josh Howard: Torn ACL (10-12 months) - Coming back in December, if not November.
(FA) Jeff Pendergraph: Torn ACL (10-12 months)

INJURED PLAYERS WHO AREN'T INJURED!
(PHI) Andre Iguodala
(CHA) Kwame Brown: Should be out at least another 2 weeks.
(MIL) Chris Douglas-Roberts: Eye surgery announced date of roster release. 2K gets a break.
(MEM) Marc Gasol
(SAS) Tiago Splitter

I'm sure there's a few others.

The more I see these 2K rosters, the more I am convinced that the 2K Insider is a techie/suit that simply doesn't watch the NBA.

Made my first slider edit.

I finally bit the bullet and adjusted some 2K sliders

-5 Dunk in Traffic
-5 Contact Shot Success

The funny thing is the #1 slider I'd want to change DOESN'T EVEN EXIST! There is not a single slider that affects the post game. Not Offense, not defense, not even LPS.

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS
41-78 2PT
1-12 3PT
24-34 FT
21 Paint FG

DUNKS x3
Holiday: Fastbreak (w/Gerald Wallace trailing behind)
Iguodala: Double screen play, getting a step on Stephen Jackson
Hawes: And 1 after an offensive rebound (clear path).

AND 1's x7
Iguodala: Drive to lane, barely any contact to be honest.
Brand: Shot after an offensive rebound
Brand: Play that started with him posting Augustin. Is it too much to ask for 2K to get the PG to guard the PG? Mismatches happen after picks and screens, not made baskets and rebounds.
Hawes: Dunk after an offensive rebound.
Turner: Layup after an extremely successful play (CPU didn't even try to follow Turner coming off a screen), leading to desperation block attempt that failed.
Speights: Lowpost after an offensive rebound.
Nocioni: Layup after an offensive rebound.

Slider changes seemed to fix the excessive dunking, as only one could be termed "In Traffic" and it was by one of the league's best dunkers. If only there were something that could be done about the post game (like, improving post defense ten-fold), teams would post realistic FG%. It also reduced And 1's but could use another decrease. Four of the seven And 1's occurred after an offensive rebound, which is likely when the CPU is at it's most desperate (not exactly unrealistic). Still, it'd be nice to see more of these roll out.

CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
40-71 2PT
2-11 3PT
25-35 FT
20 Paint FG

DUNKS x4
Jackson: Spin dunk on a fastbreak
Wallace: Putback dunk
Livingston: Fastbreak dunk
D.Brown: Standing dunk after an offensive rebound

AND 1'S x7
Jackson: Hopstep layup draws contact on Hawes who came over to try and block the shot
Jackson: Contested fastbreak shot
Wallace: Low-post on Kapono (what else needs to be said?)
Wallace: Fastbreak layup
Diaw: Fastbreak layup (dish from Augustin)
Diaw: Terrible defense by Brand leads to clear path for Diaw to swoop to hoop (Speights fouls trying for block). Brand is standing next to Diaw instead of blocking his path to the basket. Augustin walks up to Brand and wraps a pass around him to Diaw. Making things worse, Brand also goes for the steal, rather than shifting to block his man's easy path. The defensive AI in this game is STILL atrocious.
Thomas: Post-up on Kapono

The Bobcats didn't have any traffic dunks, and the only one I didn't really care for was Brown's (though I can simply reduce his standing dunk to fix that). Unlike the Sixers, the Bobcats got no fouls off rebounds, though they did draw three on the fastbreak.

Overall the FG% was much lower than previous games, so it's certainly a start. I'm happy with the amount of dunks there are, so continuing to lowering contact success further should help reduce it even further. I'm confident And 1's can be reduced to a suitable number, but am still very concerned about the post-game. With no sliders to affect the post game, the only thing we've got to work with are ratings. I'm hopeful that reducing contact shots will help, because it's just much too efficient. DeSagana Diop had a successful post jumper with the clock running down. That should work maybe one in seven times in real life. Posting up is one of the least efficient forms of scoring in real life (along with Isolating), because it's going 1-on-1 against a defender, yet 2K seems to think that the post is about erasing that defender from the picture.

These rosters suck, and hard fouls are meaningless

I ran a sim and the Knicks had 10 "And 1" plays. I got so pissed off I decided to raise every player's Hard Foul tendency to 100 and run another sim. The Knicks again had 10 "And 1" plays. It has zero effect, aside from both teams shooting about 10 more FTs that game.

1ST QUARTER
10:48 - Wilson Chandler
A clearout for Chandler, who has Spencer Hawes on him. Teardrop and the foul.

8:24 - Amare Stoudemire
Elton Brand tries to draw a charge on an Amare dunk. Big mistake.

41.7 - Wilson Chandler
Chandler brings the ball up, but defense never picks him up until he's at the rim taking a layup (foul on Nocioni).

2ND QUARTER
1:18 - Amare Stoudemire
Amare isolates on Spencer Hawes. You can figure out the rest.

Things are going kinda smoothly now, aren't they? Only 4 "And 1's" and two belong to Amare. That's livable, right?

3RD QUARTER
7:58 - Timofey Mozgov
Amare lobs an inbound pass from mid-court to Mozgov deep in the post. He draws the foul on Speights who offered little post resistance.

3:50 - Ronny Turiaf
Turiaf drives on Brand, spins, and draws a bump from Thaddeus Young.

2:59 - Ronny Turiaf
Turiaf drives on Brand again, drawing a bump, and making a shot adjustment on his layup.

1:49 - Ronny Turiaf
Turiaf posting up on Young, draws the foul on Brand's help defense.

34.8 - Ronny Turiaf
Amare catches underneath, dishes to Turiaf, and draws a foul on Hawes who goes for the block.

4TH QUARTER
4:38 - Toney Douglas
Douglas brings the ball up, the defense never really puts a body on him until he's at the rim taking a layup (foul on Turner).

The time on those shots matters just as much as the player who hit them. Turiaf had four straight "And 1" plays. That is ABSURD. Almost as abusrd as the Sixers having 12 of their own "And 1" plays, giving us a game total of 22. This is a last straw of sorts for me.

I restarted my roster because I'd heard the gameplay had improved with this "roster patch", but the truth is it has not. Yes, 3pt% has improved, and players no longer move like their feet are in the mud, but players get to the rim for layups and dunks far too easily now. Teams are shooting 60% from the field and half of their points are coming in the paint.

23 of PHI's 57 FGM were in the paint, and 12 were "And 1".
34 of NY's 52 FGM were in the paint, and 10 were "And 1".

This is NBA 2K10 with pretty jumpers and half-assed Jordan teams that didn't have to be downloaded off 2K Share. It seems like the deeper we go, the worse things become.

For the first time in eight years... I might have to make a slider set. This game is simply not playable from a simulation standpoint.

Darius Songaila & the 2K Insider

I discovered some rating changes to Darius Songaila while making my Sixers edits.

65 Overall (+3) - This is where I had it.
80 Close (-9) - This is where I had it.

81 FT (-11) - His season%; I have him at 85, his career% (3 years prior: 89, 92, 85).
67 LPS (+13) - I had 64.
49 OffReb (-5) - This is where I had it.
56 DefReb (+9) - This is where I had it.

65 OffPost (+8) - I had 67. Basically a switch of my LPS/OffPost, no biggie.
63 DefPost (+8) - I still have 55
57 DefAwr (+17) - I had 55.
74 Stamina (+4) - I have 77.
68 Hustle (+4) - I still have 64.

Now, before I begin... NO, I AM NOT ACCUSING 2K OF COPYING ME. It is actually the other way around.

You see, last season I cracked 2K's rating scales. It's only natural for their updated ratings to reflect my own since we are both using the same source material and scale.

However, this essentially proves what I have been saying for quite some time - that 2K applies this scale SELECTIVELY.

ORB% & OffReb
12.0% Tyson Chandler (71) - Career 12.8%
11.4% Pau Gasol (95) - Career 8.8%
6.3% Troy Murphy (63)
4.8% Darius Songaila (49)
3.1% Dirk Nowitzki (52)

DRB% & DefReb
28.5% Troy Murphy (89) - Lead league in 2009 w/ 32.0%
22.7% Pau Gasol (88)
21.0% Tyson Chandler (70)
20.1% Dirk Nowitzki (86)
14.7% Darius Songaila (56)

These values are all over the place! Gasol and Dirk have mega-inflated ratings (due to their name, rather than their game), while Tyson Chandler (who is a rebound/defense role player) totally gets the shaft here.

And yet as Darius Songaila shows us... 2K Sports knows EXACTLY what to rate these players. They merely CHOOSE not to.

Of course, I'm sure you'd like harder evidence than my Songaila numbers being identical (hey, maybe they DID steal them, or maybe it's just a coincidence!). Fine. Let's go right to the tippy top. COVER BOY.

Michael Jordan ORB% & DRB%
1986: 53 & 42
1990: 51 & 60
1991: 51 & 60
1992: 48 & 55
1995: 46 & 62
1996: 54 & 57
1997: 45 & 51
1998: 48 & 48

Jordan's rebound ratings are one of his few ratings that actually fluctuate from year to year. That's because they went straight off his statistical output.

Michael Jordan OffReb & DefReb
1986: 5.6 & 10.7
1990: 5.3 & 15.6
1991: 4.6 & 14.3
1992: 3.5 & 15.3
1995: 4.4 & 16.2
1996: 5.6 & 14.9
1997: 4.2 & 13.2
1998: 4.7 & 12.5

Not the easiest to read, so let's dumb it down

ORB%
5.6 = 54 (1996)
5.6 = 53 (1986)
5.3 = 51 (1990)
4.8 = 49 (Darius Songaila)
4.7 = 48 (1998)
4.6 = 51 (1991)
4.4 = 46 (1995)
4.2 = 45 (1997)
3.5 = 48 (1992)

With the exception of two seasons, these are all following a scale. I threw in Mr. Songaila for good measure - he fits like a glove.

DRB%
16.2 = 62 (1995)
15.6 = 60 (1990)
15.3 = 55 (1992)
14.9 = 57 (1996)
14.7 = 56 (Darius Songaila)
14.3 = 60 (1991)
13.2 = 51 (1997)
12.5 = 48 (1998)
10.7 = 42 (1986)

As with offensive rebounding, there are two seasons where Jordan isn't following scale, one of which he is actually underrated (1992), and the other being 1991 again. As with before, Songaila fits like a glove. 2K Sports knows EXACTLY what they are doing regarding rebound ratings.

Personally, I think if the scale is good enough for MICHAEL JORDAN, then it should be good enough for Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol (not to mention every other player in the NBA).

Maybe that's just me. It's certainly not 2K.

Houston, we have a problem. There are 69 players with Touch 60-99 vs 250 players with Touch 20-49. There is simply too much separation from a few select players and everyone else, which is leading to the shot imbalances.

This is not to say just lowering the higher ups is a blanket solution. The problem seems to be a little more widespread and specific than that... best illustrated by breaking it down by positions.

PGs are all extremely low, whereas PF/C are all extremely high. I understand 2K was trying to get more post play (and thus a "sim" game), but gone are the days of the 80s and 90s when post players dominated the league. It's pretty clear now that positions affected their rating scale. Nevermind that we've got discrepancies like Roy Hibbert being Indiana's go-to guy instead of Danny Granger. We've got Spencer Hawes getting more plays than Andre Iguodala; Darko Milicic getting as many plays as Tyreke Evans; Andris Biedrins and Ben Wallace getting more plays than Kevin Martin,

I heard one of my detractors say all that's needed is some edits to key players... that would honestly depend on your definition of "some", because to me, it looks like more than half of the league is off by at least 10 points. Which is why I was "testing" different values in the first place.

UGH, why dunks, WHY?

Edited ratings/tendencies (except for touches) for the Lakers and ran a sim against the Knicks.

The Knicks did something they never did against my un-edited Nets team - attack the rim with ferocity.

RAYMOND FELTON
The Line: 12 points, 12 assists, 3 turnovers (3-9 FG, 0-3 3PT, 6-7 FT)
What Happened: All three of Felton's baskets were "And One" layups.

WILSON CHANDLER
The Line: 17 points (5-8 FG, 0-0 3PT, 7-7 FT)
What Happened: Chandler had an "And One" dunk that rattled in. He obviously got 7 FTA from attacking the rim a lot. I don't have too much of a problem though, because the rest of his shots were Isolation jumpers.

DANILO GALLINARI
The Line: 13 points (4-9 FG, 2-7 3PT, 3-4 FTA)
What Happened: Two open threes, two semi-fastbreak dunks. I won't complain about the two dunks, because those were his only non-3PA of the night.

AMARE STOUDEMIRE
The Line: 30 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists (10-15 FG, 10-11 FT)
What Happened: Gasol and Odom simply could not keep up with Amare. That's accurate, but I felt there were 2 dunks Amare had that came too easily (due to the animation). In total he had 4 dunks, 3 layups, and 2 jumpers.

TIMOFEY MOZGOV
The Line: 6 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks (2-5 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT)
What Happened: Both shots were dunks. One off a cut, one off a rebound.

RONNY TURIAF
The Line: 10 points, 2 blocks (4-6 FG, 2-2 FT)
What happened: All 4 shots were dunks. This is what pissed me off and made me write this.
Dunk #1: Ratliff contests Felton's shot but he passes out to Turiaf who has a clear path. I didn't like this before but it's mainly the CPU defense's fault rather than a baseline exploit. Dunk#2: Amare passes from top of 3pt arch to Turiaf (who has to gather the ball). Turiaf then does a standing dunk. I would have preferred this pass go out of bounds given the passer & receiver.
Dunk#3: Fastbreak dunk off pass from Gallinari. I'm okay with this - it's why I boosted PF/C speed.
Dunk#4: Dunk off a basket cut from the Double Roll play. I'm definitely okay with that.

So really, I'm OKAY with the results... and I suppose it's better than him scoring on post-ups... and this is exactly what I wanted... I just don't like when there are too many dunks is all.

TONEY DOUGLAS
The Line: 5 points, 5 assists, 0 TO (2-3 FG, 1-1 3PT)
What Happened: A three off Douglas' favorite screen play, and a fastbreak layup.

ANTHONY RANDOLPH
The Line: 13 points, 6 rebounds (5-7 FG, 3-3 FT)
What Happened: Surprisingly, only one dunk. Randolph had a mid-range shot off a broken pass, a fastbreak layup, a pick and roll layup, a putback off a rebound, and his dunk was also a putback but a strange one. He rebounded the ball, FAKED A PASS, and then went up for his standing dunk. The defense didn't react to the pass fake, and really should have been trying to swarm him, but instead just watched Randolph gather himself.

ROGER MASON
The Line: 14 points (7-17 FG, 0-4 3PT, 0-0 FT)
What Happened: Mason scored 6 times via his favorite screen play. I think it's time to take it out of his repertoire.

BILL WALKER
The Line: 11 points (4-5 FG, 1-1 3PT, 2-3 FT)
What Happened: One fastbreak dunk, two Iso jumpers, one "and one" layup off a cut

KNICKS SUMMARY
Aside from the usual Mason rubbish, Knicks didn't run too many plays (at least plays that worked). In total there were 15 dunks, and I'd like to try and cut that number in half. I might have to drop some dunk ratings to do it.

LAKERS

I'm not going to get too into detail on the Lakers since I didn't adjust their touches and haven't analyzed their playbooks.

DEREK FISHER
The Line: 4 points, 2 assists (1-3 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT)

KOBE BRYANT
The Line: 46 points (19-32 FG, 1-1 3PT, 7-10 FT)
What Happened: It's better to just make a list.
Iso Drives: 4 (one dunk)
Iso Jumper: 3 (one with foot on 3pt line)
Post-Ups: 4
Spot-Ups: 4 (one three, one with foot on 3pt line)
Off-Screen Jumper: 3
Fastbreaks: 1

I'd heard that Kobe was taking too many off-screen jumpers before, so it seems my tendency changes fixed that.

RON ARTEST
The Line: 8 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 TO (2-6 FG, 1-3 3PT, 3-4 FT)

LAMAR ODOM
The Line: 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks (5-8 FG, 1-2 3PT, 4-6 FT)

PAU GASOL
The Line: 36 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists (14-22 FG, 8-9 FT)

SHANNON BROWN
The Line: 8 points (3-4 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-1 FT)

STEVE BLAKE
The Line: 5 points, 3 assists (2-2 FG, 1-1 3PT)

MATT BARNES
The Line: 0 points (0-3 FG, 0-2 3PT)

THEO RATLIFF
The Line: 0 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists (0-2 FG)

DERRICK CARACTER
The Line: 2 points (1-1 FG)

SUMMARY
The Lakers only had three dunks (one for Kobe, one for Gasol, one for Brown), which I found a bit surprising, especially since Kobe took a lot of shots. Of course, the presence of Andrew Bynum probably would have changed all that.

Looks like it's time to make some Touch adjustments, and solve Roger Mason once and for all.

Editing Touch Tendency, part 2

It's time to run another simulation using everything we learned from previous simulations. I have since adjusted touches tendencies for the Knicks based on their usage rates, and their new values are as follows.

TOUCHES
69 Felton
63 Stoudemire
60 Douglas
58 Mason
43 Turiaf
43 Curry
41 Randolph
32 Gallinari
32 Mozgov
31 Chandler
20 Rautins
7 Walker

KNICKS LINEUP (Touches in parenthasize)
Felton (69), Chandler (31), Gallinari (32), Stoudemire (63), Mozgov (32)

NO PLAY
Gallinari hesitation into a contested fadeaway.
RESULT: SCORE (Gallinari 0-1 FG)

NO PLAY
Gallinari drills an open triple when his man left to double Felton.
RESULT: SCORE (Gallinari 1-2 FG, 1-1 3PT)

NO PLAY
Gallinari gives it to Mozgov in the post, gets fouled and goes to line.
RESULT: FOUL (Mozgov 1-2 FT)

NO PLAY
Amare catches, makes some jab moves, pulls up for a mid-range jumper. No dribbles. He misses the shot, but it's the first quarter, and he's taken a shot!
RESULT: MISS (Amare 0-1 FG)

PF PLAY - 14 DIVE
Felton's pass to Amare gets intercepted. Amare comes off a Mozgov screen but Lopez stepped off Moz to make an easy interception.
RESULT: TURNNOVER (Felton: 1)

NO PLAY
Wasn't paying attention (internet hiccup). Mozgov turned it over somehow.
RESULT: TURNOVER (Mozgov: 1)

PF PLAY - 54 SCREEN
Amare uses Moz screen, takes FT line jumper that bounces in.
RESULT: SCORE (Amare 1-2 FG)

FASTBREAK
Felton bounce pass threads needle to Chandler for a dunk. A pass only Stockton/Nash/Kidd could ever make, but whatever.
RESULT: SCORE (Chandler 1-1 FG)

PF PLAY - 34 POST
Amare turnaround on Lopez from 18 feet. Posting up is way too effective but as with the previous play, that's a separate issue.
RESULT: SCORE (Amare 2-3 FG)

NO PLAY
Amare gets a clearout. Couple jabs, makes his move into the paint (where he is surrounded by four Net defenders). Lopez blocks a hook.
RESULT: MISS (Amare 2-4 FG)

PG PLAY - 1 DOUBLE
Play started with mini-break on steal from Felton, but Chandler couldn't do anything so they reset. Play is a double screen that defense recovers on, but Felton crossovers defender to get a step, goes up for a layup and gets fouled.
RESULT: FOUL (Felton 2-2 FT)

SUBSTITUTIONS
Turiaf for Mozgov

KNICKS LINEUP
Felton (69), Chandler (31), Gallinari (32), Stoudemire (63), Turiaf (43)

RESULT: +11 to center position

PG PLAY - 1 DOUBLE
Double screens again but Felton doesn't use them as he beats Harris off dribble as play is setting up. Outlaw rotates which leaves Gallinari wide open for a three that he misses. For a shooter with a high 3pt rating, Gallinari sure misses a lot of open ones.
RESULT: MISS (Gallinari 1-3 FG, 1-2 3PT)

TIMEOUT - 6:06

NO PLAY
Amare inbounds to Turiaf deep in the post, and he goes up for an easy post layup. If any of us tried that, the pass would fly over Turiaf's head, or be poked away by Lopez. You know this to be a fact.
RESULT: SCORE (Turiaf 1-1 FG)

FASTBREAK
Chandler receives outlet after missed shot for a 3-2 break. Gives up to Felton who goes up, gets contested, but dishes to Gallinari who gets fouled, count the basket.
RESULT: SCORE + FOUL (Gallinari 2-4 FG, 1-2 3PT, 0-1 FT)

PF PLAY - 54 SCREEN
Amare uses Turiaf's screen, goes to the basket on Murphy with ease, count the basket and the foul.
RESULT: SCORE + FOUL (Amare 3-5 FG, 1-1 FT)

C PLAY - 25 QUICK POST
Turiaf somehow draws a foul on Lopez. Murphy and Lopez both have 2 fouls now.
RESULT: FOUL (Turiaf 1-1 FG, 2-2 FT)

SUBSTITUTIONS
Felton for Douglas
Mason for Gallinari

KNICKS LINEUP
Douglas (60), Mason (58), Chandler (31), Stoudemire (63), Turiaf (43)
RESULT: -9 to PG position, +27 to SG position, -2 to SF position

SG PLAY - 12 OVER
Mason is supposed to come off double screens but they never really get set, so he doesn't lose his man. Mason catches and pulls up for a contested fadeaway 18 foot jumper that misses. Nevermind. It bounces in after I unpause it.
RESULT: SCORE (Mason 1-1 FG)

SUBSTITUTIONS
Randolph for Stoudemire (2 fouls on Amare)

KNICKS LINEUP
Douglas (60), Mason (58), Chandler (31), Randolph (41), Turiaf (43)
RESULT: -22 to PF position

SG PLAY - 12 OVER
The screens get set this time, but they are terribly places (particularly Randolph's) so Mason takes another contested jumper that really misses this time.
RESULT: MISS (Mason 1-2 FG)

PG PLAY - 23 UP
This play didn't work last game against Jordan Farmar, but Harris is lackadaisical and Douglas drills an open three.
RESULT: SCORE (Douglas 1-1 FG, 1-1 3PT)

C PLAY - 25 QUICK POST
Turiaf posts up for a fade jumper that misses.
RESULT: MISS (Turiaf 1-2 FG, 2-2 FT)

SG PLAY - 12 OVER
Mason actually gets open this time, but the shot misses. Randolph grabs the offensive board and resets.
RESULT: MISS (Mason 1-3 FG)

NO PLAY (OFF REB)
Randolph offensive rebounds and resets to Chandler, who drives in for a missed mid-range shot.
RESULT: MISS (Chandler 1-2 FG)

SG PLAY - 12 OVER
It's deja vu. Mason gets open but misses the shot, Randolph offensive rebounds.
RESULT: MISS (Mason 1-4 FG)

NO PLAY (OFF REB)
Randolph goes up for the shot this time after his offensive board but it's blocked.
RESULT: MISS (Randolph 0-1 FG)

SG PLAY - 12 OVER
You'd think after running the play 5 times in a row the team would figure out how to run it. Randolph nearly commits a 3 second violation setting a no-where screen while waiting for Turiaf to set his (was just standing around). Randolph leaves the paint, and thats when Turiaf starts his screen and the play starts. Incredulously, however, Mason's man plays horrific defense and gets Mason an open look that he drills this time.
RESULT: SCORE (Mason 2-5 FG)

SUBSTITUTIONS
Felton for Douglas
Walker for Mason
Gallinari for Chandler
Mozgov for Randolph (2 fouls on Randolph)

KNICKS LINEUP
Felton (69), Walker (7), Gallinari (32), Turiaf (43), Mozgov (33)
RESULT: +9 PG, -51 SG, +1 SF, +2 PF, -10 C

NO PLAY (end of quarter)
Felton runs up court and hoists a 35 footer
RESULT: MISS (Felton 0-1 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT)

END OF FIRST QUARTER
Amare 7 pts (3-5 FG, 1-1 FT)
Gallo 5 pts (2-4 FG, 1-2 3PT, 0-1 FT)
Mason 4 pts (2-5 FG)
Turiaf 4 pts (1-2 FG, 2-2 FT)
Douglas 3 pts (1-1 FG, 1-1 3PT)
Chandler 2 pts (1-2 FG)
Felton 2 pts (0-1 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT)
Mozgov 1 pts (0-0 FG, 1-2 FT)
Randolph 0 pts (0-1 FG)
Walker 0 pts (0-0 FG)

SECOND QUARTER

SUBSTITUTIONS
Amare for Turiaf

KNICKS LINEUP
Felton (69), Walker (7), Gallinari (32), Stoudemire (63), Mozgov (33)
RESULT: +20 PF

PF PLAY - 14 DIVE
Once again this play is broken up with an interception, this time by a diving Murphy (Amare's man who got caught on the Moz screen). Something tells me this play isn't very effective.
RESULT: TURNOVER (Felton: 2)

PG PLAY - 21 FADE
Felton comes off double screen but doesn't have an open look. Instead he iso's around a bit before pulling up for a three that misses. Mozgov skies for an offensive board.
RESULT: MISS (Felton 0-2 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT)

NO PLAY (OFF REB)
Moz resets to Gallinari on wing. Gallo dribbles to opposite side of the court, and rewards Moz by dishing it to him for a dunk on a basket cut. LOL, I wonder if the game actually counts that as a "Give and Go".
RESULT: SCORE (Mozgov 1-1 FG, 0-1 FT)

PF PLAY - 34 POST
Amare gets doubled and kicks it back out to Gallo. Gallo has a wideopen three but instead opts to put it on the floor and take an 18 foot jumper that goes in (much to my hair's delight).
RESULT: SCORE (Gallinari 3-5 FG, 1-2 3PT, 0-1 FT)

PG PLAY - 41 ROLL
Amare sets a pick and rolls before Felton uses it. Felton drives to basket, dishes out to Walker for an open three, but it misses.
RESULT: MISS (Walker 0-1 FG, 0-1 3PT)

PF PLAY - 24 POST
This play is designed to look like 25 Quick Post, but instead they swing it around to make it a 34 Post. Amare makes his move and gets fouled, count the basket. That's 3 fouls on Murphy btw.
RESULT: SCORE + FOUL (Stoudemire 4-6 FG, 1-2 FT)

PG PLAY - 12 FADE
Walker almost gets the pass to Felton intercepted. Walker recovers and gives it to Felton. Felton drives into the lane for a hop step layup.
RESULT: SCORE (Felton 1-3 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT)

PF PLAY - 24 POST
Amare takes a faceup jumper that misses.
RESULT: MISS (Stoudemire 4-7 FG, 1-2 FT)

PF PLAY - 34 POST
Amare gets doubled, kicks it out to Gallinari who dribbles to mid-court to take a drifting jumper that misses.
RESULT: MISS (Gallinari 3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT, 0-1 FT)

FASTBREAK (Cherry picking, actually)
Mozgov gets a head start on Lopez after a made shot. Felton recognizes and hits Moz for a cross court pass and a dunk.
RESULT: SCORE (Mozgov 2-2 FG, 1-2 FT)

FASTBREAK
Missed shot lets Felton outlet to Gallinari. Defense makes Gallo pick up his dribble, but he forces a shot and gets fouled.
RESULT: FOUL (Gallinari 3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-3 FT)

SUBSTITUTION
Randolph for Stoudemire
Turiaf for Mozgov

KNICKS LINEUP
Felton (69), Chandler (31), Gallinari (32), Randolph (41), Mozgov (43)
RESULT: SG +24, -22 PF, +10 C

PG PLAY - 1 DOUBLE
Play never starts as Felton gives it to Chandler. Chandler's man goes for steal so he has clear path to the basket. Drives in but gets blocked.
RESULT: MISS (Chandler 1-3 FG)

FASTBREAK
Gallinari gets steal, hits breaking Chandler for a clear path dunk.
RESULT: SCORE (Chandler 2-4 FG)

TIMEOUT - 5:50

C PLAY - 25 QUICK POST
Chandler never gives it to Turiaf because Chandler's man is stuck behind posting Turiaf and his defender. Chandler has an open three, but instead fakes for NO REASON (hello computer, there is no defender!) and takes a dribble forward to take a two. Unfortunately, Chandler's defender is able to recover because of the fake and the fact that he stepped forward. The shot is semi-contested and misses.
RESULT: MISS (Chandler 2-5 FG)

C PLAY - 25 QUICK POST
Turiaf posts up on Johan Petro, evading him for an easy shot. I know post defense ratings are low because I haven't adjusted them yet, and that these plays need to be updated so Turiaf isn't posting up everytime a play is run for him, but the fact that he can do this so consistently is really maddening.
RESULT: SCORE (Turiaf 2-3 FG, 2-2 FT)

NO PLAY - CLEAROUT
Felton gets a clearout. Chandler comes over to get a pass, and turns to face the basket. Anthony Morrow DOES NOT MOVE on the turn, he just stands there, so Chandler has a clear path to the basket, and dunks it.
RESULT: SCORE (Chandler 3-6 FG)

FASTBREAK
Chandler gets an outlet, Morrow recovers but Chandler forces it up and draws a foul, count the basket.
RESULT: SCORE + FOUL (Chandler 4-7 FG, 0-1 FT)

SUBSTITUTIONS
Douglas for Felton
Mason for Gallinari

KNICKS LINEUP
Douglas (60), Mason (58), Chandler (31), Randolph (41), Turiaf (43)
RESULT: -9 PG, +27 SG, -1 SF

NO PLAY
Douglas tries to push for a break but nothing comes of it. He dribbles around for a bit and takes a three that Randolph rebounds.
RESULT: MISS (Douglas 1-2 FG, 1-2 3PT)

NO PLAY - OFF REB
Randolph rebounds and resets to Chandler, who pulls up for a 22 foot jumper on the wing.
RESULT: SCORE (Chandler 5-8 FG, 0-1 FT)

TIMEOUT - 3:24

SG PLAY - 23 UP
Mason's defender gets hit by both screens but still recovers. For once, Mason doesn't pull up for the shot. He takes a couple dribbles, does that fake turnaround shot thing, then dishes to Randolph who is open behind him. Randolph dribbles from the left side to the right to take a drifting off balance jumper that misses. Instead of just pulling up for the open one that he had in the first place. This jumper crap is pretty annoying. Turiaf grabs the offensive board.
RESULT: MISS (Randolph 0-2 FG)

NO PLAY - OFF REB
Morrow pokes through Turiaf's leg to knock the ball away. HIGH FIVE FOR NON-SHOOTING FOULS!
RESULT: TURNOVER (Turiaf: 1)

SG PLAY - 23 UP
Again Mason doesn't take the shot off the catch, but instead takes a couple dribbles for a fade that misses.
RESULT: MISS (Mason 2-6 FG)

SG PLAY - 23 UP
Mason gets an open look and misses.
RESULT: MISS (Mason 2-7 FG)

SG PLAY - 23 UP
Mason gets an open look and hits it.
RESULT: SCORE (Mason 3-8 FG)

SG PLAY - 23 UP
Mason has no shot, dribbles it around, gives it up to open Douglas on wing (Harris was reaching for steal). Douglas has an open three, but instead dribbles closer. He actually dribbles past his defender and gets an open leaner from about 8 feet, but it misses.
RESULT: MISS (Douglas 1-3 FG, 1-2 3PT)

NO PLAY (Final play of qtr)
Douglas dribbles around and takes a three with 4 seconds left on the clock.
RESULT: MISS (Douglas 1-4 FG, 1-3 3PT)

END OF 2ND QUARTER
Chandler 10 pts, 19 mins (5-8 FG, 0-1 FT)
Stoudemire 9 pts, 14 mins (4-7 FG, 1-2 FT)
Gallinari 8 pts, 17 mins (3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-3 FT)
Mason 6 pts, 8 mins (3-8 FG)
Turiaf 6 pts, 14 mins (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT)
Mozgov 5 pts, 11 mins (2-2 FG, 1-2 FT)
Felton 4 pts, 17 mins (1-3 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT)
Douglas 3 pts, 8 mins (1-4 FG, 1-3 3PT)
Walker 0 pts, 6 mins (0-1 FG, 0-1 3PT)
Randolph 0 pts, 11 mins (0-2 FG)

Okay, I'm done tracking play by play. Let's talk about the results and let the CPU run in the background.

IS AMARE FIXED?
Looks like it. Amare finally took a reasonable amount of shots, and even had the majority of the plays called for him. I'd still like to see a couple more isolations and drives, so we might need to keep upping the team's Attack Basket tendency.

WHY IS ROGER MASON A GO-TO-GUY?
It's not so much that Mason getting all these plays is a bad thing. The problem is all those plays are the exact same thing - a screen play. Mason ran pick and rolls in San Antonio, and that needs to be incorporated into his playbook. Of course, if Mason sees a decrease in P/R action in NY, that would be cause for lowering his Touches to Chandler/Gallinari levels. Which should fix that problem.

WHY ARE SO MANY JUMPERS MISSING?
This is technically not a problem. I'm okay with missed jumpers. The problem is the CPU is passing up open shots to take lower-quality momentum shots, solely because the tendencies are telling them to. This is just bad basketball that is being forced upon us. It's another area that will have to be tested with, though the issue isn't nearly as pressing as this touches issue.

WHY ARE SO MANY POST SHOTS GOING IN?
Basically, post defense in this game is near useless. The defense is at the mercy of the offense, and there are few counters. It certainly doesn't help that most players have underrated post defense.

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY AND ONES?
I'm guessing that "Hard Foul" tendency needs to be raised for more players. Players are getting contact and never even have to make an adjustment to their shots. It would also be cool if the CPU would actually commit a reach in foul, over the back, etc, which they have yet to do in any of my sims. Every foul has been a shooting foul (or an intentional foul at the end of the 4th).

END OF GAME BOX (pts-reb-ast-stl-blk-to-pf-mins)
Mozgov: 5-6-0-0-2-1-3-26 (2-4 FG, 1-2 FT)
Stoudemire: 26-11-4-1-0-1-2-35 (10-21 FG, 6-9 FT)
Gallinari: 13-1-2-2-0-2-0-34 (5-11 FG, 2-4 3PT, 1-3 FT)

Douglas: 11-0-4-0-0-0-0-13 (4-8 FG, 2-4 3PT, 1-1 FT)
Turiaf: 6-4-0-0-2-1-1-17 (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT)
Mason: 6-2-1-0-0-0-0-17 (3-10 FG, 0-1 3PT)
Walker: 3-2-0-0-0-1-1-13 (1-3 FG, 1-2 3PT)

TEAM STATS
104 pts
40-85 FG (47%)
6-14 3PT (42%)
18-26 FT (69%)

Excellent. All that has to be done now is fix playbooks and these results are golden.
