Certainly not out of the goodness of your heart...3. Certainly not out of the goodness of your heart, for the love of the game, both virtual and real. Im not saying to do it for every play set but the ones that require context. A player being wide open and hitting a shot is self explanatory, but when you start delving into quantifying the defensive ability of a player, knowing the counterparts production isnt enough. You need to know WHO the counterpart was and the expected success rate.

I do take this into account, but it takes a great deal of time to jot all this information down. I actually did this on 2K forum comparing Kobe and Artest's Iso defense in the playoffs.

Durant
vs Artest: 6-23 FG, 3 TO, 2 fouls
vs Kobe: 2-2 FG, 2 TO

Durant only scored 30% of time vs Artest compared to 50% vs Kobe (in a much smaller sample).

Synergy shows that Artest always guards the tougher perimeter player, which means his defensive stats (0.66 PPP on Isos, good for 19th) are to be taken much more seriously than Kobe's 0.74 PPP or whatever it is (something like 75th IIRC). Kobe did a pedestrian job against Russell Westbrook (2-5 FG, 1 foul) and Grant Hill (3-7 FG, 1 And1). He wasn't getting destroyed by Rondo/WB like Fisher, but that doesn't mean he's a lockdown defensive player like Artest, Battier, etc.

Holding Jason Collins scoreless in post up situations isnt as impressive as holding Duncan down.

I just thought this was funny in the sense that Jason Collins is one of the few centers in the NBA who attempted 0 post-ups last year. It's a valid point, and one that I took into consideration while viewing the data.

Yet synergy will simply show you 2 players who defended at an equally impressive rate.

Synergy allows us to look at the individual play data (i.e. who the player was matched up with).

For example PER and WinShares are 2 of the most known metrics that attempt to account for those aforementioned aspects. One is a usage based statistic that can overrate chuckers, the other focuses on guys who maximize their possessions. The 2 offer a great contrast in styles that paint a decent picture of a players contributions.

I wouldn't even bother with PER/WS, as it's clear just from USG% who the players are that force the action and those who don't. Which is not to say I use Usage to determine anything other than "Shot Tendency".

Player Tendencies (how the CPU controls the players, completely unrelated to ratings) is the main thing that Synergy allowed me to adjust - the majority of my ratings were done well before I had Synergy data access. I have the CPU playing smarter than 2K does, which is just another advantage to my rosters over theirs (since it's been long-since established that their ratings are crap year after year).Rashidihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15415749685735306421noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4919554729805931143.post-79710076401031889552010-09-23T13:29:50.263-04:002010-09-23T13:29:50.263-04:001.

Holding Jason Collins scoreless in post up situations isnt as impressive as holding Duncan down. Yet synergy will simply show you 2 players who defended at an equally impressive rate. This is just one of the examples. It doesnt always make a big difference but if your trying to set yourself apart, wouldnt such accuracy be an upgrade nonetheless?

5. Well then could you direct me to 2k's system because I have no idea how they value shot creation either.

What I mean when I ask for your methodology is, Im basically asking you how do you account for the subjective nature of statistics. Where do you draw the line between efficiency and usage?

For example PER and WinShares are 2 of the most known metrics that attempt to account for those aforementioned aspects. One is a usage based statistic that can overrate chuckers, the other focuses on guys who maximize their possessions. The 2 offer a great contrast in styles that paint a decent picture of a players contributions.

These are the 2 main issues pertaining to the APBR movement, and since you pride yourself on what that movement is all about, its only logical that I question what is you know about the field. Im not an expert by any stretch, but I have been a part of the basketball blogosphere for the better half of this decade. Ive spent years debating the sport with some of the best minds out there, the fact that Ive never seen or heard of you outside this community doesnt inspire faith. The average starting SG has 74 Close, 76 Med, and 67 Shoot Off Dribble so Kobe is clearly a big step above the rest.

2. I'm curious as to how someone can question my credibility without knowing the purpose of the Shoot Off Dribble and Shoot In Traffic ratings. I'm basing it on performance in games when Oden has played.

Noah is a fantastic player: one of my favourites in the league in fact (be fan of the scrappy never say die players). However, Oden when healthy is one of the best big men in the L.

He's played more than 10-15 games. Yes, he missed a season and of a possible 164 only played 82 (or exactly a season) but in those games he is a defensive force rarely seen and does his job on the offensive end.

Not saying that Noah won't be the better player at the end of the day, because Oden really could spend the rest of his career going 1-3 in terms of games but right now I'd trade Noah for Oden based both on performance and potential.Shelbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4919554729805931143.post-61916291236254739582010-09-21T18:04:19.802-04:002010-09-21T18:04:19.802-04:00oden better then noah?

When Oden plays he's...Oden is better than Noah. When Oden plays he's probably the second/third best Center in the league. His problem is injuries, not talent.

And Gasol is a superstar level player. The fact his PPG average has dropped so little and his RPG average actually raised since he went from being the number one guy on his team to playing number two to Kobe on the talent heavy Lakers should be enough proof.Shelbnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4919554729805931143.post-63617955017650739602010-09-21T06:01:03.311-04:002010-09-21T06:01:03.311-04:00Well you might not agree, and it's definitely ...Well you might not agree, and it's definitely up for debate.
