Finally, some results to hang my hat on

2K revised their touch tendencies so I implemented them, made some tweaks, and ran a test to see how they'd hold up. The results, as usual, were far from perfect, but ultimately were very promising.

CELTICS (84 Overall) vs KNICKS (76 Overall)

GAME SETTINGS
Difficulty: All-Star
Quarters: 12 Minutes
Game Speed: Normal

SLIDER CHANGES
20 Dunk In Traffic success
15 Contact Shot success
55 Driving Contact Frequency
55 Inside Contact Frequency

KNICKS
115 Points
38-80 FG (47%)
10-30 3PT (33%)
29-33 FT (87%)
23 Assists
13 Turnovers
17 Fouls
52 Rebounds (7 Off)
3 Steals
3 Blocks
38 Paint Points
45 Bench Points
10 Second Chance Points
2 Fast Break Points (as usual, the game has no idea what constitutes a fast break)

CELTICS
111 Points
39-96 FG (40%)
10-25 3PT (40%)
23-29 FT (79%)
25 Assists
3 Turnovers
18 Fouls
43 Rebounds (8 Off)
11 Steals
18 Paint Points
11 Bench Points
10 Second Chance Points
2 Fast Break Points

I am pleased with the decreased points in the paint for both teams. Part of this was due to the teams going to the FT line more often when they get the ball inside, which is actually realistic. However, it is really annoying that the game ONLY calls shooting fouls, with the occasional loose ball foul. Never a reach, never a charge, just blocking/shooting fouls. However, I'm reluctant to adjust this because a decrease in FTA would lead to an increase in FGA. It's just something to note for the moment.

KNICKS BOX: Pts-Reb-Ast-Stl-Blk-TO-Fls-Mins (FG, 3PT, FT)
T.Mozgov: 0-6-0-0-0-0-1-16 (0-0 FG, 0-0 3PT, 0-0 FT)
A.Stoudemire: 35-13-3-0-1-2-3-37 (13-21 FG, 0-1 3PT, 9-9 FT)
D.Gallinari: 9-7-0-0-0-1-1-24 (3-11 FG, 2-6 3PT, 1-2 FT)
L.Fields: 10-6-2-1-0-0-3-33 (2-10 FG, 2-10 3PT, 4-4 FT)
R.Felton: 16-0-11-1-0-4-1-32 (5-10 FG, 0-1 3PT, 6-6 FT)
BENCH
W.Chandler: 28-7-0-0-1-0-3-35 (11-18 FG, 6-10 3PT, 0-0 FT)
Douglas: 7-1-4-1-0-3-0-20 (1-1 FG, 0-0 3PT, 5-6 FT)
Turiaf: 6-10-0-0-1-2-2-25 (2-3 FG, 0-0 3PT, 2-4 FT)
Walker: 0-1-1-0-0-1-2-14 (0-3 FG, 0-1 3PT, 0-0 FT)
Mason: 4-1-2-0-0-0-1-9 (1-3 FG, 0-1 3PT, 2-2 FT)

Final Knick Lineup: Felton, Douglas, Fields, Chandler, Stoudemire

Mozgov not involved at all. I noticed his close tendency is low so I'll boost that. In 16 minutes, he should have at least taken a shot, even if he's playing next to Amare.

Amare had 23 points in the first half (12 FGA, 7 FTA) in 1st half, but only 12 points in the second half (9 FGA, 2 FTA) because the Celtics started doubling him.

Fields took all his shots from deep. I noticed his Inside/Close tendency is low so hopefully a boost will balance his shooting spread. Half his shots IRL are threes, but 10 of 10 is a bit much.

Felton had a solid game. Just noticed his 3pt tend is only 21, and should probably be higher now that he's a Knick instead of a Bobcat. Relatively minor tweak.

Chandler caught fire in the 4th quarter and went ballistic. He only has a 69 3pt rating. That's the power of "fire". For those who weren't aware, this is exactly what Chandler has been doing through the first three games, ridiculous 3pt shooting not withstanding.

CELTICS BOX: Pts-Reb-Ast-Stl-Blk-TO-Fls-Mins (FG, 3PT, FT)
S.O'Neal: 7-8-0-3-0-0-2-24 (2-6 FG, 0-0 3PT, 3-3 FT)
K.Garnett: 26-12-1-3-0-0-3-35 (12-20 FG, 0-0 3PT, 2-5 FT)
P.Pierce: 26-1-3-2-0-1-1-33 (11-25 FG, 2-6 3PT, 2-2 FT)
R.Allen: 35-4-5-0-0-0-2-37 (9-20 FG, 7-14 3PT, 10-10 FT)
R.Rondo: 6-2-9-1-0-0-6-43 (2-8 FG, 0-2 3PT, 2-2 FT)
BENCH
G.Davis: 4-9-2-1-0-1-0-25 (1-4 FG, 0-0 3PT, 2-3 FT)
M.Daniels: 2-0-1-1-0-0-1-16 (0-4 FG, 0-0 3PT, 2-4 FT)
N.Robinson: 0-0-1-0-0-1-0-13 (0-4 FG, 0-2 3PT, 0-0 FT)
J.O'Neal: 2-6-3-0-0-0-3-15 (1-1 FG, 0-0 3PT, 0-0 FT)
V.Wafer: 3-1-0-0-0-0-0-6 (1-4 FG, 1-1 3PT, 0-0 FT)

Final Celtic Lineup: Robinson, Allen, Pierce, Garnett, Davis

The big three did the majority of the Celtics damage. I'm not with it, because this team is too deep for that. KG/Pierce/Allen should not be combining for 65 FGA anymore, not with this many weapons. A higher Touch tendency for Shaq seems to be in order. Shaq, btw, had 3 steals, which is likewise not cool.

Rondo was not aggressive at all, but I have a feeling this has to do with the plays being run. He fouled out at the end due to intentional fouls, not because of overaggressive defense. Rondo hasn't been much of a scorer through the first 3 games, and has been piling up assists like nobodies business, but on this night he only had 9 in 43 minutes despite big nights for the big three.

GAMETRACK
I would have loved to post the GT data, however I accidentally hit re-match instead of Gametrack.

Off the top of my head, Amare had 4 dunks. Two were alley-oops, another from terrible P/R defense, and an uncontested standing dunk underneath. There was also a dunk that Shaq "blocked" except the ball clipped through his hand and Amare was rewarded with a foul call.

Pierce had something like 5 or 6 post ups from the mid-post. Getting those shots to Shaq would have been ideal.

Finally, 2K really needs to fix their defensive A.I. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON why players should be mixing up assignments coming up the floor AFTER A MADE BASKET. Every single time this happens it's an automatic basket, because the PGs can't stop the Cs in the post, and the Cs can't stop the PGs off the dribble.

I don't have an ETA for my next roster update yet, but it should be soon - probably when I finish "Re-TOUCHing" all the teams (about 40% done).

Josh McRoberts: Another slap in the face from 2K Sports

Josh McRoberts is Indiana's starting power forward. That alone is fairly sound logic that he is a decent player and should have a higher rating than, oh, I don't know, Malik Allen, Derrick Caracter, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Eduardo Najera, TAYLOR GRIFFIN (I could go on and on, since McRoberts is ranked 96th among PF by 2K Sports)...

But then, this is 2K Sports. Their logic dictates that Melvin Ely should be in the free agent pool instead of Coby Karl. Two roster updates into the regular season, mind you.

Here's the list of McRoberts' rating boosts from 2K's latest update.

56 Overall (+2)
40 OffAwr (+10)
48 DefAwr (+5)

This is apparently all they could find wrong with him. Isn't that just grand?

McRoberts went 8-23 from 3pt range last season, and was 1-2 last night. 2K saw nothing wrong with his 3pt rating, a paltry 27.

McRoberts grabbed 6 rebounds in only 24 minutes yesterday. He had 18.2 defensive rebounding percentage last year, and is at 19.3 for his career. Yet this is only grounds for a 49 in the world of the 2K Insider, while Dirk and his 20.2 run around with an 86 rating.

Speaking of those 24 minutes, McRoberts only has 70 stamina despite being an athletic 23 year old. But then, with 45 speed and 48 quickness, he isn't exactly athletic.

Clearly, it's McRoberts' basketball IQ that is allowing him to get by - after all, those are the only ratings 2K bothered to upgrade (ones that "coincidentally" have the most significant effect on overall rating). That's why McRoberts (40 Off, 48 Def), a player that earned a starting role in the NBA, is on par with Sean Marks (40/48), a career 3rd stringer that is out of the NBA. TAYLOR GRIFFIN, a player whose career lasted 32 minutes (entirely due to his last name) has superior basketball intellect (41/65) that McRoberts can only dream of achieving. Pops Mensah-Bonsu, a career 10-day contract player who scrounged up 474 minutes across 4 seasons (compared to the 524 McRoberts played LAST season), apparently gained quite a bit of knowledge during his travels (58/49) because he too.

It is certainly not worth noting that McRoberts scored 11 points in his 24 minutes. I would never hold it against Pops that never broke 7 across his 20 games last season. Wait a second. What gives? I have a brain? Really? You don't say!

Here are MY ratings for McRoberts. I'm no genius. Just a guy with common sense and a work ethic strong enough that I can look at more than two ratings at a time and say "HMMM, SOMETHING MIGHT BE WRONG HERE".

Josh McRoberts
Overall 66 (up from 56) (54)
Inside 72 (up from 67)
Close 62 (down from 67)
Medium 62

BallDef 70 (up from 40)
OffReb 71 (up from 58)
DefReb 71 (up from 49)
OffPost 61
DefPost 62 (up from 57)
OffAwr 60 (up from 40) (30)
DefAwr 53 (up from 48) (43)
OffClutch 25
DefClutch 25
Consistency 50 (down from 60)
Stamina 77 (up from 70)

Quickness 65 (up from 48)
Strength 60
Vertical 63
Hustle 73
Durability 70
Potential 69 (up from 63)
Emotion 60 (up from 25)

McRoberts would rank 50th among PFs in 2K's rosters if he had those ratings, but then, he might actually be worth using. We don't want kids picking the Pacers over the Heat, Lakers, and Celtics now, do we?

The Real NBA 2K11 - Opening Night

FILE NAME: The Real NBA 2K11 - Opening Night!
SYSTEM: Xbox360
GAMERTAG: Real 2K Insider

This is an in-progress rebuild of my previous roster (re-started because 2K "patched" gameplay features into their previous roster).

Most stars have been fully edited (ratings & tendencies), as well as some entire teams. Off the top of my head the completed teams are the Sixers, Bobcats, Celtics, Heat, Knicks, and Lakers. The players on those teams also have 100% accurate accessories, contracts, and layup/dunk signature edits.

Coach profiles were adjusted across the league.

Rotations and player roles are 100% accurate in conjunction with my previous post.

Ratings are still nowhere near where they were in the previous update where I had 300+ players edited. The next update should be much more comprehensive.

Finally, I do not know the ETA on a PS3 roster file. I sent the data over to my PS3 collaborator and he has the ok to post when the data is implemented. The PS3 file should be ahead of where I'm at as he had more time to edit this week than I did. (I do not know his PSN tag it will be uploaded under, forgot to ask).

Enjoy the rosters. They are far from a finished product, so please bring to my attention anything that needs to be addressed.

NBA 2K11 opening night rotations & player roles

Here are the rotations and player roles that will be found in my roster, "The Real NBA 2K11". The roster will be uploaded shortly for both 360 and PS3.

Rotation information will change rapidly (as in, daily), but player roles should be mostly set in stone, give or take a few starting lineup changes.

The Real NBA 2K11

Real 2K Insider has uploaded an NBA 2K11 roster file to 2K Share for 360! Search for it by...

FILE NAME: The Real NBA 2K11
GAMERTAG: Real 2K Insider

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR

Hello 2K community! Welcome to the Real 2K Insider blog!

Last season I spent a great deal of time adjusting my renowned ratings to 2K's new scale. This summer I also signed up for Synergy Sports Technology (the service NBA Live/Elite was using for their tendency data), which helped me develop the best player tendencies the 2K community has ever seen.

With the grunt work out of the way, I'm not about to settle for the status quo. This season, the goal is to expand upon my work even further to bring you the most comprehensive virtual NBA experience to date.

2K Sports promised you this. However, with tendencies out of the box that destroy the realism they claim to provide, they have failed. Unless of course, Andrea Bargnani taking 30 shots per game is realistic to you (in which case you might be in the wrong place).

My current plan is to have all the player re-rated by the end of the month (actually, by the end of next week). That way any changes throughout the course of the season should be relatively minor. After that, I will begin re-working all the player tendencies - there are quite a few that are just ruining the current gameplay (I'm looking at you, hyped up "Touches" tendency).

Perhaps most importantly, after great demand I will (finally) be uploading these rosters to PS3! I do not have a time table yet, but there should definitely be a roster up by the beginning of the NBA season.

This is going to be an exciting season, and I have big things planned for not only the roster, but how the Real 2K Insider presents it's content as well.
