2010 ANALYSIS
I was more critical of Nowitzki than most in 2010. His rebounding has declined quite a bit over the last few years, and he still doesn't really make his teammates better. Dwyane Wade for example, makes all the big plays on offense, but ALSO makes all the big plays on defense for his team AND is the only player on his team creating looks for all of his teammates. Dirk just doesn't have that type of hold over a game. Sure, he might have some great individual scoring performances, but it takes more than that to win a championship, and that's ultimately why Dirk's list of embarrssing playoff defeats and collapses continues to grow. Great players can contribute to their team in other ways besides scoring. The sooner the Mavs realize Dirk will never be able to win by himself, the better off they'll be.

FUTURE
Dirk recently grumbled about possibly opting out, but we all know that ain't happening. The Mavs will sign him to extension before he ever hits free agency. They should be careful not to overpay too much though, as his defense, rebounding, and driving game will only continue to decline with age.

2010 ANALYSIS
Kidd had a solid year across the board, even showing us that last season's 3pt numbers with Dallas were no fluke. Kidd even made the all-star team this season, although that had more to do with the game being in Dallas than him being a better player than Carlos Boozer (he certainly wasn't, but was at least more deserving of the selection than Chris Kaman).

FUTURE
Kidd has two more seasons on his contract. The team could go in a different direction via trade, but I expect Kidd to be a member of the Mavs next season.

2010 ANALYSIS
Butler had a very subpar season across the board. It was initially thought his struggles related to a lesser role in Flip Saunder's PG oriented offense in Washington, but then he went on to struggle in Dallas as well. Dallas needs him to return to form if they're going to have any hopes of overcoming this season's disappointing finish.

FUTURE
There were rumblings that the Mavericks would use Butler as trade bait in their quest to pair Dirk with a top 2010 free agent. One interesting possibility I'll throw out there - a sign/trade for Shaq if LeBron James leaves Cleveland.

2010 ANALYSIS
Terry had a solid season, but it was actually his worst as a Maverick. His shooting numbers dropped badly, from .500 FG% in his first year as a Mav to .463 last season when he was the 2009 Sixth Man of the Year, to .438 this season where he really wasn't in the discussion. His defense also slipped a bit.

FUTURE
Terry should continue to be productive for the duration of his contract, but like the rest of Dallas' core, he's fighting Father Time.

2010 ANALYSIS
I want to know what happened to Marion's shot. He is now a mere 21-105 (.200) from 3pt range in two and a half seasons since leaving Phoenix, and was only 3-19 (.158) this season. Marion's continued decline from distance has turned him into strictly a putback/fastreak guy and defensive role player.

FUTURE
Marion had the worst season of his career at 31 years of age, kind of expected for a player so reliant on his athleticism. Good thing he's signed for four more years and 32 million, right?

Beaubois had a "Barbosian" effect when he took the court in Dallas. His speed was an excellent asset that was ultimately underutilized on a team lacking athleticism.

FUTURE
Beaubois might be the starting SG next season if Butler gets moved. At the very least, he should take more minutes from Barea and the aging Kidd.

2010 ANALYSIS
Haywood's defensive impact was finally noticed by the fans and league, as Washington was often lost without him on the court. Because of this, big things were expected out of the Mavs when they picked up Haywood, but instead he mostly played a reserve role behind Dampier.

FUTURE
Haywood is a 2010 free agent, but will probably be re-upping with the Mavs, who can offer him the most money. Miami and Cleveland are other possibilities if the teams opt not to re-sign their respective O'Neals.

2010 ANALYSIS
The oft-underrated Dampier continued to do what he does best - covering Dirk's behind on the boards and defense while getting little credit for the job he does.

FUTURE
Dampier's 2011 contract is fully unguaranteed, which gives the Mavs the option of voiding Damp's contract and re-signing him to a far cheaper rate, or trading him to a team looking to avoid the luxury tax, and re-signing him after that team void his contract. Damp will be 35 years old next season, and a move to the bench will probably be good for him.

2010 ANALYSIS
Barea continued to be a reasonable backup, although I'm still unsure of why the team needs an offensive minded backup PG when they already have Jason Terry.

FUTURE
Dallas holds a team option for Barea's 2011 services that they will likely exercise given how cheap it is. They could trade him however, to give a bigger role to the incumbant Rodrigue Beaubois.

Thomas played well as Dirk's backup early in the year, but then left the team to care for his ill wife.

FUTURE
I think Thomas is done in the NBA simply because he'll be looking out for his family's health. I remember his sister and cousin suddenly died when he was a member of the Knicks, and it affected his play on the court all season long. He surely takes his wife's condition seriously. Best wishes to Tim and his family.

2010 ANALYSIS
Najera hasn't been an effective player since signing his 4-year contract with New Jersey. He took Tim Thomas and Kris Humphries' place in Dallas, but was largely a downgrade from either of those two players.

FUTURE
Najera's last two seasons are not guaranteed, and that's a very good thing for the Mavericks. Najera shouldn't be making anything more than the veteran's minimum at this point (if he's even going to hold a roster spot in the NBA).

2010 ANALYSIS
Carroll was a decent player with a nice shooting touch in Charlotte but has been completely buried in Dallas, earning 4.7 million dollars to play a grand total of 121 minutes this season.

FUTURE
Carroll has one of the NBA's worst contracts, which makes his job startlingly secure.

2010 ANALYSIS
Bosh saved the best season of his career for his contract year. Statistically, he is the #1 PF in the entire league. Much of that was due to his high usage rate, however, and his production will dip if he decides to play next to LeBron, Wade, or another star next season.

FUTURE
Bosh is widely considered the 3rd best free agent of the 2010 class and possibly a max level player. He is unlikely to re-sign with the Raptors given their inability to put a winning team around him, though I have a feeling the team will be able to get something for him in a sign and trade. Potential destinations: Atlanta, Dallas, LA Clippers, LA Lakers, Memphis, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, and Phoenix.

2010 ANALYSIS
Jack fit in well in Toronto, improving his scoring an PG skills during a down year for Jose Calderon. Jack even managed to crack the starting lineup for a period of time, though he is probably best suited for a reserve role.

FUTURE
Jack is signed for the next 3 years to a reasonable contract. He could become a starter if the team trades Calderon, but as already stated, he isn't a high-end option and is best suited to a 6th/7th man role.

2010 ANALYSIS
I thought the massive contract Turkoglu signed last year was far too much for a player who really only had two good seasons out of his entire career, and he didn't exactly prove me wrong. Turkoglu was heavily criticized this season, particularly when news broke that he was out partying the same night he called out sick. His play was down across the board and he complained about not getting enough touches despite not doing much with them. IMO, the Raptors decided they wanted to be the worst defensive team in the league the moment they signed him to replace Shawn Marion.

FUTURE
Turkoglu is signed for four more years in Toronto, for better or worse. I do think he'll rebound somewhat next season, but that'll be mostly due to him getting more touches on a Bosh-less team.

2010 ANALYSIS
I had a feeling Calderon wouldn't fit in very well with Turkoglu and I wasn't mistaken. Calderon had a down year due to injuries, chemistry, and a decline in his own play. His defense was absolutely atrocious all year long and he is the main reason the Raptors are abominably bad on that end.

FUTURE
The player who once looked like the next Steve Nash will need to focus on not becoming the next Sarunas Jasikevikius. He is signed for three more seasons, but the Raptors may decide to pull the plug once Bosh is gone.

2010 ANALYSIS
I'll leave this one short and to the point: If Eddy Curry could shoot threes, he'd be Andrea Bargnani.

FUTURE
It's worth noting that Bargnani rates 72 overall at PF - it will likely (read: hopefully) be the position he mans next season. His rebounding just will not work at center, and he doesn't have anywhere close to the defensive ability required to anchor a defense.

2010 ANALYSIS
Johnson continued to attack the basket on both ends, and was the Raptors top defensive player throughout the year. While his quickness is a blessing, he'll need to bulk up at some point going forward if he's going to hang with NBA regulars on a consistent basis.

FUTURE
I think Amir will re-sign if Bosh leaves, as minutes will certainly be available, but his foul rate is much too high for him to be anything more than a high-energy sixth man. He's still only 23 years old, with plenty of room to grow. If he ends up starting next to Bargnani next season, it's not the absolute worst case scenario, but it will be disappointing.

Wright was Toronto's top perimeter defender, but that's not exactly saying much. He's only slightly better than average, and isn't much of an offensive player. Still, he has a place in this league as a 9th/10th man.

Wright probably won't be re-signed by the team, as they can give his minutes to DeRozan next season.

2010 ANALYSIS
Banks was suprisingly efficient in the time he got this season, rebounding from a subpar 2009 that put him in the limited bench role he's in today (only 22 games and 244 minutes!). Given the sorry state of the Raptors defense, it's tough to believe he didn't get more PT, even at SG where he'd probably be a better option than Marco Belinelli.

FUTURE
Banks still has one more year left on the ridiculous contract Bryan Colangelo (then of the Phoenix Suns) gave him. Banks is likely looking at Europe after that, because he's too good to be a 3rd string and his defense isn't valued enough by NBA teams (despite the fact that Lindsey Hunter played in this league until he was freakin 40).

Weems went from nobody to starting SG on a near-playoff team. We knew he was an athlete, but we didn't know he could actually score with reasonable efficiency (despite the utter lack of three point range).

As good as Weems showed us he was, one would hope the organization still views him as a backup. I would think the offseason was a disappointment if he's starting on opening night next season.

2010 ANALYSIS
Evans missed most of the season with injury, and when healthy showed he was the same player he's always been - one of the best rebounders of the last 25 years.

FUTURE
As with most of the Raptors, Evans will see a bigger role next season with Bosh out of the way.

2010 ANALYSIS
Nesterovic had to be one of the worst uses of a Bi-Annual Exception ever. Teams can only use the BAE every two years, and the Raps opted to use it on a player they gave a grand total of 413 minutes to all season. Nesterovic looked slower on defense than he did in his previous Toronto stint, but it's still tough to believe they went with Bargnani at center as frequently as they did.

FUTURE
I would re-sign Nesterovic simply because I expect Bargnani to be the starting PF next season and Toronto will need the depth. If not, there will be other teams willing to give him a bench role.

2010 ANALYSIS
DeRozan's rookie season was mostly a struggle. He handle and jumpshot aren't good enough to create his own offense, and at 20 years old, his understanding of defense is not high. He was handed a starting role for most of the year but lost it to his friend Weems late in the year.

FUTURE
D.D. projects as a starter down the line, but he has a lot to learn until that time comes. A bench role next season will be good for him.

Belinelli was expected to have a prominent role in Toronto but once again disappointed for all the same reasons he did in Golden State - erratic shooting and poor defense.

FUTURE
If you can't beat out Antoine Wright, Demar DeRozan, or Sonny Weems for minutes, your long term future isn't the NBA. Belinelli will spend one more season in Toronto and if he doesn't show any improvement it's back to Europe for him.

2010 ANALYSIS
O'Bryant has yet to get much of a chance to play in the NBA, which is a shame, because I don't think he's much worse than most other backups. He's athletic for his size, can block a shot, a decent mid-range shot, and a fair post repetoire (for a backup). His skillset isn't that far off from Dan Gadzuric, who earned himself a sizable contract with his play on the court.

FUTURE
Honestly it's not looking good for POB. While he'll only be 24 next year, it's unknown if any team still sees any potential in him. He's looking at training camp gigs, the D-League, or possibly Europe.

2010 ANALYSIS
Dorsey was signed at the tail end of the season after Bosh got hurt, but he never got into a game with the Raptors. In limited minutes with the Rockets and Kings, Dorsey showed he could rebound the ball at this level but not much else.

FUTURE
Dorsey will go to summer league and training camp with the Raptors, who hope that he can fill a rebounding/defense role on the team next season. They'll certainly need it after this year's mess in those areas. Any progress he makes would allow the team to move Evans in a trade this summer.

New York Knicks NBA 2K10 Ratings (Final)

NEW YORK KNICKS
73 Offense, 67 Defense, 70 Overall

2009-2010 SUMMARY

ORTG: 107.6 (17th)
DRTG: 111.6 (27th)

New York started the season 1-9 but went 9-6 in the month of December to give the fans some hope. Unfortunately, their success proved unsustainable, and the Knicks waved the white flag at the trade deadline when they shipped out Jared Jeffries, Larry Hughes, and lottery pick Jordan Hill in exchange for the massive expiring contract of Tracy McGrady. New York finished the year 10-18 after the trade, as the defense completely fell apart without Jeffries.

All-Star selections: 1 (2010)

2010 SUMMARY
Lee was the Knicks' first all-star selection of the last 10 years, the first Knick since Patrick Ewing to average 20/10, recorded the franchise's first triple double in nearly a decade, and lead all NBA centers in assists. He made the jump from glorified role player to legit all-star, and stylistically is basically an unselfish version of Zach Randolph (who was also an all-star this year... Randolph's better with his back to the basket, but Lee has the much better faceup/driving game). Ultimately, Lee is overmatched defensively at center, and will surely be back to his natural PF one way or the other in 2011.

FUTURE
Lee is a 2010 free agent, should command at least 10 million per year on his new deal, and may have played his last game with the Knicks, as they have made it clear they prefer Chris Bosh & Amare Stoudemire. I'm optimistic that Lee will eventually re-sign (as I don't think the Knicks have much of a shot at Bosh/Amare... or LeBron/Wade for that matter), but if another team (say, the LA Clippers, or the soon to be Brooklyn Nets) makes him an offer he can't refuse, he could walk and leave the Knicks with nothing.

Former Teams: Pacers (354), Hawks (142), Pacers (36), Warriors (123)
Current Team: Knicks (140)

2010 ANALYSIS
Harrington was just as good in 2010 as he was in 2009, scoring a career high 20.9 ppg. His shot wasn't there early in the year, but Al made up for it by getting to the line 5.2 times per game, which was also a career high. His defense is also underappreciated, as he is one of the league's leaders in charges drawn. That said, his rebounding is weak and he doesn't make his teammates better on the offensive end. He's at his best as a sixth man, where his skillset plays out best.

FUTURE
Harrington is a 2010 free agent, and is unlikely to be re-signed by the Knicks as he cuts into Gallinari's shots and development. Without Al and David Lee, there will be a lot of shots to go around for whomever their replacements are. He could join a team like the Bulls who are desperate for 3pt shooting and post scoring.

2010 ANALYSIS
Chandler is a versatile defender who has started at SG, SF, and PF over the last two seasons. He's continued to improve on both ends, and is at his best when he is driving to the basket rather than settling for his average jumper.

FUTURE
Chandler appears to be locked into the starting SG role for the Knicks, though he could be moved in a trade if they can find a better option. He'll be a free agent in 2011, and the Knicks could be reluctant to give him a contract extension this summer.

2010 ANALYSIS
Played surprisingly well for a 29th pick, and basically took Nate Robinson's role on the team when Nate was traded. Douglas is even worse at running point than Robinson, but is at least much more promising as a defender.

FUTURE
Should be the Knicks' backup PG for the next couple years, pending any trades. He's old for a prospect, which limits his upside.

2010 ANALYSIS
Gallinari overcame the back injury he suffered in his rookie season and showed no ill-effects in 2010. He was 2nd in the NBA in threes made, and his offensive game showed signs of life once Al Harrington went down with injury.

FUTURE
We're looking at either the next Hedo Turkoglu or Peja Stojakovic. At only 21 years old, Gallo is well ahead of the curve, and looks like a good bet to easily eclipse Turkoglu (who wasn't any good until joining the Magic at age 25). He'll surely break most, if not all of NY's 3pt records.

2010 ANALYSIS
T-Mac looks D-O-N-E. He was even worse than Larry Hughes during his Knick tenure, which would have been unthinkable 5 years ago. McGrady spent the year recovering from microfracture surgery and barely played in Houston before being traded to the Knicks at the deadline. He was never able to get into game-shape, had his minutes limited and missed random games due to swelling in his knees.

FUTURE
McGrady is looking for a starting job on a contender, and said himself that he will retire if his knee will prevent him from being an all-star player. Hasta la vista, T-Mac.

2010 ANALYSIS
Sergio greatly improved his shooting and driving, which will at the very least make him a competent backup going forward. He is still held back by poor defense, and that's unlikely to ever change.

If Sergio doesn't re-sign with the Knicks, a lucrative career in Europe is very likely for him. His defensive flaws won't be nearly as exposed there.

2010 ANALYSIS
Walker broke out when arriving in NY, showing a decent offensive game (athletic dunks and 3pt shooting) that make him a good fit in D'Antoni's offense, but at the same time playing terrible defense that showed why he couldn't crack Boston's rotation. Still, he's a solid young role player on a team that could use more of them.

FUTURE
Walker's contract will likely be guaranteed in August, as at only 800K he is well worth the cost. He should backup Wilson Chandler next season, pending any trades.

2010 ANALYSIS
Barron came from nowhere to become the Knicks' starting center late in the year, and played extremely well - which begs the question - why didn't the Knicks sign a real center sooner? They had an open roster spot and injuries all year, and when they did bring someone in, it was Jonathan Bender who himself was barely healthy enough to play.

FUTURE
Barron may have played himself into an NBA gig. He is at the very least a legit backup center in the league, and while the Knicks were a good fit that catered to his mid-range game, he is hardly a lock to return as he'll surely look for the best available offer. Given the extreme lack of quality centers in 2010 free agency, it would not be inconceivable to see him return as the Knicks starting center.

2010 ANALYSIS
Giddens showed he had some promise as a defensive specialist, but only if he improves his shooting to a great degree.

FUTURE
Giddens still has SOME promise, but I don't think he'll get much more than training camp invites. He could use some time in the D-League as he's really raw on both ends, but as a 3-year vet he won't be eligible to be sent down if he makes an NBA roster.

2010 ANALYSIS
House was having a down year in Boston before getting traded for Nate Robinson. It was thought House might get rejuvenated under D'Antoni, but instead he shot the ball abominably and was a total downgrade from Nate Robinson in every imaginable way.

FUTURE
I'm going to guess that House re-signs with the Celtics, who never should have traded him in the first place.

2010 ANALYSIS
The Knicks brought Bender out of retirement to steal any potential minutes from lottery pick Jordan Hill, which is as big of an indictment of Mike D'Antoni as a coach as you'll ever see. As with any former retiree with no knees working himself into game shape, Bender had some decent nights, but they were outweighed by the bad/ineffective nights. He was frequently out of the lineup due to nagging injuries, and only cracked 20 minutes once.

FUTURE
Bender is unlikely to be re-signed by the Knicks, and might be done in the NBA again. As the Grizzlies learned when they signed Darius Miles out of retirement last season, these guys are medically retired for a reason.

ANALYSIS
Curry has played 10 games over the last two seasons and just can't seem to get healthy. He was never been in game-shape over the last two seasons, and few careers have undergone such epic collapses (starter to high-paid zero w/ no major injuries on the right side of 30?).

FUTURE
Curry recently stated he would not accept a buyout of the final season of his contract, which ultimately makes him a very large expiring contract at the 2011 trade deadline. I don't anticipate him being moved before that as his value is practically nil.
