NBA 2K10 ratings

I downloaded NBA 2K10 Draft Combine, and we're welcomed to a number of changes.

For one, we are now on a 25-99 scale instead of 50-99. This is to allow for greater player depth as well as the implementation of the D-League.

More importantly however, there are new rating categories, including the ability to edit clutch ratings I've been asking for the last 7 years.

2K also threw in descriptions for their ratings, which was about 5 years overdue. We were left guessing what ratings like quickness and offensive awareness really affected. Now we have concrete interpretations.

Bold denotes new ratings categories.

OFFENSE
Shot Inside - Ability to shoot from underneath the basket.
Shot Close - Ability to shoot from close range.
Shot Medium - Ability to shoot from mid-range.
Shot 3PT - Ability to shoot from 3PT.
Free Throw - Ability to shoot free throws.
Shot Low Post - Ability to shoot from the post.
Layup - Ability to make layups, contact layups, and alley layups.
Dunk - Affects dunk success, ability to dunk in traffic, and alley dunks.
Standing Dunk - Ability to perform standing dunks.
Shoot in Traffic - Ability to shoot while in traffic.
Shoot off Dribble - Ability to shoot while coming off a dribble.
Ball Handle - Affects the type of dribble moves the player can perform.
Off Hand Dribbling - Ability to perform dribble moves with the non-dominant hand.
Ball Security - Ability to secure the ball while dribbling.
Pass - Ability to throw accurate passes.
Offensive Low Post - Ability to perform post moves.
Hands - Ability to catch the ball.
Offensive Rebound - Ability to grab offensive rebounds.

DEFENSE
Defensive Low Post - Ability to defend in the post.
Block - Ability to block shots.
Steal - Ability to steal the ball.
Defensive Rebound - Ability to grab defensive rebounds.
On Ball Defense - Ability to guard and react when defending the ballhandler.

PHYSICAL
Hustle - Ability to dive for loose balls.
Speed - Affects how fast the player can run at full sprint.
Stamina - Affects the fatigue level while on the court.
Vertical - Leaping ability on dunks, rebounds, blocks and jump balls.
Durability - Ability to avoid injuries.
Quickness - Affects player agility while moving around the court.
Strength - Determines how successful the player will be when backing down in the post.

MENTAL
Offensive Clutch - Ability to perform on offense during late game situations.
Defensive Clutch - Ability to perform on defense during late game situations.
Emotion - Affects the type of reaction to referee calls.
Defensive Awareness - Help defense ability when picking up the ballhandler.
Offensive Awareness - Ability to react on loose balls and double teams.
Consistency - Ability to keep a shooting streak or get out of a shooting slump.

There are six new rating categories, not including the now editable clutch ratings. Here are my thoughts on each.

Shot Inside: This rating is music to my ears, because it takes away from the grey area of close and mid-range that we see in the NBA's hot zone charting that 2K employs. Inside shots are 6 feet and in. Close shots are 6-15 feet. Mid-range shots are 15 to the 3pt line.

Shot Low post: We now have Low-Post divided into two ratings. The shot rating will determine the success of shots, while the actual low post rating will determine what types of moves the player is capable of performing. We can now give a player like Ron Artest a solid post repetoire yet keep his success rate relatively low.

Off-Hand Dribbling: Honestly I need to see this one in action. In theory, it's nice that players will no longer be ambidextrous on the court. PGs will still be able to use both hands but it will surely penalize centers and other players that shouldn't be handling the ball.

Ball Security: This was another necessity, dividing the ball handling rating in half. Nate Robinson is a flashier dribbler than Chauncey Billups, but there is no question who is better at protecting the ball.

Emotion: I'm assuming players play better/worse if their emotions get the better of them.

Consistency: Hopefully this will fix the broken hot/cold shooting system. Role players shouldn't be lights out just on every shot just because they got two fastbreak layups.

Outlook: Howard was the 2009 defensive player of the year, and is the franchise player in Orlando. He needs to improve his offense beyond dunking, as he is not able to dominate the stronger centers in the league (and believe me, the league has taken notice). Learning how to pass out of double teams would help as well. At only 24 years of age, he's got plenty of time.

Outlook: Not the super athlete he once was), but still a go-to scorer thanks to his shooting and ability to take contact. VC is also one of the best passing SGs in the game and should easily fill the role vacated by Turkoglu. His ability to finish at the rim will only mean more putback chances for Howard. Only dunked 45 times last season, but that was still ELEVEN times more than Turkoglu (4).

Outlook: Nelson had a break out season before getting injured halfway through the year. It was quite impressive that the Magic were able to make it to the Finals without him (the departed Rafer Alston deserves a great deal of credit and seems to have gotten none of it), and it would have been best had he not tried to gut it out in the Finals as he just wasn't ready to contribute. Here's hoping he picks up where he left off, starting with his lights out shooting.

Outlook: Rashard has spent the last two years at PF, and I for one am happy he's (hopefully) back at SF. He only rates an 84 overall as a PF and I tire of the constant baseless criticism that he's rated too low. He's not a good rebounder or post player, so what do you expect? Hopefully he picks up some of Turkoglu's slack and shows a more well-rounded game rather than just providing threes as he has the last two years. Vince and Shard on the wings might be as scary as Ray and Shard were in Seattle... with Dwight Howard in the middle rather than Nick Collison.

He won't get as many jamming opportunities, but as long as he can keep hitting that mid-range shot and playing solid defense a starting role should be secure. I don't like him coming off the bench because he won't differ too much from Gortat.

Outlook: Orlando is probably going to try and fit Gortat at PF more frequently this season in an effort to make him worth that contract they matched. Defensively this should work wonders (as Gortat is a bigger Varejao), but offensively it might be a dud as neither player offers a perimeter game. Still, it shouldn't surprise anyone if Gortat is backing up PF and C and getting enough minutes to be considered the team's sixth man. They certainly aren't going to get much bang for their buck if he's only backing up Howard 12 mins a game.

Outlook: There are a lot of Magic fans who are high on Ryan Anderson, but I'm not one of them. If Brian Cook didn't work out in Orlando, why would Anderson? He has all the same flaws. He'll need to show he belongs in the first 10 games of the season with Rashard suspended - because there's literally no point to playing Anderson on a team that utilizes Rashard Lewis at PF.

Outlook: One of the top players in the game, and won his first Finals MVP. Above average in every facet of the game for a SG. Athleticism is on a slow decline, but he makes up for it with ever improving post skills. With the talent currently around him, there's no reason he shouldn't win additional championships. Could still stand to get his teammates more involved on the offensive end (GASOL).

Outlook: One of the best defensive players in the league, capable of guarding most SGs or PFs if necessary. He isn't quite the scorer he thinks he is, and one has to hope that he won't have any shot selection concerns in LA (this is really the only thing that could derail them at this point).

Outlook: An emerging post player despite being only 22 years old. Outlook: Many expected Farmar to take the step that would see him starting over Fisher this season. Instead, he regressed and lost playing time to a player who was nearly out of the league last summer (Shannnon Brown). Outlook: Brown worked his way into the rotation late in the year when Jordan Farmar was struggling. He rates a 76 as a SG, which is a more natural position for him (he's able to play PG in the Triangle since a true point isn't necessary). As a PG, he should draw some comparisons to Ron Harper on the mid-90s Bulls. A solid defensive player, slasher by nature, and a so-so outside shooter. It wouldn't be surprising to see him start if Fisher continues to decline. The Lakers must think he can do it if they'd give him 2 million a year in an economy where Allen Iverson can't even get a team to pay him that much.

Mike Bibby: 17-1-3-2-1-1 (7-14 FG, 2-7 3pt, 1-2 FT) 30/40 mins
Al Horford: 16-5-1-4-2-2 (8-15 FG, 0-1 FT) 30/40 mins
Jamal Crawford: 14-2-5-2-0-4 (4-7 FG, 0-1 3PT, 6-7 FT) 23/40 mins
Marvin Williams: 13-5-2-2-0-1 (5-7 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-2 FT) 28/40 mins
Josh Smith: 12-4-3-0-1-1 (6-6 FG) 30/40 mins
Zaza Pachulia: 8-1-0-0-1-1 (3-4 FG, 2/2 FT) 11/40 mins
Maurice Evans: 6-2-1-1-0-1 (1-5 FG, 4-4 FT) 10/40 mins
Joe Smith: 1-2-0-1-1-0 (0-3 FG, 1-2 FT) 8/40 mins

Hawk starters had slightly less minutes as the game was a 20 point blowout going into the 4th (the Knicks made a furious comeback in the final period).
Joe Johnson was much more passive in the second game, opting to play the role of facilitator rather than scorer.
Mike Bibby consequently increased his scoring load and only had 3 assists.
Al Horford had a better offensive game against NY's undersized frontline.
Josh Smith was 6-6 which makes him 9-10 over the two games. It seems like the only shots he gets are alley oops. Not entirely unrealistic, and it could be that the addition of trigger-happy Crawford has taken away from Smith's opportunities to display his poor shot selection.
Zaza Pachulia had a huge bounce back game posting 8 pts in 11 mins compared to 2 pts in 14 mins.
Joe Smith it 0-5 from the field but 3-4 from the line in 15 mins over the two games.

KNICKS 104
Al Harrington: 37-8-3-3-1-4 (15-20 FG, 0-1 3pt, 7-7 FT) 33/40 mins
David Lee: 14-8-2-1-1-2 (7-10 FG, 0-0 FT) 27/40 mins
Wilson Chandler: 11-2-1-0-0-0 (4-8 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-4 FT) 32/40 mins
Danilo Gallinari: 10-0-0-0-0-0 (4-5 FG, 2-3 3PT, 0-0 FT) 8/40 mins
Darko Milicic: 8-5-2-1-1-0 (3-5 FG, 2-2 FT) 14/40 mins
Larry Hughes: 8-0-6-3-0-1 (4-9 FG, 0-1 3PT) 24/40 mins
Nate Robinson: 6-1-7-0-0-3 (2-7 FG, 0-4 3PT, 2-3 FT) 21/40 mins
Jared Jeffries: 6-2-3-1-0-0 (3-6 FG) 16/40 mins
Chris Duhon: 4-2-10-1-0-3 (2-4 FG, 0-2 3PT) 29/40 mins

Knick starters all had more minutes than the previous game. The Knicks nearly came back from a 20 point defecit entering the 4th quarter but lost by 1.
Al Harrington was an absolute monster and I'll have to watch his signature highlights to find out why. I'm a little annoyed that he only took one three, but considering the success he had it's tough to argue with the CPU's decision.
David Lee did not get to the FT line, though this is probably due to improved defense from Horford.
Wilson Chandler rebounded from a dismal first game, but I would have liked to see him do more than score on a night where Al Harrington dominated offensively.
Danilo Gallinari was deadly in limited minutes. He played 10 fewer minutes but scored 2 more points compared to game one. Wouldn't surprise me if he were the reaso behind the 4th quarter comeback.
Darko Milicic came back down to earth after his spectacular game one. I would have been worried if he didn't.
Larry Hughes had 6 assists in 24 mins which was fairly surprising.
Nate Robinson struggled with his shot, going 0-4 on threes coming off a 3-3 game.
Chris Duhon outplayed Nate this time, logging double digit assists.
Toney Douglas and Jordan Hill recorded DNPs

Hawks 105
39-70 FG (55%)
5-14 3PT (35%)
22-27 FT (81%)
23 assists
12 turnovers
10 fouls
24 rebounds (7 off)
12 steals
7 blocks
46 points in paint
29 bench points
12 second chance points
12 fast break points

The Hawks bench played did a much better job this game, and the Hawks didn't embarrass themselves on the glass. They forced more steals which got them some easy fast break points to drive up their shooting percentage (9% better than last game), and also got to the line more thanks to the improved interior play.

Knicks 104
34-74 FG (59%)
3-13 3PT (23%)
13-17 FT (78%)
34 assists
13 turnovers
15 fouls
28 rebounds (6 off)
10 steals
3 blocks
62 points in paint
30 bench points
8 second chance points
11 fast break points

Both teams recorded more fast break points to drive up their shooting percentage (up 10%, though their excellent ball movement played a big part in this as well). NY did not have the same 3pt success as game 1, nor did they crash the boards as hard. They did not get to the line as much either which may have cost them in the end.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Joe Johnson (18 pts, 2 reb, 8 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 5-19 FG, 2-4 3PT, 6-7 FT, 34 mins)

+/- HEROES AND GOATS

Hawks
Hero: Al Horford (+13)
Goat: Joe Johnson (-18)

Horford was the leader in game 1 as well. Johnson was on the court for the whole Knick comeback it seems. Given his "Player of the Game" status it seems numbers don't tell the whole story.

Knicks
Hero: Danilo Gallinari (+15)
Goat: Larry Hughes (-11)

Looks like I was right, Gallinari did spark the 4th quarter comeback. Al Harrington was +14 so it seems this duo lit things up.

SIGNATURE HIGHLIGHTS
Johnson got all of his points on jumpers (aside from a postup hook on poor Nate Robinson), unlike game one where he got them all driving to the rack or in the post. This is not a surprise given that he was more of a distributor this game.
Williams looked fantastic going to the basket. The top 3 plays were all Marvin drives.
Forget what I said about Josh Smith, as he didn't recieve any lob passes this game and actually showed a mid-range touch. He was open on all his shots (thanks to deft passing) which is the reason for his perfect shooting. That makes me feel a bit better about his 9-10 FG over the two games since a better defensive team could have prevented that.
Al Horford made some incredible defensive plays.
Zaza owned Darko this time around.

Duhon had a sick alley oop to Lee (over Horford and Smith, play of the game IMO), as well as one to Harrington. Many of his assists were to Al Harrington which helps explain Al's dominance.
Jared Jeffries had his way with Joe Smith, and was another reason for the comeback.
Nate connected with Lee on an alley, and his two successful shots were an acrobati layup and a spin-move tear drop.
Harrington did most of his damage on basket cuts, and mid-range jumpers. He did not play with his back to the basket as he did in the first game. It would have been nice to see him post up once or twice, or shoot a couple more threes, but it's clear the CPU decided to keep going with what was working until the defense stopped it (which is what you'd do in real life anyway).

All in all I'm very impressed with the outcomes of both games. Watching the highlights I never really saw a moment where I said ugh, that would never happen in real life. The scores and stats were relatively realistic. I'd like to implement my tendency formulas to a couple other teams and see what happens. I'll keep you guys posted.

Updating my tendencies

So far I have only been posting my ratings, and not my player tendencies. This is partially because they take up a lot of space and not too many people find them interesting. It would think it'd be more beneficial for me to post a roster asap rather than spend time posting the tendencies for every team. However I would like to assure people that I have spent time getting the CPU to play more sim like.

Here are the stats from a CPU vs CPU simulation (10 min qtrs) I just completed.

PTS-REB-AST-STL-BLK-TO

KNICKS 103
Al Harrington: 20-12-0-1-1 (8-16 FG, 0-2 3pt, 4-4 FT) 25/40 mins
David Lee: 18-8-0-3-0-1 (8-11 FG, 2-2 FT) 23/40 mins
Darko Milicic: 16-8-3-3-1-1 (7-10 FG, 2-2 FT) 24/40 mins
Nate Robinson: 16-3-5-0-0-1 (6-11 FG, 3-3 3PT, 1-1 FT) 24/40 mins
Danilo Gallinari: 9-1-0-0-0-0 (2-8 FG, 1-5 3PT, 4-4 FT) 18/40 mins
Larry Hughes: 7-1-2-0-0-0 (3-8 FG, 1-2 3PT) 22/40 mins
Chris Duhon: 6-0-6-0-0-3 (1-1 FG, 4-4 FT) 24/40 mins
Wilson Chandler: 5-4-3-0-0-0 (2-9 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-3 FT) 25/40 mins
Jared Jeffries: 4-4-1-1-1-2 (2-5 FG) 12/40 mins
Toney Douglas: 2-1-1-1-0-0 (2-2 FT) 7/40 mins
Jordan Hill: 0-1-0-0-0-0 (N/A) 1/40 mins

This game was a blowout by the fourth quarter, so the Knicks bench got some extra run, including their two rookies who I hadn't allotted any rotation minutes. I didn't actually watch the game, but given that Nate and Darko had 16 each it's probably safe to say the 2nd unit actually brought them the blowout victory.

HAWKS 83
Joe Johnson: 23-1-5-1-1-2 (8-15 FG, 0-2 3pt, 7-9 FT) 33/40 mins
Mike Bibby: 18-1-7-2-3-3 (6-12 FG, 3-6 3pt, 3-4 FT) 32/40 mins
Marvin Williams: 10-1-0-0-2-0 (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT) 29/40 mins
Jamal Crawford: 10-0-3-0-1-3 (4-9 FG, 2-4 3PT) 16/40 mins
Al Horford: 8-11-3-0-3-1 (4-11 FG) 30/40 mins
Josh Smith: 8-7-2-2-1-1 (3-4 FG, 2-3 FT) 31/40 mins
Zaza Pachulia: 2-2-0-0-0-1 (1-4 FG) 14/40 mins
Maurice Evans: 2-0-0-1-0-1 (1-2 FG, 0-1 3PT) 12/40 mins
Joe Smith: 2-0-0-1-0-0 (0-2 FG, 2-2 FT) 7/40 mins

Atlanta didn't have a bad game offensively but the Knicks crushed them on the offensive glass. I suppose a team comparison wouldn't hurt.

Knicks 103
39-79 FG (49%)
5-13 3PT (38%)
20-22 FT (90%)
21 assists
8 turnovers
11 fouls
43 rebounds (10 off)

56 points in paint
47 bench points

4 fast break points

Hawks 83
31-67 FG (46%)
5-13 3PT (38%)
16-20 FT (80%)
20 assists
12 turnovers
12 fouls
23 rebounds (2 off)
7 steals
11 blocks
36 points in paint
16 bench points
4 second chance points
4 fast break points

Unfortunately, I don't have complete hotzones as the game only remembers the last 110 shots or so (both teams combined for about 135). But they are definitely balanced. I can watch the Signature Highlights for the game though.

HIGHLIGHTS
Nate Robinson with a halfcourt three
Darko dunk on Zaza
Al Harrington repeatedly man-handling Josh Smith in the post
Josh Smith with two alley-oops

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Darko Milicic (16 pts, 8 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk, 7-10 FG, 2-2 FT, 24 mins)

+/- HEROES AND GOATS

Hawks
Hero: Al Horford (+4)
Goat: Zaza Pachulia (-27... in 14 mins)

Atlanta's defense simply fell apart without Horford. Darko did most of his damage against Little Z.

Knicks
Hero: Nate Robinson (+27)
Goat: Chris Duhon (+0)

Not exactly a question of who the more effective guard was tonight.

All in all, this is a very exciting and realistic outcome! I'm going to run another match while I'm at work and then compare the results. Let's hope the Hawks man up and put together a better showing.

Outlook: I consider Johnson the most likely of all the star free agents to switch teams in 2010. The Hawks are not very likely to ever get past the second round with this team, and Johnson just isn't good enough to invest a max contract into. I would consider him a favorite to land with the Knicks considering he previously played for Mike D'Antoni and all their other FA options (LeBron, Wade) will likely dry up.

Outlook: J-Smoove is one of the most athletic defensive players in the game. However, the main reason he's masquerading as a PF (where he's outmatched on the boards) rather than SF is he's been unable to develop a quality perimeter game. That and the Hawks have terrible front-line depth and didn't really have a choice.

Outlook: The Jamal Crawford trade didn't make much sense to me, because Flip Murray gave them similar production last season at a fraction of the cost, and could have been re-signed for much less than the 19 million over 2 years Crawford is due to make. That's a lot to pay for a player who is only going to be backing up Johnson and Bibby, and it's not like Atlanta has money to throw around like that. Then it hit me. Crawford's their 2010 starter. He's a volume shooter with good ball-handling skills, just like Johnson. That's the only way the move makes sense.
