2010 ANALYSIS
Roy suffered a dropoff from his dominant 2009 (worse 3pt and FT shooting) but he was still the Blazers franchise player in a year wrecked by team-wide injuries. Roy wasn't able to avoid the injury bug either, missing 17 games, as well as 3 playoff games. He returned from knee surgery after only 8 days to help his team in the playoffs but was not himself and the team lost in 6 games to the Phoenix Suns.

FUTURE
Roy is entering the first season of his five year extension worth 82 million. I'm honestly a little concerned about his recurring knee injuries, but Roy still deserves the benefit of the doubt going forward.

Howard was the posterboy of the Blazers 2010 campaign. He was the starting center when Oden and Pryzbilla went down before the team picked up Camby.

Mills got hurt during summer league and spent much of the season in the D-League, playing only 38 NBA minutes this season.

Diener played only 9 games this season, and it wasn't because he was hurt the majority of the season.

FUTURE
Diener is a free agent and given his age and game that is completely ill-suited for the NBA level he's surely heading to Europe.

Generally I think your ratings are very good. Better than 2k10's ratings for sure. I was glancing around at the Blazer ratings and I'm sure I probably watch them more than you do so I have a few comments.

Andre Miller, I think you've overrated his perimeter defense and underrated his defensive awareness. Andre is a pretty weak lateral defender, not terrible, but weak. You gave him a 69 which is about average or slightly above average. About a 60 would be better. Miller gets a lot of steals by intercepting passes, especially in the open court. He stops a lot of fast breaks by grabbing steals. I believe defensive awareness is the stat you'd want pretty high to make him do that. So I'd suggest bumping him up about 5 points in that.

Nic Batum's perimeter defense has been underrated. He's the clear defensive stopper on the team and yet he's not even listed as a B+ on your list. That's not right. The guy guards people from PG to PF and has very good lateral quickness, and PHENOMENAL use of his hands. His defensive stance is perfect. He's absolutely brilliant with his arms on defense, and his physical length even exaggerates it. You've got to find a way to increase Nicolas Batum's defensive rating to at least a B+.

With Jerryd Bayless I think you've lowered his foul tendency too low. What Bayless does is he goes out and nose-guards the opposing PG from 35 feet away from the hoop, and he picks up a lot of pointless fouls doing that. He's actually got good lateral quickness, so I'd also suggest bumping up his perimeter defense a few points.

Joel Przybilla's consistency is a 40? You actually lowered it? Why? He's got to be one of the most consistent guys in the league. He has ZERO offensive ability. The things that you don't really have 'off' nights doing are playing defense and rebounding. He's always a great rebounder, and his defense is "inconsistent" because he's great at guarding post up centers and weak at guarding jump shooting defenders. That's the only inconsistency I ever see, and that inconsistency is in who is opponent is and their style of play, not him. You really need to raise Przybilla's consistency rating AT LEAST back to where to was.

And lastly, Greg Oden's foul tendency. Is it really high enough? Because he is very much a "go for the block" kind of defender. Even if it's an easy dunk, Oden goes for the block. Even if Oden is way out of position and has no chance of blocking the shot, he goes for the block. The guy only averaged 23.9 minutes a game, and don't think for a second that's because he was tired. It's all fouls.

Anyway, if you sim a season and Oden and Bayless get enough fouls, then it's fine. They just both seem low in that area.

Thanks for reading.

Any reason why you raised Greg Oden to a 80???

Rashidi said...

Pretty big comment to tackle. Here goes....

From my experiences with DefAwr over the years with 2K, it's the attribute that actually makes the offensive player miss the shot. Players in the vicinity of high defawr players will "magically" miss more shots. Ever blow a fastbreak layup with nobody in front of you? The DefAwr of the trailing player is the reason.

I'm also aware Miller is a poor man defender (as are most of the bulky PGs) and the 69 is likely an oversight; I'd probably drop it to 64-66.

I tried getting Batum's perimeter defense up to B+ (it's a B) but it's impossible because steals carry a heavy weight in the perimeter defense category and Batum just doesn't get them. He's certainly a more valuable defender than say, Marcus Banks, who is the only player to register a B+ among the teams I've done so far.

2K's fouling scales are messed up - the players in the middle of the spectrum are mostly fine, but the players who don't foul are extremely low and the foul prone players are mostly way too high. In Oden's case, I signed him in association mode when he hit the free agent market in 2012. He was the only player on my team that I couldn't keep happy because he was complaining about his playing time, even though I was giving him 36-40 mpg in rotations. I checked at the end of the year and it was because he was averaging 4.5 fouls in like 26 mpg (and this is Oden with 2 years of improvement, mind you). That's way too much. Oden is far from being the most foul prone player in the league. Jason Collins for example is commiting just as many fouls and barely blocking anything.

Consistency affects hot/cold frequency for a player. Defense/rebounding aren't part of the equation. Pryz rarely catches fire on the offensive end. He cracked double figures 3 times in 30 games, and took more than 5 shots in a game a grand total of twice in 30 games. He is simply not a player who gets hot.
