9/18 Observations
Thus far only six big men (PF or C) have seen Overall rating decreases: Dwight Howard, Anderson Varejao, JaVale McGee, Carl Landry, Glen Davis, and Anthony Bennett.  For the most part every other player at those positions has skyrocketed.

9/11 Observations
  • LeBron James (98 Overall) is the highest rated active player
  • Dirk Nowitzki (seemingly) gets proper value in the new ratings system.  It remains to be seen if his weaknesses (blocks, rebounds, etc) are still over-compensated to get him there.
  • Nick Van Exel and Rick Fox are still missing from the 97-98 Lakers team.
9/9 Observations
  • 2K announced last week that only four players would have a 90 rating.  Kevin Durant (95), LeBron James, and Chris Paul are widely considered the top three, but the 4th player has been a bit of a mystery, with many fans speculating Dwight Howard or Carmelo Anthony.  It appears that Tim Duncan is the 4th player, which makes some sense.  Duncan just lead the Spurs to their 5th championship, and 2K's formula alleges to value defense and other role player qualities that Duncan continues to possess despite his declining offensive role.
  • Manu Ginobili is the first player to see an OVR decrease out of the 61 players revealed so far.
  • Ratings at the top appear similarly structured to previous years.  As has been suspected, role players are going up to better reflect their values, and most players should be in the 70-79 range this year.
9/8/14 Observations
Rudy Gobert's 19 point jump in OVR highlights what I've been talking about regarding centers. Post game is no longer required for centers to get a solid rating (Gobert's elite rebound/block rates certainly help), which is leading to huge jumps for backup centers.

9/5/14 Observations
Rookie ratings seem on par with my own.  Some are over/underrated relative to draft position versus actual experience/skill level but they are otherwise fine.  The gap between top tier and lower end rookies has closed significantly.

9/4/14 Observations
  • Andre Drummond's rating seems to be a product of the new rating system, wherein a player's ratings are levied against multiple archetype formulas (at least based on my understanding).
  • Shane Larkin's 72 rating also appears to be a product of that (for better or worse).  In my personal roster I have Larkin rated 71 Overall despite a weak rookie season.  This is because Larkin's elite athleticism (Speed, Quickness, Vertical all in 90s) brings his OVR up considerably, leading to him being overrated relative to his actual production (meaning Larkin will rate well as an "Athletic" PG).
9/3/14 Observations (#401-424)
  • Overall ratings are up across the board for the lowest rated players in the NBA (with the exception of Brandon Davies, who remained 65 OVR).  It remains to be seen whether any attributes for these players were actually changed, or if the overall rating changes are entirely attributed to the new formula (I believe it is a bit of both for most of the bottom feeders).
  • 2K has touted a new rating formula that gives more weight to defensive attributes.  This is why the centers are jumping in value while the point guards are relatively the same rating.  The goal appears to be making things "fair" across the board as the worst players at each position are now equally balanced in value.
  • There is not a single shooting guard in the bottom 24.  While this struck me as a bit odd, this is consistent with ratings of previous 2K games.  In NBA 2K14, Will Barton (59) and Andre Roberson (58) are the only active players with overall ratings < 60.
  • Unsigned NBA players are not part of these rankings, or else there would be 100 extra players.
  • Miroslav Raduljica is still on the Bucks which means the roster does not yet reflect the Carlos Delfino trade that occured on 8/26 (ditto for Hasheem Thabeet).
  • I'm assuming that minor missing players like Casper Ware, Chris Wright, etc) have not been added to the game (or else they'd be on this list).

Ok I am a Pelicans fan. but this strikes me as something I guess I never paid attention to last year's game. (I'm primarily a MyCareer player.) But Ajinca was a 48 last year? And this year is at least a 67? That's cool and all because I like the guy and I don't think he ever deserved a 48 by any means, but he damn sure didn't jump up 19 points. I would put him at a low 60's last year. Maybe a 62. So... there's no way he'd be an 81 this year. (19 point jump) I wonder... I'm guessing he'll be a 68 or so this year. If so, I... I dunno. Just rambling.

Rashidi said...

Ajinca was rated 48 Overall because that's what his largely unchanged ratings from 2K12 translated to. If I'm not mistaken he was 43 Overall in that game. He obviously improved a great deal overseas during his 3 year hiatus, and his updated rating will surely reflect that given his 56 game 2014 sample.

Unknown said...

Ok so what do you predict Ajinca being this year? Obviously he's a 67 or higher. Let's be mean and say 67. How does that happen you think? And why that much of a jump? Is it because they are handlign defense differently this year? Or offense? What's your best guess? (Considering Ajinca was fair on defense this past year, but only half-ass on offense)

Unknown said...

Also, does whatever formula that applies to Ajinca, apply to all of the other players?

will your rosters for 2k15 be available for Xbox1 or PS4 ? I am trying to decide on which console, and this will be my deciding factor

Rashidi said...

I can say that I have PS4 and have no idea if I'll ever get XB1.

Sofa King said...

Looks like i'll be getting a PS4 then, looking forward to your rosters this upcoming season

Two things:

1. 2K made a statement saying that there will be 4 players with a rating above 90. Tim Duncan is a 90, but not above a 90 so he is not a part of that highest tier class in 2K.

2. Kevin Love is listed as a 90 based off of this screenshot below for his player profile. On the bottom, we see the Rebouding bar categorized with a 90. (http://media.operationsports.com/shots/1410368615-media.jpg)

Rashidi said...

1. 90+ was written, which generally means >= 90 rather than > 90.

2. The photo is taken at the completion of a season. The photo displays the progression of an attribute over the course of the season. Love starts at an 89 but ended the season at 90.

I find overall ratings in NBA 2K, or sports games in general, are incredibly arbitrary. I get the feeling, we'll load up the game and see the same usual ratings. Ryan Anderson will have 60 medium range shot, same rating he's had since 2011, despite shooting 44.3% and 47.8% the past two seasons which should give him a rating 20 points higher.

I understand it's a culture of ranking and rating everything in sports, but I feel like these overall ratings are just a smokescreen for a lack of ratings changes and even if the ratings are not a smokescreen, then the ratings should be adjusted to needs and/or play style not a simple stamp of a players value.

I have first hand knowledge that attributes will be much improved in NBA 2K15.

...Of course, if I turn out to be wrong, I'll be writing about it.

LeBron 98 (-2)?? so does that mean his rating was 100 in 2k14

huin said...

If you are telling that LeBron is having a rate of 100 in 2k14 according your measurements then give your opinion about Jason Terry74(-2)?? According to me, this is not a good metric to judge the rank of these top 10 nba players of all time. What do you think?
