MLB 2K10 Player Ratings

Continuing Real 2K Insider's expanding coverage to MLB, here are the overall ratings for every player at the major league level, seperated by position. Tell me who you think is over/underrated!

This list took me two days to compile, as I also made a seperate list with each team's breakdown. I will post that next if I get enough demand :)

Pending any unforeseen complications, I will be working on a roster for this game.

I'm a Cards fan, and it's a nitpick, but even objectively I don't see how Ryan Braun places over Matt Holliday, even if it's by a point.

Braun has beaten Holliday in OPS once out of the last 3 seasons (though it was the most recent one). And defensively, Braun is lackluster, which I think even a Brewers fan would acknowledge. Holliday is average to slightly above average defensively.

Well if defensive clutchness was a rating in this game, I think we'd all know what Matt Holliday would get...

Chris K said...

OK, fine, so his crotch is subpar defensively. :)

Rashidi said...

Holliday's numbers were Coors inflated, and recent statistics bear more weight.

It's tough to really say what the deal is without the detailed ratings.

Plus, as a Cards fan, you're remembering the 1000 OPS Holliday, not the 830 OPS Holliday that he was for the first half of the year. As a Cardinal, he certainly was better than Braun, but overall Braun had the better season.

I'm pretty sure Jermaine Dye plays left field, though I'm not 100%.
Joe Crede seems underrated.. he just had a bad year last year.

Anonymous said...

Rangers FYI Josh Hamilton is moving to left field this year to help prevent his body from wearing down, and Julio Borbon is being givin a shot at center, with Nelson Crus in right, David Murphy as the 4th outfielder/left fielder. And Vlad at DH/RF occasionally.

Chris K said...

I don't dispute that Braun had the better offensive season, and I'm definitely aware of the Oakland numbers.

Just saying Holliday has a better 3 years, and defensively he's far better, which I'd think would easily put him over the top.

Fangraphs has Holliday at 5.7 wins above replacement level for last year, and Braun at 4.8. I'm sure 2k isn't going on those numbers, but I'm still surprised given Braun's well known defensive issues.

Rashidi said...

I'm not a big fan of three year splits. There just isn't much connection between what a player did in 2007 has any bearing on what he'll do in 2010.

It might make sense for lesser players like 4th outfielders or utility guys, but for players who get a full body of work in every year, what's the point?

Rashidi said...

I'm hopeful that 2K allows us to change player positions this year. Last year they did not. It's especially necessary for the outfielders since they change positions so frequently with all the injuries and what not.

Chris K said...

I think 3 years is good just to make sure you're not overvaluing an exceptionally high or low year. Especially with younger players who aren't likely to decline significantly due to wear and tear.

But your point is fair enough.

I would evaluate each player on a case by case basis. Numbers are not always reflective of ability, ESPECIALLY in baseball.

i think that brian mccann is a little underated i believe he is about a 90 hes the second best catcher in the leage next to joe mauer

Anonymous said...

i would also like to add that jair jurjens is a phenominal pitcher and should deff be high 80's low 90's and tommy hanson i know he only pitched half a season but the kid has nasty stuff i think he shoulb be in the high 80's

Rashidi said...

McCann is already the best catcher in the National League. He is a good player, but after putting up only 834 OPS last season, I don't think he deserves to be all that close to Joe Mauer. 90 rated players are MVP candidates, and McCann simply ain't that good yet.

Rashidi said...

At first glance Jurrjens seems underrated after putting up a low 2.60 ERA, which was 3rd in the NL sandwiched betweeen Tim Lincecum and Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is 90 overall which would seem like a good barometer for Jurrjens.

However, a closer look at Jurrjens' stats shows us a few red flags that indicate his ERA might have been a bit of a fluke.

BB/9
Wainright: 2.5
Jurrjens: 3.1

K/9
Wainright: 8.2
Jurrjens: 6.4

K/BB
Wainwright: 3.21
Jurrjens: 2.03

Wainright also led the league in Innings Pitched, and won the Gold Glove.

BABIP = Batting Average on Balls in Play. This stat essentially measures how effective a defense was at turning balls in play into outs.

BABIP (league average .299)
Wainright: .301
Jurrjens: .274

Much of Jurrjens' success can be attributed to his significantly lower BABIP (i.e. a factor that was largely out of his hands).

In layman's terms, he was just lucky. He will be hardpressed to repeat last season's success without improving upon his perephirals.

Rashidi said...

Almost forgot about Hanson. Although he was just a rookie, he seems a bit more legit than Jurrjens.

BB/9
Hanson: 3.2
Jurrjens: 3.1
Wainright: 2.5

K/9
Wainright 8.2
Hanson: 8.2
Jurrjens: 6.4

K/BB
Wainright: 3.21
Hanson: 2.52
Jurrjens: 2.03

Hanson posted a K-Rate on par with Wainright while his walk rate is right there with Jurrjens.

BABIP
Wainright: .301
Hanson: .279
Jurrjens: .274

His low ERA can likewise be attributable to some luck, but without any regression in his perephirals he's a good bet to post an ERA between 3.00 and 3.25. Any improvement in his peripherals (like say, dropping his walk rate) and we're looking at a potential Cy Young candidate.

Where is chris tillman of the orioles? He is almost defintely penciled into their rotation and should be there all year. Plus, Brian matusz as a 73?? He is competing for ROY this upcoming season and he already has four pitches he throws for strikes with great movement. I think he could be considered way higher than that and tillman could be a 73.

Rashidi said...

Tillman is likely in AAA at default settings and it's anyones guess what his rating is. The game drops in a few days so we'll find out soon enough.

I think Joey Votto is severely under rated he should at least be in the 90's he's better then at least 5 players that are rated better then him in the game

Anonymous said...

I'd REALLY love to get a full list of player ratings - the players listed along with their contact/power/speed/etc...

I saw some screenshots but they weren't nearly as organized as this list.

yeah...LESTER is probably a little upset with his rating

Ryan Howard definitely deserves to be in the 90's, at least 90. His defense was much improved last year and he puts up amazing number offensively every year. He is also better than some of those rated higher (Lee, Berkman and Morales).

Morneau also seems a little low and desrves a 90.

Lidge is very low at 74 when he was the best 2 years ago and very good in the playoffs last year after a dismal regular season. He still has good stuff and deserves a solid 80 rating.

Rashidi said...

I agree about Votto, he was 3rd in the NL in OPS and is a plus defender at 1B.

Rashidi said...

Also, Howard may have improved on defense but that was merely a leap from terrible to bad. He committed 14 errors last season, which was down from the 19 he had in 2008. I believe he led all 1B in errors.

I don't normally evaluate defense w/ errors, but it's not like Howard is making extra plays due to great range or anything.

Rashidi said...

Mornaeu seems underrated, but the game probably weights batting average and power over batting eye. Mornaeu's average dropped 30 points last season though he boosted his walk rate and power to compensate. However, with an 878 OPS (873 in 2008) he is hardly an elite 1B option, merely a good one.

Rashidi said...

Finally, this is MLB 2K10, not MLB 2K9. Lidge is coming off a total nightmare season, and the fact that he is still rated 74 is giving him the benefit of the doubt. 99% of middle relievers are rated lower than that. He was the worst closer in baseball last season, and is justifiably rated as such.

Hits/9
2009: 11.0
2008: 6.5
Career: 7.3

HR/9
2009: 1.7
2008: 0.3
Career: 0.9

BB/9
2009: 5.2
2008: 4.5
Career: 4.1

SO/9
2009: 9.4
2008: 11.9
Career: 12.1

SO/BB
2009: 1.79
2008: 2.63
Career: 2.99

I don't understand how players can be god awful and then fans want to give them free passes for their shoddy performance.

Looking at the perepherals Lidge didn't have a great 2008 either. He was below his usual averages in all categories but Hits and Homers, and that Home Run rate (the main cause of his low 2008 ERA) looks incredibly flukey.

HR/9
2006: 1.2
2007: 1.2
2008: 0.3
2009: 1.8

Ben Wahrle said...

Rashidi. Thank God finally stepped up. Howard is not a 90 due to his .250 avg and Lidge's era should make him a 70 at best . Todd Coffey (2.90 era) was a solid reliever and yet his rating is a 72, how can Lidge be better in this game. Go Brewers

Chris K,
one more thing about the Braun Holliday comparison, is that Braun was one of the best players in baseball against tough pitchers. Against the toughest pitchers in the NL he had put up some wicked numbers. Not sure if that is something that played into the ratings either. I know they wanted to incorporate a lot of "behind the scenes" stats into the game this year. It may have been a factor.
That and Braun is younger, and most people believe he has not yet peaked. The game may factor in expected development/regression of players to a certain degree.

Adam said...

Maybe I'm blind, but I didn't even see Ted Lilly on the list.
I'm a Cubs fan, born and bred, but I think many of them are overrated...i.e. Soto, Soriano, Zambrano, etc.
Fukudome is the best example, being positioned above both B.J. Upton and Nyjer Morgan.
Cubs homers must have been part of the ratings staff.

jeter a 90 really hye jeter underrated underrated they're not excepting you for the rediculous freak of nature you are

This is great BUT!!!! I have a draft coming and I need to look at batting power/speed/contact/pinching ratings, please if you have the time make a full list of ratings…you can use for Overall (O) Power (P) Speed (S) Contact ( C), for example 1B John Doe O = 80, P=92, S=70, C =62….this will help a lot….THANKS!!!!!

I think chris young, pitcher for the padres is ridiculously underrated. He was one of the top pitchers in the league just a couple years ago, and last year was not his best due to injuries, like getting hit in the face by a ball off the bat of pujols. he just never had the chance to get in a groove last year. he should at least be mid 80's as i think we will all see by his work this next season.

Anonymous said...

why is manny such a high overall he has a good bat no doubt but his fielding is worse then someone who plays in little league but he can do some work with a bat for sure

Anonymous said...

No way Rich Harden should be an 89 hes such a dissapointment never living up to expectations always getting injured and not pitching as well as he could. And Ryan Howard should deff. be the 2nd best 1st baseman along with fielder than Tiexera. And Lincecum, Grienke and Halladay are deff. the best 3 pitchers in baseball like thoses ratings cause they deserve it big time.

YOU KNOW WHAT GUY! INSTEAD OF WORRYING ABOUT THESE PLAYERS STATS! LET 2K SPORTS KNOW THEY RUINED THIS F%^&ING GAME SO BAD! THE SHOW IS DESTROYING MLB 2K10 THAT IT IS NOT EVEN FUNNY ANYMORE

Anonymous said...

Idk bout you who is complaining about hitting, but I have a great BA in that game, I bunted once vs. my good friend for fun and I stole twice on the same friend. I hit bombs with everyone, i pick the reds and play 23 year olds who use the rangers. leadoff 450 foot opposite field shots with drew stubbs, jay bruce, votto, phillips, and mostly ramon hernandez is what im about and i pitch shutout lights out. i was homer bailey(70 OVR) and pwned CJ Wilson, around a 78-80 OVR and gave up 1 hit. 20 k's in 8 IP, closing it with cordero. DAON'T COMPLAIN BOUT HITTING B/C U SUCK

Show me how Lance Berkman > Justin Morneau...it just can't be done...

Unknown said...

I like most ratings, but i don't like Todd Helton and Vlad Guerrero being so low rated. I know they are getting older, but I mea, Helton is still a 325% hitter, sure he isn't as much of a power hitter as he used to but come on. And the same goes for Vladdy, but he still has power

Anonymous said...

I think Ricky Ramero and Travis Sinder are underrated they should be at least 85 Ricky should be 90

Anonymous said...

Justin Morneau is the best first baseman in the AL. He should be at least a 93 or 94.

the stats aren't even that real.........i have the game, and they look different..... mccann is higher up.....pedroia is 3rd or 4th....kinsler is second....zimm is lower in the list....the ss list until OVR 80 is ****ed up........hamilton is 4th in CF list and there should be one above 90.....most of the SPs and ranked lower as they are-CC is a 98 like Lincecum...top 4 closers are in this order:Mariano(94), Papelbon(94),Joe Nathan(92), and andrew bailey(90).......there is no specific DH list.....GO BOSTON!
