2010 ANALYSIS
I was more critical of Nowitzki than most in 2010. His rebounding has declined quite a bit over the last few years, and he still doesn't really make his teammates better. Dwyane Wade for example, makes all the big plays on offense, but ALSO makes all the big plays on defense for his team AND is the only player on his team creating looks for all of his teammates. Dirk just doesn't have that type of hold over a game. Sure, he might have some great individual scoring performances, but it takes more than that to win a championship, and that's ultimately why Dirk's list of embarrssing playoff defeats and collapses continues to grow. Great players can contribute to their team in other ways besides scoring. The sooner the Mavs realize Dirk will never be able to win by himself, the better off they'll be.

FUTURE
Dirk recently grumbled about possibly opting out, but we all know that ain't happening. The Mavs will sign him to extension before he ever hits free agency. They should be careful not to overpay too much though, as his defense, rebounding, and driving game will only continue to decline with age.

2010 ANALYSIS
Kidd had a solid year across the board, even showing us that last season's 3pt numbers with Dallas were no fluke. Kidd even made the all-star team this season, although that had more to do with the game being in Dallas than him being a better player than Carlos Boozer (he certainly wasn't, but was at least more deserving of the selection than Chris Kaman).

FUTURE
Kidd has two more seasons on his contract. The team could go in a different direction via trade, but I expect Kidd to be a member of the Mavs next season.

2010 ANALYSIS
Butler had a very subpar season across the board. It was initially thought his struggles related to a lesser role in Flip Saunder's PG oriented offense in Washington, but then he went on to struggle in Dallas as well. Dallas needs him to return to form if they're going to have any hopes of overcoming this season's disappointing finish.

FUTURE
There were rumblings that the Mavericks would use Butler as trade bait in their quest to pair Dirk with a top 2010 free agent. One interesting possibility I'll throw out there - a sign/trade for Shaq if LeBron James leaves Cleveland.

2010 ANALYSIS
Terry had a solid season, but it was actually his worst as a Maverick. His shooting numbers dropped badly, from .500 FG% in his first year as a Mav to .463 last season when he was the 2009 Sixth Man of the Year, to .438 this season where he really wasn't in the discussion. His defense also slipped a bit.

FUTURE
Terry should continue to be productive for the duration of his contract, but like the rest of Dallas' core, he's fighting Father Time.

2010 ANALYSIS
I want to know what happened to Marion's shot. He is now a mere 21-105 (.200) from 3pt range in two and a half seasons since leaving Phoenix, and was only 3-19 (.158) this season. Marion's continued decline from distance has turned him into strictly a putback/fastreak guy and defensive role player.

FUTURE
Marion had the worst season of his career at 31 years of age, kind of expected for a player so reliant on his athleticism. Good thing he's signed for four more years and 32 million, right?

Beaubois had a "Barbosian" effect when he took the court in Dallas. His speed was an excellent asset that was ultimately underutilized on a team lacking athleticism.

FUTURE
Beaubois might be the starting SG next season if Butler gets moved. At the very least, he should take more minutes from Barea and the aging Kidd.

2010 ANALYSIS
Haywood's defensive impact was finally noticed by the fans and league, as Washington was often lost without him on the court. Because of this, big things were expected out of the Mavs when they picked up Haywood, but instead he mostly played a reserve role behind Dampier.

FUTURE
Haywood is a 2010 free agent, but will probably be re-upping with the Mavs, who can offer him the most money. Miami and Cleveland are other possibilities if the teams opt not to re-sign their respective O'Neals.

2010 ANALYSIS
The oft-underrated Dampier continued to do what he does best - covering Dirk's behind on the boards and defense while getting little credit for the job he does.

FUTURE
Dampier's 2011 contract is fully unguaranteed, which gives the Mavs the option of voiding Damp's contract and re-signing him to a far cheaper rate, or trading him to a team looking to avoid the luxury tax, and re-signing him after that team void his contract. Damp will be 35 years old next season, and a move to the bench will probably be good for him.

Barea continued to be a reasonable backup, although I'm still unsure of why the team needs an offensive minded backup PG when they already have Jason Terry.

FUTURE
Dallas holds a team option for Barea's 2011 services that they will likely exercise given how cheap it is. They could trade him however, to give a bigger role to the incumbant Rodrigue Beaubois.

Thomas played well as Dirk's backup early in the year, but then left the team to care for his ill wife.

FUTURE
I think Thomas is done in the NBA simply because he'll be looking out for his family's health. I remember his sister and cousin suddenly died when he was a member of the Knicks, and it affected his play on the court all season long. He surely takes his wife's condition seriously. Best wishes to Tim and his family.

2010 ANALYSIS
Najera hasn't been an effective player since signing his 4-year contract with New Jersey. He took Tim Thomas and Kris Humphries' place in Dallas, but was largely a downgrade from either of those two players.

FUTURE
Najera's last two seasons are not guaranteed, and that's a very good thing for the Mavericks. Najera shouldn't be making anything more than the veteran's minimum at this point (if he's even going to hold a roster spot in the NBA).

Carroll was a decent player with a nice shooting touch in Charlotte but has been completely buried in Dallas, earning 4.7 million dollars to play a grand total of 121 minutes this season.

Whoa. Three teams in four days. Take it easy Rashidi.
I know we all want your work like a desperate crack addict but it's no good if you die from exhaustion.

Great work as always. Hope you finish all the teams.

Anonymous said...

Please put the predictions and analysis in

Johnson said...

^I agree, you had predictions and analysis for lower teams and it would be unfitting to skip them for the Mavericks. We want to hear your insight.

Anonymous said...

What, you don't have opinions of your own that's why you demand Rashidi your own whims?

Let the man do his thing. If he wants to do it that way, let him be. Don't expect him to babysit you.

Johnson said...

Not that, it's more interesting to hear his insights because he has the smart. He normally does it, but he didn't need to skip it. Why do it for lame-ronto.

Anonymous said...

My bad for the previous comment.
Yeah, his insights are good reads but maybe he doesn't have enough time to write one and went straight to posting those info. Maybe he will include that write-up in the next teams or so when he feels like it.

Johnson said...

It's cool dude.

Anonymous said...

No analysis? No love for the Mavs?

Rashidi said...

I'll get to it, just been busy the last two days.

Jose said...

Great work as always, Rashidi. Who do you think Roddy will unseat between Kidd and Terry? I think keeping all three would really be redundant, and they need a true SG. Also, would getting Shaq at this point in his career be pointless. They need a dominant interior presence, but he needs to be younger than 30.

Rashidi said...

I think Beaubois makes Barea and Butler are goners. Both have expiring contracts in 2011, and I think the plan has always been to rent Butler and then move him in a trade this summer. Butler does most of his scoring from mid-range and the Mavs obviously don't need that with Dirk and Terry around.

Barea is also redundant on a team with Terry, and Beaubois is probably the first Devin Harris type presence they've had that can get to the rim since they moved him for Kidd.

Rashidi said...

Also, Beaubois is probably more necessary than a true SG for the Mavs, because they need a PG who can keep up with the league's quicker points for Kidd. They don't really need a true SG because they basically have a 7 foot SG up front.

The Mavs do need a young big but there simply aren't any available - it's a thin free agent crop as well. I think they might re-sign Haywood, but Shaq would still be a major upgrade over Dampier who is also up there in years. Bringing back Haywood gives the Mavs a very favorable platoon, similar to the Shaq/Zo days in Miami. Cleveland has shown us he doesn't need to be a featured player anymore - and that was the mistake Terry Porter made in Phoenix - that ultimately led to their demise.

Anonymous said...

Woah save that for when you revisit your playoff predictions Rashidi! Good Stuff, thanks for updating the blog as well.
