New York Knicks NBA 2K10 Ratings (Final)

NEW YORK KNICKS
73 Offense, 67 Defense, 70 Overall

2009-2010 SUMMARY
W/L: 29-53 (22nd in NBA, 11th in East, 3rd in Atlantic)
PYTH: 31-51 (23rd)
SRS: -4.00 (24th)
PACE: 94.0 (8th)
ORTG: 107.6 (17th)
DRTG: 111.6 (27th)

New York started the season 1-9 but went 9-6 in the month of December to give the fans some hope. Unfortunately, their success proved unsustainable, and the Knicks waved the white flag at the trade deadline when they shipped out Jared Jeffries, Larry Hughes, and lottery pick Jordan Hill in exchange for the massive expiring contract of Tracy McGrady. New York finished the year 10-18 after the trade, as the defense completely fell apart without Jeffries.

2010 SUMMARY
Lee was the Knicks' first all-star selection of the last 10 years, the first Knick since Patrick Ewing to average 20/10, recorded the franchise's first triple double in nearly a decade, and lead all NBA centers in assists. He made the jump from glorified role player to legit all-star, and stylistically is basically an unselfish version of Zach Randolph (who was also an all-star this year... Randolph's better with his back to the basket, but Lee has the much better faceup/driving game). Ultimately, Lee is overmatched defensively at center, and will surely be back to his natural PF one way or the other in 2011.

FUTURE
Lee is a 2010 free agent, should command at least 10 million per year on his new deal, and may have played his last game with the Knicks, as they have made it clear they prefer Chris Bosh & Amare Stoudemire. I'm optimistic that Lee will eventually re-sign (as I don't think the Knicks have much of a shot at Bosh/Amare... or LeBron/Wade for that matter), but if another team (say, the LA Clippers, or the soon to be Brooklyn Nets) makes him an offer he can't refuse, he could walk and leave the Knicks with nothing.

2010 ANALYSIS
Harrington was just as good in 2010 as he was in 2009, scoring a career high 20.9 ppg. His shot wasn't there early in the year, but Al made up for it by getting to the line 5.2 times per game, which was also a career high. His defense is also underappreciated, as he is one of the league's leaders in charges drawn. That said, his rebounding is weak and he doesn't make his teammates better on the offensive end. He's at his best as a sixth man, where his skillset plays out best.

FUTURE
Harrington is a 2010 free agent, and is unlikely to be re-signed by the Knicks as he cuts into Gallinari's shots and development. Without Al and David Lee, there will be a lot of shots to go around for whomever their replacements are. He could join a team like the Bulls who are desperate for 3pt shooting and post scoring.

2010 ANALYSIS
Chandler is a versatile defender who has started at SG, SF, and PF over the last two seasons. He's continued to improve on both ends, and is at his best when he is driving to the basket rather than settling for his average jumper.

FUTURE
Chandler appears to be locked into the starting SG role for the Knicks, though he could be moved in a trade if they can find a better option. He'll be a free agent in 2011, and the Knicks could be reluctant to give him a contract extension this summer.

2010 ANALYSIS
Played surprisingly well for a 29th pick, and basically took Nate Robinson's role on the team when Nate was traded. Douglas is even worse at running point than Robinson, but is at least much more promising as a defender.

FUTURE
Should be the Knicks' backup PG for the next couple years, pending any trades. He's old for a prospect, which limits his upside.

2010 ANALYSIS
Gallinari overcame the back injury he suffered in his rookie season and showed no ill-effects in 2010. He was 2nd in the NBA in threes made, and his offensive game showed signs of life once Al Harrington went down with injury.

FUTURE
We're looking at either the next Hedo Turkoglu or Peja Stojakovic. At only 21 years old, Gallo is well ahead of the curve, and looks like a good bet to easily eclipse Turkoglu (who wasn't any good until joining the Magic at age 25). He'll surely break most, if not all of NY's 3pt records.

2010 ANALYSIS
T-Mac looks D-O-N-E. He was even worse than Larry Hughes during his Knick tenure, which would have been unthinkable 5 years ago. McGrady spent the year recovering from microfracture surgery and barely played in Houston before being traded to the Knicks at the deadline. He was never able to get into game-shape, had his minutes limited and missed random games due to swelling in his knees.

FUTURE
McGrady is looking for a starting job on a contender, and said himself that he will retire if his knee will prevent him from being an all-star player. Hasta la vista, T-Mac.

2010 ANALYSIS
Sergio greatly improved his shooting and driving, which will at the very least make him a competent backup going forward. He is still held back by poor defense, and that's unlikely to ever change.

FUTURE
If Sergio doesn't re-sign with the Knicks, a lucrative career in Europe is very likely for him. His defensive flaws won't be nearly as exposed there.

2010 ANALYSIS
Duhon's fall from grace was swift, showing that his 2009 end of season slump was no fluke.

FUTURE
It won't be as a starting PG, that's for damn sure. Duhon is looking at backup PG roles on contenders. Duhon almost signed with the Magic in 2008, and that's as good a bet as any for where he'll end up.

2010 ANALYSIS
Walker broke out when arriving in NY, showing a decent offensive game (athletic dunks and 3pt shooting) that make him a good fit in D'Antoni's offense, but at the same time playing terrible defense that showed why he couldn't crack Boston's rotation. Still, he's a solid young role player on a team that could use more of them.

FUTURE
Walker's contract will likely be guaranteed in August, as at only 800K he is well worth the cost. He should backup Wilson Chandler next season, pending any trades.

2010 ANALYSIS
Barron came from nowhere to become the Knicks' starting center late in the year, and played extremely well - which begs the question - why didn't the Knicks sign a real center sooner? They had an open roster spot and injuries all year, and when they did bring someone in, it was Jonathan Bender who himself was barely healthy enough to play.

FUTURE
Barron may have played himself into an NBA gig. He is at the very least a legit backup center in the league, and while the Knicks were a good fit that catered to his mid-range game, he is hardly a lock to return as he'll surely look for the best available offer. Given the extreme lack of quality centers in 2010 free agency, it would not be inconceivable to see him return as the Knicks starting center.

Giddens showed he had some promise as a defensive specialist, but only if he improves his shooting to a great degree.

FUTURE
Giddens still has SOME promise, but I don't think he'll get much more than training camp invites. He could use some time in the D-League as he's really raw on both ends, but as a 3-year vet he won't be eligible to be sent down if he makes an NBA roster.

House was having a down year in Boston before getting traded for Nate Robinson. It was thought House might get rejuvenated under D'Antoni, but instead he shot the ball abominably and was a total downgrade from Nate Robinson in every imaginable way.

I'm going to guess that House re-signs with the Celtics, who never should have traded him in the first place.

2010 ANALYSIS
The Knicks brought Bender out of retirement to steal any potential minutes from lottery pick Jordan Hill, which is as big of an indictment of Mike D'Antoni as a coach as you'll ever see. As with any former retiree with no knees working himself into game shape, Bender had some decent nights, but they were outweighed by the bad/ineffective nights. He was frequently out of the lineup due to nagging injuries, and only cracked 20 minutes once.

FUTURE
Bender is unlikely to be re-signed by the Knicks, and might be done in the NBA again. As the Grizzlies learned when they signed Darius Miles out of retirement last season, these guys are medically retired for a reason.

ANALYSIS
Curry has played 10 games over the last two seasons and just can't seem to get healthy. He was never been in game-shape over the last two seasons, and few careers have undergone such epic collapses (starter to high-paid zero w/ no major injuries on the right side of 30?).

FUTURE
Curry recently stated he would not accept a buyout of the final season of his contract, which ultimately makes him a very large expiring contract at the 2011 trade deadline. I don't anticipate him being moved before that as his value is practically nil.

Good to see where Curry's heart is at. In his wallet.

Thanks. Think we could the Raps as one of the next teams? :D

Great stuff. I love these articles because sometimes its fun to just edit the adjustments you made myself. Planning on doing any more of these or is it just for your Knicks?

Thanks!

Rashidi said...

I'd actually like to do the Raptors soon, I just need to update Rasho and O'Bryant (as well as revise the rest of the team).

I will be focusing on teams eliminated from playoff contention first (which should be all but 8 of the 30 teams in a few days).

Rashidi said...

I'd like to say I'll do all 30 teams, but I'll probably get bored before I get to a team like the T'Wolves (who I am convinced are the least popular team in the league given the lack of demand at any point in the year).

It's a long summer though, and chances are I will be updating throughout as teams add free agents.

Rashidi said...

You'll be happy to know the Raptors will be my next team. 9/15 players revised so it should be released some time tomorrow.

How about not listening to these guys and just list the teams in order. It'll be more organized and would feel like you are going through each team faster. You pick random teams guys ask for then youll feel pressed for time. Remember youre the one who did the ratings not them.
