Memphis Grizzlies Ratings

EDIT: Added Steven Hunter to the mix, as Denver traded him along with a 1st rounder (in exchange for a 2nd rounder) in order save 7.2 million (Hunter's salary plus the luxury tax).

Additionally, to make up for no update last night, I should be releasing two teams today.

Standing Dunk 50 (down from 75)

Outlook: Memphis' best scorer and rebounder, but just might be their worst defender too. A poor man's Dirk Nowitzki, if you strain your brain thinking about it. Gets more backhanded compliments from me than any player in the league. That the Grizzlies are looking to him for veteran leadership should sum up the state of the franchise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rudy Gay (SF/PF)
Overall 84 (down from 85)

Outlook: Will either have a bounce back year with Randolph taking on the offensive load, or will get pissed about not having as many shots as the year before.

Outlook: Mayo had a solid rookie season, finishing runner up to Rose in ROY voting. Doesn't really have any weaknesses, which bodes well for his future since he's hardly peaked.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Conley (PG)
Overall 81 (down from 82)

Outlook: Conley had a brutal first half, but thrived in the second half under a new coach. One of the more athletic players in the game, he needs to continue increasing his knowledge of the game in order to really take off as a player.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Marc Gasol (C)
Overall 80 (up from 79)

Standing Dunk 75

Outlook: Pau's little brother didn't make anyone forget about his elder, but he didn't embarrass himself either. He has to keep working at his rebounding and defense if he wants to elevate his game.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hasheem Thabeet (C)

Outlook: Already called a bust by many, Thabeet needs to show he belongs on the defensive end. Memphis desperately needs him there with Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol on the front line. Thabeet could even start if Gasol doesn't play well next to Randolph (and after watching Eddy Curry try to play next to him, I'm guessing he won't).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Marko Jaric (SG/SF)
Overall 75

Outlook: Oldest player on the team, and second highest paid too (credit: Kevin McHale). Jack of all trades, master of none - can play all three perimeter positions but sucks at all of them.

Marcus Williams (PG)

Standing Dunk 50

Outlook: Golden State traded a 1st round pick to get Williams just so Don Nelson could discard him like rubbish. Williams looks like he's locked up Memphis backup gig thanks to an excellent summer league. A good passer, and Memphis definitely has a shortage of those.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hamed Haddadi (C)
Overall 75 (up from 70)

Outlook: Led the Olympics in blocks and rebounds playing for the Iranian team. Probably won't be any worse than Darko Milicic was, and he makes about 6 million less annually.

Outlook: Was the worst starting PF in basketball this year. Fortunately, Randolph puts him on the bench where Arthur can hone his skills playing in the second unit.

Outlook: Could be the next Battier/Posey in Memphis. One of the oldest players on the team despite his rookie status.

Outlook: Honestly I'm not too sure where he fits (other than depth) on a team with Zach Randolph and Darrell Arthur. May see most of his time at SF, which isn't exactly advisable.

Steven Hunter (C/PF)
Overall 68 (down from 71)

Outlook: Likely in his last season in the league (expiring contract). Hunter never improved and injuries had him contemplating retirement last season. He's 4th on the center depth chart in Memphis, which should say something.
