How to not use stats properly

A lot of people have been complaining about the shot ratings this year, especially the Close ratings. The best way to descibe close is it's the 4-14 foot range. Inside is the direct vicinity of the basket, mid-range is from the FT line out. Close is that weird inbewteen stage where you'd prefer to get closer to the basket if at all possible, and the region is staunchly guarded which makes it difficult to score there.

Since most players (especially guards) would prefer not to shoot from this range, it is common for players to have few shot attempts from this range. What that creates is a small sample size, and thus the opportunity for stats to be mishandled.

Eddie House has the following shot ratings

Inside 81
Close 50
Medium 86
3pt 87

House has 80s in all his shot ratings but the minimum 50 in his close rating. 2K Sports didn't take player history into account, which is pretty darn important when using a small sample (as it increases the pool of data to get a better idea. Most of you know this by now but I'm just laying out the details for any newcomers.)

Eddie House Close
2009: 9-30 (.300)
2008: 14-34 (.411)
2007: 12-41 (.292)
2006: 13-38 (.342)
2005: 23-43 (.534)
Total: 61-186 (.327)

What we have here is a player with a fluctuating percentage. He's as low as 29% one year and as high as 53% in another. House gets slapped with a 50, which is more due to his low sample size (as it seems 2K gave a 50 to any player with a small sample and a low percentage). Just going by this data we know House does not deserve to have the bare minimum rating of 50. I'm still collecting data for players, but it should be obvious House's numbers are better than say...

J. Jeffries
2009: 1-15 (.066)
2008: 2-12 (.166)

2007: 6-20 (.300)
2006: 7-29 (.241)
2005: 10-35 (.285)
Total: 26-111 (.234)

There's a player much more deserving of a 50.

Let's say House deserves a 55 for arguments sake. That still looks very odd next to an 81 Inside and 86 Medium. So to inspect further, let's take a look at those Inside numbers...

E. House
2009: 17-30 (.567)
2008: 12-35 (.343)
2007: 18-35 (.514)
2006: 30-67 (.448)
2005: 17-42 (.405)
Total: 94-209 (.449)

2K gave House an 81 rating because he went 17-30 over a full season. That's actually pretty pathetic when you think about it. How could they not know what a bad finisher he is? He shot 34% in a similar sample just a year prior, and has only been above 50% two times in five years. That 81 is just two points below...

J. Jeffries
2009: 92-175 (.526)
2008: 83-169 (.491)
2007: 70-126 (.556)
2006: 142-261 (.544)
2005: 171-318 (.537)
Total: 558-1049 (.531)

It should be fairly obvious which of these players is the significantly better finisher. Jeffries had a better year last year than House's last 5 seasons combined. What we see here is House's inside rating doesn't match up with his dreadful close rating.

61 inside
55 close
86 medium
87 3pt

Doesn't that look so much better? His strengths are clearly illustrated now, and we didn't even have to put any thought into it (2K hates doing that). All it took was merely analyzing readily available data.

But then, I guess a company that didn't update any FT ratings between this year and last has no use for somethng like that.

List of the injured players

Yellow (can play through it)
SG Raja Bell: 64 (-7) Sprained Wrist, 4-6 months
SF Joe Alexander: 57 (-6) Strained Hamstring, 8-10 weeks
C Aaron Gray: 53 (-10) Shin Splints, 6-8 weeks
SF Bill Walker: 52 (-7) Sore Knee, 8-10 weeks
PF Darrell Arthur: 60 (-5) Bruised Sternum 4-6 months
SG C.J. Miles: 49 (-8) Broken Finger, 8-10 weeks
C Adonal Foyle: 50 (-7) Sore Knee, 2-4 months
SF Josh Howard: 73 (-4) Sore Wrist, 2-4 weeks
SF Tim Thomas: 52 (-7) Sore Knee, 8-10 weeks
PG Travis Diener: 57 (-4) Sprained Toe, 8-10 weeks
SF Mike Dunleavy: 56 (-9) Sore Knee, 8-10 months
PF Tyler Hansbrough: 58 (-10) Shin Splints, 2-4 months
SG Tracy McGrady: 67 (-10) Sore Knee, 10-12 months
PF Jeff Pendergraph: 59 (-4) Bruised Hip, 2-4 months
PF Antawn Jamison: 65 (-11) Seperated Shoulder, 4-6 weeks

Shouldn't anyone expected to miss months be unplayable? Like Bell and Arthur? Not that any of these guys are playing through their injuries.

Red (Unplayable)
C Jerome James: 39 (-4) Strained Achilles, 12-14 months
PF Leon Powe: 46 (-20) Torn ACL, 10-12 months
SF Kyle Korver: 48 (-13) Bone Spurs, 6-8 weeks
SG Francisco Garcia: 57 (-11) Broken Wrist, 4-6 months
C Yao Ming: 53 (-30), Broken Toe, 12-14 months
C Robin Lopez: 42 (-18), Broken Toe, 6-8 weeks
PF Kevin Love: 61 (-12), Broken Hand, 6-8 weeks
PG Patrick Mills: 46 (-23) Broken Toe, 6-8 months
SF Nicolas Batum: 54 (-10) Torn Labrum, 4-6 months
PF Brandan Wright: 55 (-10) Seperated Shoulder, 4-6 months

Why the hell is Kyle Korver in the Red while Raja Bell is in the Yellow?

Players who SHOULD be injured
PF Glen Davis (Broken Thumb, 2 months)
PF Blake Griffin (Fractured Knee, 6-8 weeks)
SF Matt Harpring (This guy is going to retire due to his injuries!)
C Eddy Curry (Torn whatever, who cares how long)
PG Stephon Marbury (Brain Damage, 10-12 months)
PG Steve Francis (Still recovering, probably retiring)
SF Wally Szczerbiak (Having surgery, probably retiring)

Side note: Bobby Jackson, Tyronn Lue, and Brent Barry join Bruce Bowen on the retired list. If only he'd get around to D-League coach Mark Madsen.

THANK YOU 2K! and OMG WHY 2K?

Finally, something legitmately cool.

I downloaded their roster and they added a feature I've been dying for, for years.

INJURIES!

Go to the Bobcats and check out Raja Bell

Raja Bell (highlighted in Yellow)
64 overall (-7)

Click his player card: Sprained wrist 4-6 months

One problem though: It seems like we can't use this feature for ourselves. Which actually sucks quite a bit, because we're

A. Now at the mercy of an entity that has proven itself incompetent on more than one occasion
B. Unable to add this to our own rosters
C. Unable to remove this if I want to say, GET THE YAO MING ACHIEVEMENT YOU IDIOTS.
D. The injuries apply to the Draft Class or all-star teams and any other teams the players appear on. So you can't even get the Yao achievement picking the all-star team or anything because he is a 53 overall now. Heck, you can't even put him in the game because he's highlighted in Red.
E. You cannot release or trade a player on the disabled list. That includes in our managed rosters. High five for putting association resrictions on NOT ASSOCIATION MODE! Some of us actually like to play without injured players!

FILE DETAILS
Opening night rosters and rotations for all 30 teams. Player edits for over 100 players. Added the Nuggets to the list of completed teams (spent most of this update editing players across the league rather than focusing on a few teams). Lowered the ratings of many free agents.

One correction! Timberwolves starting rotation should be Flynn-Brewer-Wilkins-Gomes-Jefferson. I have Flynn-Brewer-Gomes-Jefferson-Hollins. News of this came right after I submitted the update.

Wait a sec, tonight's opening night?

LOL I had no idea... I thought it was tomorrow because that's when my brother told me the Knicks season opener is. I'm pissed I missed Celtics vs Cavs.

Looks like my roster is gonna come a day earlier than I thought. Look for it tonight.

EDIT: File is ready to go, but typically, the 2K servers are down. On opening night. Somebody REALLY needs to write all this stuff down and keep a record of it somewhere.

2K's Professionalism (or lack thereof)

http://www.2ksports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243301

My personal take is 2K shouldn't be saying a damn thing when they've shipped an unfinished product two years in a row, and have quite a few features that many are displeased with (such as LIVING ROSTERS). The naysayers will say I'm just piling on and I have an agenda to push. But you know what?

Actions speak louder than words.

Ronnie Singh and the rest of 2K Sports should cut the crap, put their money where their mouth is, and let the product do the talking.

If 2K could put out a quality roster, I wouldn't feel the urge to keep a blog that seemingly detracts from their efforts, and I'd probably cease roster editing because there wouldn't be a need. But the reality is this is a company that kept Tony Battie rated 50 close & mid for 7 years, and a company that hasn't changed Gilbert Arenas' durability despite two years of well documented injuries. They don't "get" the little things and that's why the community is starting to turn on them.

Top 20 PGs - Rashidi vs 2K

77 – Kirk Hinrich (0)
76 – Jose Calderon (+1)
76 – T.J. Ford (+1)
76 – Rafer Alston (+1)
75 – Raymond Felton (0)

I should note that I haven't edited the following 74 rated PGs: Rodney Stuckey, Michael Conley, Jonny Flynn, and Mario Chalmers. Stuckey is the only one with a realistic chance of making the top 20 (75 rated Felton is #21 on both lists).

The player most likely to drop off the list is Rafer Alston (obviously). He had a bit of a resurgance when he went to Orlando, and will be a backup in New Jersey if Harris is healthy.

Oh and before I forget, I changed Nate Robinson and Monta Ellis to SGs which is why they don't appear on the list. 2K had them rated 78 and 76 at PG respectively.

Let's see how mine break down by conference (and figure out who the all-stars are).

West
95 – Chris Paul (+1)
89 – Deron Williams (0)
85 – Tony Parker (+1)
84 – Chauncey Billups (-1)
82 – Baron Davis (0)
80 – Steve Nash (0)
80 – Jason Kidd (-1)
77 – Andre Miller (-1)
77 - Russell Westbrook (0)

Paul, Deron, and Parker are my all-star picks, with Billups as a possible 4th.

I don't think Nash's Suns will win enough games so the only way he makes it is if he gets voted in.

Andre Miller off the bench, really Nate?

East
85 – Devin Harris (-1)
84 – Rajon Rondo (-2)
81 – Gilbert Arenas (-3)
80 – Jameer Nelson (+1)
78 – Mo Williams (+1)
78 – Derrick Rose (-2)
77 – Mike Bibby (-1)
77 – Kirk Hinrich (0)
76 – Jose Calderon (+1)
76 – T.J. Ford (+1)
76 – Rafer Alston (+1)
75 – Raymond Felton (0)

It should be clear the best PGs in the league play in the west. Harris wouldn't even be an all-star in the west, and is a bigger injury risk than the rest of the top PGs to boot.

Rondo has grown so much he could make the all-star team in this weak group, though it'd mean he'd be the 4th Celtic making the team. Of course, considering the Pistons took 4 all-stars the year after they won the title, it's possible if the Celtics are in 1st when the break comes along.

Gilbert Arenas missed the last two season with injury (2009 all-stars Nelson and Williams are in his debt). He could return if the Wizards are a playoff team, though he'll need to keep the aforementioned players off his back to do it.

Of course, Derrick Rose could throw a wrench into all of that, if he continues to improve, and could conceivably be as high as 3rd on the conference list by the all-star break (and a decent shot at being the top east PG)

Players to watch (based on preseason)

Gilbert Arenas
Obviously we all will have our eyes on Agent Zero in his comeback from multiple injuries that have robbed the last two years from him. What we may see is a player more focused on distributing than scoring, which plays against his former strengths. He should also be considerably less aggressive and athletic to avoid further injuries.

Arenas Preseason Stats
14.7 ppg
1.3 rpg (0.0 offensive)
6.5 apg
0.8 spg
0.3 bpg
4.0 tpg
.482 FG%
.375 3PT%
.684 FT%
24.8 mpg

Arenas rebound and steal numbers are way down, and they may not be coming back. His assists are up, but this is dampened by his turnover rate (4 turnovers in 25 mpg?). On the bright side, his shooting percentages are spot on, and they'll need to be since leading scorer Antawn Jamison will miss at least the first month of the season.

Mike Bibby
Bibby averaged only 6.0 ppg and 2.6 apg during preseason (19 mpg). He started last season hot before cooling down after the all-star break, so it looks like a slight decline could be in order.

Omri Casspi
51 rated rookie averaged 11.7 ppg during preseason and could easily be the starting SF in Sacramento. His competition is 32 year old Desmond Mason. I wish I were making this up.

DeJuan Blair
You all know the deal - Blair had a monster preseason and made all the teams that passed him up look foolish. 13.9 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.8 spg, .579 FG% and did all this in only 17.9 mpg. The regular season is another story but it will be very interesting to see the transition.

Manu Ginobili
The 83 rated star averaged only 6 points off the bench on 30% shooting. He could fall quickly, though he did chip in 3 assists and a steal in only 19 mpg.

Tayshaun Prince
Averaged only 4 points (25% shooting!) and 2 boards in preseason, as he struggled to fit into the uptempo offense.

Greg Oden
Led the Blazers in points, rebounds, and blocks. Joel Przybilla is supposedly going to start over him, but hopefully Oden's play makes it impossible for Nate McMillan to keep him out of the starting lineup.

Andrew Bynum
Averaged 20 points in the absence of Pau Gasol. Lakers would just be happy if he stayed healthy, but an improved Bynum to boot would seem to put the championship in the bank.

Derek Fisher
Was thoroughly outplayed by Jordan Farmar this preseason, and is 35 years old. Will he (finally) be relegated to bench duty?

Anthony Morrow
22 points per game. 58% from the field. 52% from the 3pt arc. 96% from the line. Anthony Morrow did this. Anthony Morrow is only 60 overall and the 2K Insider doesn't even have him on the Warriors active roster.

Ersan Ilyasova
Averaged 10 points, 3 boards, and shot 48% on threes (13-27). Could start at either SF or PF, and he's only 55 overall.

Chris Douglas-Roberts
Averaged 18 points, 4 boards, and 2 assists (albeit in 34 mins). At the very least the Nets won't miss Vince Carter nearly as much as the analysts think.

Marcus Thornton
Outplayed Morris Peterson and Devin Brown, which means he could start at SG before long. I wonder how much Chris Paul misses Rasual Butler?

Derek Fisher: Rated like it's 1999.

Thank you 2K Insider for continuing to ruin player ratings by listening to homers rather than actual analysis/data.

On-Ball Defense
91 Kobe
90 Artest
87 Fisher (+7 boost)
70 Vujacic
69 Brown
63 Walton
60 Farmar
58 Odom
46 Gasol
45 Powell
40 Morrison
36 Bynum
36 Mbenga

Derek Fisher is 35 years old, no longer a better defender than Sasha Vujacic or even Shannon Brown. He is now rated 4 points behind Rajon Rondo, 4 points ahead of Trevor Ariza, and 14!!! points ahead of Chris Paul.

DRTG (pts allowed per 100 possessions) of all Lakers with 1000+ mins
Odom 102
Ariza 102
Bynum 104
Vujacic 104
Gasol 105
Kobe 106
Farmar 106
Walton 107
Fisher 108

Fisher was dead last on the team. Let's check out the playoff numbers..

Odom 101 (+1)
Gasol 102 (+3)
Ariza 103 (-1)
Bynum 103 (+1)
Kobe 104 (+2)
Walton 104 (+3)
Vujacic 104
Farmar 106
Brown 107
Fisher 108

It's surely notable that the rest of the starting 5 stepped it up, while Fisher remained the worst on the team.

So why the boost to his defense? It's ludicrous. Were the Lakers REALLY not good enough defensively? What PG hasn't lit Fisher up? TROY HUDSON torched Fisher en route to a 30 million dollar contract, and that was six years ago! They think he's better now that he' slowing due to age?

The best part is we get no explanation at all or even a notification of the change from the 2K "Insider".

Jerryd Bayless: Man, Myth, mostly Myth

Hey kids, you too can get your favorite player boosted really high! Just beg the 2K Insider, beg beg beg, and he will give you what you ask for. Bombard his blog with stuff about your favorite players! Tell him Shaun Livingston has a load of potential and is a great player. Get 50 of your friends to do it. Wait for the next roster update. This is pretty much the methodology 2K is using right now.

Today's article is about Jerryd Bayless, whom I noticed jumped 2 overall points (despite being overrated to begin with).

Bayless posted TERRIBLE shooting numbers in his rookie season.
69-189 (.365) from the field
9-41 (.219) from mid-range
7-27 (.259) from three

During preseason Bayless has shot .400 from the field and missed all seven of his 3pt attempts. It's just preseason, but where is the improvement?

Additionally, his A/T ratio is terrible and it looks like he may never "get it" as a point guard.

So that the Insider gave Bayless a 2 point boost was curious to me, considering I gave him a 1 pt deduction (marking a 3 pt difference between us).

Here's a list of Bayless' changes by the 2K Insider
Overall +2
Close +2
Medium +21
FT -3

Unbelievable. Bayless shot 9-41 from mid-range yet he gets boosted from 51 to 72. Much maligned Rajon Rondo shot 51-117 (.435) yet was bounced to a 66 mid.

Allow me to do the 2K Insider's job for him

2K Sports released another roster update, but once again did not detail it's contents. Here's what I've uncovered by grazing over it.

Patrick Mills: If you haven't heard, the latest on the injured second round pick is that he's better than Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless. I tell ya, the more I see from the 2K Insider the more I am convinced he is Isiah Thomas because there is nobody else who is record breakingly bad at evaluating players. 2K Sports talking about the 2K Insider as a quality feature is equivalent to Isiah talking playoffs.

Ime Udoka: In case you haven't heard, Ime Udoka made the team! Except he didn't (for refernece, see Patrick Mills). Would someone let the Insider know Dante Cunningham is a living, breathing, occasionally existing person? I'm banned from posting on his blog, if you didn't know. Apparently he didn't take it very well when I sarcastically brought "oversights" like these to his attention.

The end of Bruce Bowen: Bowen was removed from 2K. Now if only the Insider would get to the countless other retired players and/or international players that haven't played in the NBA in years and aren't coming back.

Three Point Ratings: If anyone bitched about a 3pt rating it was likely adjusted. Jared Jeffries got +7 for his preseason showing (too low IMO). Players with 90+ 3pt were reduced and brought back to normal. Even Garnett saw a 3 point deduction for w/e reason (which is the sole cause of his 1 point overall drop, mind you).

No more 99 Clutch Ratings: All 99's were transformed into 90s. Which doesn't exactly make mathematical sense given the 25, 60, and 90 ranges (wouldn't you want to drop the 60 too since it's no longer the mid point?)

Rajon Rondo vs Joe Johnson: Rondo his mid-range rating dropped dramatically, thanks to the clamoring of fans who think the guy can't stick a 15 foot jump shot. We consider Rondo a bad shooter because he can't hit threes! Jason Kidd is still running around with a 74 mid-range and 84 3pt and he can't shoot either... JJ on the other hand was given an 82 mid-range even though he is SIGNIFICANTLY worse at it than teammates Mike Bibby & Jamal Crawford (85). Johnson only shoots 36% from mid-range and is not even a volume shooter from the zone.

The 66 mid-range club
Lou Williams: 60-178 (.337)
Rajon Rondo: 51-117 (.435)
Matt Harpring: 23-80 (.287)
Yao Ming: 17-45 (.377)
Dan Gadzuric: 15-41 (.365)

Guess which player doesn't belong?

The 82 mid-range club
Raja Bell: 125-285 (.438)
Kevin Garnett: 123-279 (.440)
Joe Johnson: 110-299 (.367)
Jarrett Jack: 94-203 (.463)
Tim Duncan: 82-188 (.436)
Glen Davis: 75-182 (.412)
Grant Hill: 73-154 (.474)
Nene: 54-119 (.453)

Guess which player doesn't belong?

Blake Griffin: +21 dunk and +12 vertical = working towards making the Clips cheesy enough to play online! That would be a welcome sight though, as I consider myself blessed anytime my opponent doesn't pick Lakers/Rockets/Cavs.

Brian Cook: Dear 2K Insider, why do you hate me so? I have been in this league for six years, and yet it's three roster updates already and you still can't find it in your heart to put me in the game? Even while Brent Barry worked for NBA TV all through training camp and Pops Mensah Bonsu is operating on an unguaranteed contract? Oh the hypocrisy!

PF Dirk Nowitzki
C Emeka Okafor (1st)

The rookies actually smashed the sophmores 77-63, which is probably proof enough that the rookies are vastly overrated. Blake Griffin had 4 pts and 23 rebounds.

Awards
MVP: LeBron James (30.7 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 8.0 apg, 2.2 spg, 1.5 bpg, 49 FG%, 75 FT%, 37 3PT%)

COY: Nate McMillan (54-28, 4th in power rankings w/ 78 overall team)

Interestingly enough when I go to Awards in the History section, it lists Dwight Howard as the 2010 DPOY not Josh Smith.

PLAYOFF TIME!

First Round
Western Conference
1. Spurs (4)
8. Lakers (2)

4. Clippers (1)
5. Mavericks (4)

3. Nuggets (4)
6. Warriors (1)

2. Blazers (3)
7. Jazz (4)

Lakers as the 8th seed? 2K's sim engine never ceases to amaze me.

Eastern Conference
1. Celtics (4)
8. Heat (0)

4. Hawks (4)
5. Wizards (3)

3. Magic (4)
6. Bobcats (0)

2. Cavaliers (4)
7. Knicks (0)

At least they got it right in the east, where the top four teams all advance, and the top three all do it via sweep.

Second Round
1. Spurs (4)
5. Mavericks (2)

3. Nuggets (1)
7. Jazz (4)

1. Celtics (4)
4. Hawks (3)

3. Magic (4)
2. Cavaliers (1)

Pretty predictable second round, for the east, wouldn't you say? Where have we seen those results before...

Conference Finals
1. Spurs (4)
7. Jazz (3)

1. Celtics (2)
3. Magic (4)

For what it's worth, Rajon Rondo got hurt in game 4 and missed the rest of the series. Orlando returns to the NBA Finals.

NBA Finals
1. Spurs (2)
3. Magic (4)

Dwight Howard was predictably Finals MVP (21.5 ppg, 12.7 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.9 spg, 3.0 bpg).

Retirements: Lindsey Hunter, Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Finley, Theo Ratliff, Kevin Ollie, Mark Blount. That's actually pretty realistic though you can quibble about Shaq if you want. Let's take a look at his player profile.

Morale: around 30, resulting in an overall decrease of -4 which put him at 75 (default is 81 which means he naturally declined 2 pts as well throughout the year)
Agent: Basically he wanted a trade due to PT
Contract: I don't think I can go through the physical grind of another season. This will be my final season in the NBA.

Lindsey was the unhappiest (0 morale and -10 overall), Finley, Ollie, and Blount were all very happy (100 morale), Ratliff was about 50 morale and thought his role would be bigger.

Coach retirements: Mike Dunleavy and Rick Adelman. Still completely unrealistic as coaches shouldn't retire until they've hit 30 years in the league, or if they have guaranteed contracts.

And at this point my game freezes. Awesome 2k. Awesome.

Downloading Player DNA

These CAPs are high quality and I will be downloading them for my roster until 2K gets around to actually adding the players. Please rate them 5 stars to ensure they appear on 2K's DL list (at least until they all get added to the official roster).

Neon1 2k10 - Carlos Arroyo
And1pr0duct - Rodrigue Beaubois, Marcus Haislip, Lester Hudson, Wesley Matthews, Serge Ibaka, Dante Cunningham, Trey Gilder, Deron Washington, Brian Cook, Goran Suton

Player, Rating, Position, and Team
Cunningham: 65 (PF/SF) Add to Portland
Matthews: 65 (SG) Add to Utah
Hudson: 64 (PG/SG) Add to Boston
Haislip: 64 (PF/SF) Add to San Antonio
Ibaka: 63 (PF) Add to Oklahoma City
Arroyo: 61 (PG) Add to Miami
Gilder: 61 (SF/PF) Kept in FA (not guaranteed to make roster)
Beaubois: 60 (PG) Add to Dallas, release Shawne Williams
Washington: 59 Kept in FA (not guaranteed to make roster)
Suton: 58 (PF/C) Kept in FA (not guaranteed to make roster)
Cook: 58 (PF) - Add to Houston, release Brent Barry

Very annoyingly, 2K took out the feature where you could surf their database for specific content, which makes it all the more important that these get highly rated (On that note... *coughs in general direction of my roster file*) I was looking through "Top Rated" and couldn't find some of them until I gave poor ratings to a few other files. It shouldn't have to be like that, but this is the slapjob we've been given.

This is a terrible oversight by 2K as we are getting bombared with an oversaturation of crappy Michael Jordan CAPs and are finding few add players we actually want to see in the game.

Fixed my internet connection

That certainly delayed things tonight. In the meantime I played a quick game which I'll break down. I was the Lakers against the Celtics on all-star difficulty (12 min qtrs). Figured I should bang out some achievements (win Lakers/Celtics on all-star, and score 50 with Kobe. I also ended up with the All-Heart achievement which I actually hadn't gotten since 2K7 I believe.

Lakers (Me)
144 pts
64-94 FG (68%)
5-15 3PT (33%)
11-15 FT (73%)
48 assists (11 turnovers)
10 fouls
31 rebounds (4 offensive)
8 steals
4 blocks (just missed the 5 steals and blocks achievement yet again)
100 points in paint
22 bench points
8 second chance points
12 fast break points

Celtics (CPU)
138 pts
63-104 FG (60%)
3-14 3PT (21%)
9-12 FT (75%)
48 assists (10 turnovers)
11 fouls
41 rebounds (12 offensive)
11 steals
0 blocks
76 points in paint
20 bench points
14 second chance points

Lakers Boxscore
Kobe: 56 pts (24-33 FG, 1-1 3pt, 7-8 FT), 2 reb, 10 ast, 4 TO (43 mins)

Points didn't always come easy, most of them were probably on the break. I took advantage of Eddie House when they subbed him in at SG.

Gasol: 37 pts (18-20 FG, 1-1 FT), 8 reb, 5 ast, 0 TO (41 mins)

Gasol was just too easy to score with. He is very easy to standing dunk with and blew by Perkins and Rasheed at will. When the CPU started to double Kobe it made it even easier, plus Odom's post passing helped quite a few times.

Gasol's scoring breakdown
Q1 (11:11) Dunk
Q2 (9:56) Dunk
Q2 (9:14) Layup
Q2 (6:43) Layup
Q2 (2:52) Dunk (And 1)
Q2 (2:52) Made FT
Q2 (1:26) Layup
Q3 (11:49) Dunk
Q3 (10:01) Jumpshot (actually, this was a two foot hookshot)
Q3 (8:55) Dunk
Q3 (7:39) Dunk
Q3 (7:16) Layup
Q3 (5:21) Dunk
Q3 (4:59) Layup
Q3 (4:08) Layup
Q3 (3:09) Dunk
Q4 (1:57) Layup
Q4 (1:37) Jumpshot (actually, this was a putback dunk)
Q4 (47.6) Layup

Gasol by qtr
Q1: 2 pts
Q2: 11 pts
Q3: 18 pts
Q4: 6 pts

I was able to get him on fire by the end of the 2nd qtr and then just went to town with him in the 3rd. I don't know what's more maddening, that I shot 90% with Gasol rather efortlessly, or that they didn't bother to put a body on him (only 1 FTA and 0 TOs despite all the interior play against the toughest defense in the league)

Getting back to the box score...

Bynum: 17 pts (8-9 FG, 1-4 FT), 5 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk (22 mins)

Yet another player who was unstoppable inside when he got the ball. 17 pts in only 22 mins of action. Would have had more if I'd figured out his FT animation. Single-handedly got Sheed in foul trouble for the whole first half.

Fisher: 10 pts (4-8 FG, 2-5 3pt) 1 reb, 7 ast, 1 stl (30 mins)
Walton: 8 pts (4-5 FG), 1 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk (12 mins)

For some reason I had a much easier time scoring with Walton than I did with Artest.

Odom: 6 pts (2-2 FG, 2-2 FT), 12 reb, 9 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk (34 mins)

Odom led me in +/- with 20 which isn't tough to see why given the efficient all-around box score. Could have easily triple doubled if I wanted.

Vujacic: 6 pts (2-5 FG, 2-3 3PT), 1 stl, 1 blk (9 mins)
Farmar: 2 pts (1-5 FG, 0-3 3PT), 7 ast, 1 stl, 3 TO (19 mins)
Artest: 2 pts (1-7 FG, 0-3 3PT), 2 reb, 6 ast, 1 stl, 2 TO (34 mins)
Morrison, Powell, Brown: DNP

Celtics Box
Allen: 36 pts (16-23 FG, 3-7 3PT, 1-1 FT), 5 reb, 9 ast, 2 stl (40 mins)
Pierce: 29 pts, (13-22 FG, 0-2 3PT, 3-4 FT), 2 reb, 7 ast (38 mins)

Pierce plays too much like LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony. He posts up far more than he shoots threes, and if you foul him it's automatically an And-1.

Garnett: 22 pts (10-15 FG, 2-2 FT), 13 reb, 6 ast, 1 stl (34 mins)

Garnett had three highlight reel dunks, which is probably two too many for a game. He did the rest of his damage from mid-range.

Rondo: 15 pts (7-16 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-3 FT), 1 reb, 16 ast, 1 stl, 4 TO (42 mins)

Held the ball way too much, as is the case with all CPU controlled PGs. Rondo fell apart in the 4th as he turned the ball over a couple times and got blocked by the likes of Walton and Vujacic to start fastbreaks that sparked my come from behind victory.

House: 13 pt (6-13 FG, 0-3 3PT, 1-1 FT), 1 reb, 3 ast (19 mins)
Perkins: 13 pts (6-8 FG, 1-1 FT), 8 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl (36 mins)
Sheed: 10 pts (5-6 FG), 8 reb, 1 ast, 2 TO (22 mins)
Daniels: 0 pts (0-1 FG), 3 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl (14 mins)
Scalabrine, Williams, Allen, Davis: DNP

There is hardly any defense in this game which is a problem. One can only hope this gets fixed sooner rather than later.

New roster coming tonight

I'll be posting my 3rd roster update when I get home from work tonight. Lakers, Celtics, Knicks & Blazers updated along with various other players, updated positions/contracts, etc.

75 reasons why the 2K Insider is a joke

Solomon Jones: 75 3pt

36 reasons why this is the worst 2k rating I have ever seen.

Shawn Marion: 36 3pt

Seriously, this is the best roster maker they could come up with? Even an 8 year old could figure out what's wrong with those ratings.

I'm seriously beginning to question whether or not Isiah Thomas has a part time job that we don't know about.

Updated Team Ratings

EAST OVERALL (Rashidi)
88 Celtics
86 Cavaliers (+1)
84 Magic
80 Hawks
78 Wizards
77 Sixers (-1)
76 Heat (-1)
76 Pistons (-2) (Kwame Brown starting)
75 Knicks (-1)
73 Bulls (-1)
73 Raptors
73 Pacers (+1)
72 Bobcats (-1)
72 Nets (+1)
69 Bucks (+1)

Expect a lot of shuffling in this competitive conference.

WEST OVERALL
88 Lakers
84 Nuggets
83 Mavericks
81 Spurs (+1)
81 Jazz (+2)
(Miles injured, Kirilenko promoted)
81 Grizzlies
80 Hornets (+1)
79 Blazers
79 Warriors
76 Thunder
75 Clippers (-1)
75 Rockets (-6) (No T-Mac or Yao)
74 Suns
73 Wolves
63 Kings (-3) (Garcia injured... looking like another year with the worst record)

2K has the Rockets and Grizzlies as the 4th and 5th best teams in the west. I've got them at 12th and 6th respectively. Grizzlies will surely take a hit when I get to their overrated players.

Review of 2K's first roster update

They're as sloppy and half-assed as I expected.

Sixers: Rodney Carney added
Bobcats: Flip Murray added. I think Derrick Brown dropped an overall point too, LOL
Cavs: Leon Powe (injured til at least the all-star break) on the active roster. LOL.
Grizzlies: Allen Iverson added. Missing Marcus Williams for whatever reason.
Kings: Jon Brockman (57 PF) added to the game
Knicks: Sun Yue added. Even though he was waived. And if that's the case why not add Gabe Pruitt too?

Side note: My Cuttino Mobley is in the file which means roster files and created players are treated seperately. Which will prevent us from having to re-create after every 2k update.

Nuggets: James White returns (52 SG)! Joey Graham still in the FA pool though.

Pacers: A.J. Price added to the game (54 PG). Missing Luther Head for whatever reason.

Blazers: Jeff Pendergraph (69 PF WUT???) added to the game. Dante Cunningham still missing for whatever reason. Juwan Howard signed at least.

Free Agents. Ha-Seung Jin still in the game despite a 4 year absence, which is more than we can say for Houston's 6 year vet Brian Cook.

2010 Association simulation

Honestly it seems like more of the same from 2K9 just with improved presentation, but let's run one anyway. I'll pick the Knicks and see if I can sign LeBron

AWARDS
MVP: Tim Duncan
ROY: James Harden
6TH: Ramon Sessions
DPY: Ben Wallace
MIP: Ben Wallace

COY: Gregg Popovich

Oy on the Ben Wallace part (at least I know whose ratings to butcher in my next update). And nice to see MVP going to someone not named LeBron/Kobe/Wade.

ALL-NBA TEAMS
PG: Harris, Rondo, Deron
SG: Wade, Kobe, Roy
SF: LeBron, Granger, Durant
PF: Duncan, Bosh, Jefferson
C: Howard, Yao, Lopez

Rondo > Paul? As if this game could fail any harder.

ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAMS
PG: Kidd, Rondo
SG: Wade, Ginobili
SF: G. Wallace, LeBron
PF: B. Wallace, Jefferson
C: Howard, Horford

Yeah, when Big Ben is DPOY over Howard you've got a ratings problem.

ALL-ROOKIE TEAMS
PG: Flynn, Lawson
SG: Harden, T. Williams
SF: Clark, D. Brown
PF: Griffin, Hansbrough
C: Hill, Andersen

There are only like four rookie centers in the game so the list should be the same over and over (I changed Hill to a C btw)

LEAGUE LEADERS
Points
Kobe 30.4
LeBron 30.4
Wade 29.5
Durant 27.4
Dirk 27.0
Bosh 26.7

The funny thing is this LOOKS accurate, but it's not. The "did not qualify" glitch still exists and most of the leaders didn't qualify. The "real" scoring leaders?

Kevin Martin 32.1
Kobe Bryant 30.4
LeBron James 30.4
Danny Granger 30.2
Devin Harris 30.2
Carmelo Anthony 29.6
Dwyane Wade 29.5
Kevin Durant 27.4
Dirk Nowitzki 27.0
Michael Redd 26.7

Five players with 30+ ppg? *Sigh*. Moving along...

Rebounds
Bosh 16.0
Duncan 13.3
Howard 13.3
Lee 11.9
Murphy 10.9
Gasol 10.2

Uh...

Assists
Rondo 11.7 (predictable)
Kidd 10.0
Duhon 9.7
Nash 9.4
Billups 9.0
Parker 8.4

Paul finished 7th with 8.2. Kay.

Steals
Paul 3.3
Wade 2.9
Ariza 2.7
Wallace 2.5
Rondo 2.5
Kidd 2.4

Blocks
Howard 3.4
Lopez 2.8
Duncan 2.6
Tyrus Thomas 2.4
Dalembert 2.4
Yao 2.2

FG%
Shaq .607
Howard .604
Amare .549
Bogut .543
Gasol .540
Okafor .539

3pt%
Cook .545
Carney .534
Dooling .511
E. Gordon .496
Barnes .496
Bargnani .492

3PM
Granger 308 (all-time record I believe)
Martin 299
Redd 285
Harrington 270
Terry 266
Billups 230
Artest 224 (LOL)

Getting away from ridiculous statistics and getting to the ridiculous playoff brackets

WESTERN CONFERENCE

1. Spurs (4)
8. Wolves (2)

4. Hornets (2)
5. Jazz (4)

3. Blazers (2)
6. Nuggets (4)

2. Lakers (1)
7. Warriors (4)

EASTERN CONFERENCE
1. Celtics (1)
8. Nets (4)

4. Pistons (4)
5. Wiards (0)

3. Hawks (4)
6. Heat (0)

2. Magic (2)
7. Pacers (4)

Congratulations if you noticed the Cavaliers missed the playoffs! None of the leagues top four teams in 2009 advance beyond round 1. And this should really entice LeBron to leave the Cavs if he has championship aspirations!

ROUND TWO

1. Spurs (4)
5. Jazz (3)

6. Nuggets (4)
7. Warriors (1)

8. Nets (3)
4. Pistons (4)

3. Hawks (4)

CONFERENCE FINALS
1. Spurs (4)
6. Nuggets (2)

4. Pistons (1)
3. Hawks (4)

NBA FINALS
1. Spurs (4)
3. Hawks (2)

You could have predicted that after seeing Duncan and Popovich win their respective awards. Wonder if that'll be a trend.

Moving to the offseason....

COACH RETIREMENTS
Mike Dunleavy
Jerry Sloan
George Karl
Rick Adelman

Oh joy! Another year the game decides to retire these talented rich millionaires who aren't giving up their jobs for a long time! Well, at least the three not named Dunleavy.

Anyway lets cut to the chase and get to the much hyped 2010 free agent class.

86 Carlos Boozer
80 Shaquille O'Neal
79 David Lee
77 Rip Hamilton
76 Raymond Felton
76 Josh Howard
75 Jermaine O'Neal
74 Rafer Alston
73 Luis Scola
72 Steve Blake
72 Zydrunas Ilgauskas
71 Tyrus Thomas

That's right, LeBron missed the playoffs AND he doesn't even make it to free agency and instead re-signs for 6 years. I settle for Carlos Boozer snd re-signing David Lee. Meh I'm going to bed. Just as bad as 2K9 with stats too high instead of too low.

Breaking news: 2K Sports are ungrateful bastards

Retouching on the James White subject, I just realized he did the motion capturing for all these new signature moves 2K added to the game.

So how do they repay the man they call Flight? BY REMOVING HIM FROM THE GAME. This situation just gets sadder with every passing moment. And yes, I'm going to harp on this until they rectify it. I wonder how White feels about this.

James White: OHHHHHHH YOU GOTTA SEE THESE MOVES I GOT IN 2K!
Joey Graham: Oh yeah? Let's go, winner gets to backup Renaldo Balkman all season.
James White: Why aren't I on the Rockets or in the free agent pool?
Joey Graham: I guess I win the roster spot by default then :)
James White: WHAT THE **** they even have LYNN GREER and VASELINE SPANOULIS and they haven't even been in the league in 3 years!
Joey Graham: Why don't you pick my brother? He's in the FA pool.
James White: HA-SEUNG JIN!? Hasn't played in 4 years and even he gets to be in the game? I ****ing motion captured!!!!!!!
Joey Graham: Hey it's okay, if it means that much to you, I hear you're in Live 10.

Breaking news: Two Rockets missing from 2K10

Originally I had thought only James White was missing from 2K10 due to the Rockets having too many contracts. It's just occurred to me that Brian Cook is also missing from 2K10, despite having a guaranteed contract worth 3 million dollars, and having been in the league (and the game) for SIX YEARS.

Last year Gabe Pruitt was removed from the game due to the Darius Miles signing, which was SEMI-excusable on paper because he was a fringe player on a deep championship team.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Jermaine Taylor, and Chase Budinger are all working off non-guaranteed contracts. Why put them on the roster over Cook? Why not just put one of them in the free agent pool? What the hell is so difficult about that???

Hell, David Andersen hasn't even played an NBA game yet, what is he doing in the game instead of Cook? While I'm not complaining about his addition, 2K did not feel the need to add Marcus Haislip to the Spurs roster... so why add a player that is going to cost an established veteran his roster (and apparently game) spot?

Rashidi's Real 2K Insider 1.0

The file is uploading to 2K Share as I type this (upload times seem to be much slower this year).

As covered in the previous post, I updated the rosters/rotations of all teams, updated the Knicks ratings/contracts, and touched up a few other players as I went along. I don't have too many edits yet because I spent a lot of time comparing and contrasting this years ratings with last years looking for similarities.

I will probably post another update tomorrow as I continue to update. I am booked for the weekend and thus implore my readers to post as many suggestions or questionable ratings as they can.

Also, big kudos to the 2K Insider for deleting James White as he did Gabe Pruitt in 2K9. White was the 16th contract on the Rockets, and rather than release him to the free agent pool, 2K decided to delete him entirely. White was later traded to the Nuggets, who actually have roster space, so we now have to actually create a player who was in last year's game for basically no good reason. Big ups to 2K Sports for wasting our time and not learning from last year's mistake (Deleting Pruitt w/ guaranteed contract in favor Darius Miles' unguaranteed contract that was predictably waived).

File uploaded. Gimme them achievement points.

Roster when I wake up...

I worked into the early morning and will post my roster when I wake up. I fixed the team rosters/rotations, changed a few positions for various players, and edited the ratings of all the NY Knicks, which was a bit more time consuming than I would have liked. I think I have a better idea than most regarding 2K's rating scale changes... it's worth noting that not all ratings are 25-99 either. Inside Shot is 60-99 while Close Shot is 50-99.

NEW YORK KNICKS
81 – Nate Robinson (SG/PG)
78 – David Lee (PF/C)
74 - Al Harrington (PF/SF)
73 – Wilson Chandler (SF/SG)
73 - Larry Hughes (SG/SF)
70 – Chris Duhon (PG)
66 – Eddy Curry (C)
66 – Toney Douglas (PG/SG)
65 – Jared Jeffries (PF/C)
64 – Darko Milicic (C)
62 – Jordan Hill (C/PF)
60 – Danilo Gallinari (SF)
52 - Cuttino Mobley (SG) (RETIRED)
TRAINING CAMP
62 – Gabe Pruitt (PG/SG)
51 – Sun Yue (SG/SF)

RATING CHANGES
Robinson +3 (due mainly to position switch)
Lee +1
Harrington -1
Chandler 0
Hughes 0
Duhon -2
Curry +1
Douglas +1
Jeffries +2
Milicic +5
Gallinari +4
Hill 0
Mobley (CAP)
Pruitt -1
Yue +1 (due mainly to position switch... he actually dropped 4 pts)

POSITION CHANGES
Robinson: SG/PG from PG/SG
Milicic: C from C/PF
Hill: C/PF from PF/C
Pruitt: PG/SG from PG
Yue: SG/SF from PG/SG

I'll go into greater detail about what ratings I changed later, right now I need some sleep.

2K10 Gameplay Stats

I played a game on all-star (10 min qtrs). I was Blazers and faced my updated Knicks team.

I recorded the following "achievements" in my first game.

30+ assists
25 points and 6 assists with Brandon Roy
20 fastbreak points
70 points in the paint
60 FG%

When will 2K learn these lofty statistical goals aren't achievements, they are attained through a normal playthrough?

Also, Yao Ming is out for the year and has an achivement (20 pts, 10 reb, 3 blks), while 2K9 coverboy Kevin Garnett has no achievement. How the mighty have fallen?

Anyway, here's the stats from this game I played.

Blazers 108
51-77 FG (66%)
2-8 3PT (25%)
4-6 FT (66%)
44 assists
12 turnovers
1 foul
30 rebounds (3 off)
10 steals
4 blocks
84 points in paint
29 bench points
6 second chance points
20 fast break points

As if we needed anymore confirmation, scoring in the paint is just too damn easy in this game - especially now that alley oop physics were fixed.

Knicks 95
43-85 FG (50%) (is it me, or does 2K10 not know math?)
9-30 3PT (30%)
0-0 FT
36 assists
13 turnovers
4 fouls
31 rebounds (9 off)
8 steals
3 blocks
42 points in paint
27 bench points
8 second chance points
12 fast break points

The Knicks took 30 threes and zero FTs. They did their best job of launching shots before any physical defense could be played (or to be more precise, any physical offense). Semi-realistic flow but the Knicks do have players who drive and get to the line (Nate, Lee, Harrington).

Blazers Box Score
Roy: 35 pts (17-27 FG, 0-2 3PT, 1-1 FT), 2 reb, 10 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 2 TO
Aldridge: 20 pts (10-11 FG), 5 reb, 1 stl, 2 TO
Oden: 15 pts (7-8 FG, 1-1 FT), 6 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 1 TO
Outlaw: 11 pts (5-8 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-2 FT), 5 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk
Fernandez: 9 pts (4-5 FG, 0-1 3PT, 1-2 FT), 2 reb, 4 ast, 1 stl
Miller: 7 pts (3-7 FG, 1-2 3PT), 2 reb, 18 ast, 3 stl, 0 TO
Blake: 5 pts (2-4 FG, 1-1 3PT), 5 ast, 1 stl, 1 TO
Przybilla: 4 pts (2-3 FG), 6 reb, 2 blk, 3 TO
Batum: 2 pts (1-4 FG, 0-1 3PT), 1 reb, 1 ast
Bayless: 1 ast, 1 stl
Howard: 1 TO
Webster: DNP

Knicks Box Score
Harrington: 20 pts (9-11 FG, 2-3 3PT), 9 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 1 TO
Robinson: 18 pts (8-19 FG, 2-8 3PT), 1 reb, 7 ast, 3 stl, 2 TO
Chandler: 16 pts (8-17 FG, 0-6 3PT), 3 reb, 6 ast, 1 stl, 1 TO
Duhon: 16 pts (6-11 FG, 4-6 3PT), 3 reb, 14 ast, 1 stl, 5 TO
Jeffries: 8 pts (4-4 FG), 1 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk, 2 TO
Lee: 8 pts (4-6 FG), 10 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, 2 TO
Hughes: 4 pts (2-6 FG, 0-1 3PT), 2 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl
Douglas: 3 pts (1-7 FG, 1-5 3PT), 1 ast
Milicic: 2 pts (1-3 FG), 2 reb, 1 ast
Gallinari: 0 pts (0-1 FG)

Lee took one less shot than Toney Douglas in 22 more minutes, shot the same as Hughes in 18 more mins. Obviously he should have gotten the rock more.

The Real 2K Insider has NBA 2K10

Got it a day before release, after finding out that game stores in NYC have been selling it since Friday (wouldn't have mattered much since I worked all weekend).

Expect a roster by tomorrow.

NBA Preseason 10/4/09

Knicks 115, Nets 107

I watched this game and came away impressed with the new Knicks. They are are relatively the same team as last season, but they have many players who appear to have worked on their games over the summer which should be cause for improvement.

STUDS (NYK)
Wilson Chandler: 21 pts (7-13 FG, 3-6 3PT), 7 rebs (and a plus/minus rating of +22)
Al Harrington: 23 pts (9-11 FG, 3-4 3PT), 5 rebs
David Lee: 20 pts (9-15 FG), 9 rebs
Jared Jeffries: 11 pts (4-6 FG, 3-4 3PT)

Jeffries looked like #20 Allan Houston, which is huge for him. He hit only one three last season and has hit only 7 over the last 3 years. If he continues that this preseason he will certainly have a ratings boost going into the season, and should hold on to a rotation spot.

DUDS (NYK)
Larry Hughes: 2 pts (0-3 FG), 4 fouls (plus/minus rating of -9 in only 17 mins)
Darko Milicic: 2 pts (1-4 FG), 3 fouls (8 mins, left with injury)
Jordan Hill: 5 pts (1-8 FG), 4 rebs

Hughes picked up three fouls to start the game and the team picked up as soon as he left the court. He'll need significantly better showings to hold onto his starting job. Darko had a nice block but will have to show a bit more if he hopes to play over Jared "H20" Jeffries. Rookie Hill meanwhile did his best 2008 Jared Jeffries impression today.

STUDS (NJN)
Brook Lopez: 19 pts (5-9 FG, 9-11 FT), 4 rebs
Chris Douglas-Roberts: 21 pts (5-11 FG, 11-15 FT), 2 stls
Bobby Simmons: 16 pts (5-7 FG, 5-6 3PT), 6 rebs

I'm calling this now: Brook Lopez will be the 3rd best center in the NBA in 2010. He's so big with a skillset to match, and he's the #2 option with Vince Carter gone. CDR looks like he could contend with Courtney Lee to replace Carter in the starting lineup. The Nets are a serious sleeper team as it seems they are ALWAYS underrated this time of year. Coach Lawrence Frank has done an excellent job and the Nets have the pieces to sneak into the playoffs as an 8th seed in a season where everyone is picking them to finish 2nd to last in the conference.

DUDS (NJN)
Yi Jianlian: 9 pts (3-7 FG, 3-5 FT), 6 rebs

Yi didn't exactly have a bad game, but we heard so much Yi hype over the summer and he did not appear to be much improved at all going by this game.

Wolves 117, Bucks 103

This game was marked by terrible replacement ref officiating as there were 73 fouls called. An example of this: Jonny Flynn scored 14 points without hitting a single field goal.

STUDS (MIN)
Kevin Love: 17 pts (6-9 FG, 1-2 3PT, 4-4 FT), 13 rebs
Ryan Gomes: 13 pts (4-7 FG, 5-5 FT), 10 rebs

Love hit a three, after only hitting two last season.

DUDS (MIN)
Ramon Sessions: 9 pts, 6 rebs, 4 ast, 6 turnovers
Wayne Ellington: 2 pts (1-6 FG)

Sessions didn't have the worst game in the world but a 0.66 A/T ratio is not going to get him the starting job.

STUDS (MIL)
Hakim Warrick: 24 pts (6-8 FG, 11-15 FT), 5 rebs

Making the best case he can for the starting job.

DUDS (MIL)
Ersan Ilyasova: 5 pts (2-4 FG, 1-1 3PT), 0 rebs, 4 asts, 6 fouls (13 mins)

Fouling out in your first NBA game of the last two years is never a great first impression. Ilyasova is trying to beat out Warrick for the starting job but he's not exactly the favorite at this point.

Warriors 108, Clippers 101

Clippers shot 49% from the field but committed 26 turnovers (to 27 assists) which is not exactly the start they were looking for.

STUDS (GSW)
Stephen Curry: 5 pts (2-10 FG, 1-3 3PT), 9 asts, 5 stls, 0 fouls
Anthony Morrow: 21 pts (8-11 FG, 4-6 3PT)
Kelenna Azubuike: 19 pts (7-17 FG, 0-3 3PT, 5-5 FT), 10 rebs, 3 asts

Curry showed a bit more playmaking skills than we thought he had, and the fact that he recorded that many steals without drawing a foul is a very good sign for the defensive end. His plus/minus rating was highest on the team (+12). He could push Monta Ellis out of town with more performances like this.

DUDS (GSW)
Anthony Randolph: 10 pts (3-13 FG, 4-7 FT), 9 rebs (4 off), 2 stls, 3 blks (11 mins)
Monta Ellis: 8 pts (3-8 FG), 1 ast

Randolph had a gaudy line, yet I have him listed as a dud. The reason is his plus/minus was a team worst -2, and this probably stems from the fact that the guy hogged it up when he was out there. He missed 10 shots and 3 FTs in only 11 mins.

STUDS (LAC)
Eric Gordon: 19 pts (7-11 FG, 2-4 3PT), 3 rebs, 5 ast,
DeAndre Jordan: 22 pts (8-8 FG, 6-9 FT), 10 rebs

Jordan wasn't all roses as he had 5 fouls and 5 turnovers in his 24 mins of play. Still, a 20/10 double double on perfect FG shooting a good start. A healthy Eddy Curry puts up those lines with half as many rebounds.

DUDS (LAC)
Rasual Butler: 7 pts (2-12 FG, 1-7 3PT)
Al Thornton: 9 pts (4-9 FG), 6 fouls (7 mins)

Butler and Thornton are fighting each other for the starting SF job but neither was particularly effective today. Butler's game was a more well-rounded as he had 4 rebs, 4 ast, and 2 stls to make up for his dreadful shooting a bit.

NBA 2K10 Gameplay Analysis

At the suggestion of one of my readers, I'm going to breakdown an NBA Finals game video that was posted on pastapadre.com

http://www.pastapadre.com/2009/09/29/nba-2k10-full-nba-finals-video#more-11131

The game was played on all-star difficulty. I don't expect this to be the end all be all as all-star is only medium difficulty. Online games are typically on superstar so this is a level below what most of us are used to playing. Quarters are five minutes long. It should also be noted going in that pastapadre is a noted EA lover, had nothing positive to say about 2K10 in his writeup, prefers NBA Live, and is consequently not too good at 2K. So now that THAT disclaimer is out of the way...

This simulated season led to a Celtics/Blazers Finals matchup. The Celtics are 88 overall, the Blazers 79 overall. Pasta picks the Blazers, if only because he is used to siding with inferior franchises.

FIRST QUARTER
5:00 - Celtics win the tip. Rondo gives it to Pierce on the wing. Pasta plays off-ball with Andre Miller and watches Pierce penetrate and dump it to KG way too deep in the post. Pasta switches too late and gives us a token mistimed jump with Greg Oden en route to an easy deuce for KG.

4:40 - Miller gives it to Batum on the wing. Roy comes off a screen and Pasta makes a cross court pass that is likely picked off on a tougher difficulty (or if Ray Allen were a stronger defender). Roy drives it into the teeth of the defense and scores on Kendrick Perkins.

4:25 - Pasta actually plays man defense this time. He plays it alright until Rondo makes his move, whereupon Rondo actually loses Pasta without even using an iso move. Fortunately for Pasta, Rondo passes to KG, who misses a turnaround jumper. Unfortunately for Pasta, he contests this with Greg Oden instead of LaMarcus Aldridge, which leaves Perkins free to get an easy offensive rebound and two points.

4:00 - Roy to Batum for a semi-contested three. It's good. All-star difficulty ftw.

3:50 - KG misses a mid-range jumper. Fortunately Pasta doesn't switch in time so the CPU provides a contest and he misses the shot.
3:40 -

3:30 - Roy brings it up and dumps it down to Miller who is posting on Rondo. KG provides some help but Miller still scores on a hook. Are you ****ing kidding me?

3:20 - Celtics dump it down to Perkins. Pasta plays off-ball with Roy until he realizes that Perkins is acutally winning his post battle with Aldridge. Perkins looks like he's about to score but then gets hit with a shot clock violation.

3:03 - Aldridge post up at the FT line. Pierce inexplicably comes over to play behind KG rather than offer an actual double team. This makes zero sense since Aldridge is not a good enough post player to beat KG, and he is operating in the high post (much higher degree of difficulty than the low post). Aldridge kicks it to Batum for an open three, which is good. Pasta hasn't missed a shot yet. The socre is 10-4 after 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

Boston calls timeout. Rudy Fernandez subs in for Batum, a bit odd since Batum has 6 of the 10 points and is shooting like Fernandez as it is. Not to mention Pierce can eat Rudy alive if he gets a chance.

2:50 - Rondo gives it to KG for another mid-range jumper, which he clanks.

2:40 - Rudy tries to fast break but the Celtics get back. He gives it up to Oden who is 15 feet from the basket. Pasta's reaction is "uhhhhh now what?". He instinctively gives it up to Roy, rushes a three, and clanks it.

2:30 - Roy doesn't get back on defense and Rondo finds Allen running the floor for an easy layup.

2:20 - Pasta runs a pick and roll with Aldridge to disasterous effect (tip: if the CPU reads the play you do not force the pass with 10 seconds still left on the shot clock). He turns it over.

2:05 - Roy is guarding Pierce. Rudy is guarding Rondo. Pierce is at the 3pt line. Rudy slides off Rondo ever so slightly to give some meaningless help on Pierce. Neither player switches back when Pierce gives it up to Rondo, who hits a 10 footer in front of the recovering Rudy.

1:45 - A Fernandez head fake actually loses Pierce, but he then takes an off dribble mid-range shot that is mildly contested. Rudy is not good from mid-range or off the dribble, and misses. Oden grabs the offensive board and gets an easy two points. Had Perkins blocked him out rather than jumping for the board himself, Celtics likely get the rebound.

1:25 - Pasta dares Rondo to shoot a three. Rondo instead opts to use a KG screen, give it back to KG at the top of the college 3pt line. KG makes some triple threat moves and blows past Pasta so bad my eyes lit in anticipation of the slamma jamma that would ensue thanks to this wide open past to the lane...

...only KG passes the ball. To Kendrick Perkins, who is 12 feet from the basket. Who gives it back out to Rondo on the 3pt line. Glad to see the AI still sucks in this game. Rondo gives it back to Perkins for a 10 foot hook and is fouled by Oden.

Perkins hits the first shot, and the teams make the following substitutions.

Celtics
PG: Ray Allen
SG: Paul Pierce
SF: Tony Allen
PF: Rasheed Wallace
C: Kendrick Perkins (at the FT line and couldn't be subbed out)

Three things wrong with this lineup.
1. Ray at PG surely has a lot to do with Eddie House's butchered rating.
2. Tony Allen coming off the bench before Marquis Daniels?
3. Tony Allen (6'4" Tony Allen) playing SF in a lineup with Paul Pierce (SF Paul Pierce)

Portland's lineup is much more realistic
PG: Steve Blake
SG: Brandon Roy
SF: Rudy Fernandez
PF: Travis Outlaw
C: LaMarcus Aldridge

Getting back to the play... Perkins misses the 2nd FT. KG passed up a wide open dunk for 1/2 FTs. Smashing.

1:05 - Rudy Fernandez sets a pick for Miller. Good to see you can actually control which player is setting the picks now. Anyway Pierce makes absolutely no effort to follow Rudy on the roll which results in an easy dunk for Rudy.

0:55 - Pasta plays awful man defense with Rudy and Pierce gets an easy two from mid-range.

0:40 - Roy brings it up, tries to back down Paul Pierce, which obviously fails. Brings it out again, swings it to Blake off a screen. Roy cuts to the basket and Pierce (again, inexplicably) offers help defense on STEVE BLAKE which results in an easy deuce for the cutting Roy.

0:25 - Pasta again shows us that he is a truly terrible defensive player, and that he may not understand basketball all that well. He is playing a 2-3 zone yet is playing man defense with Roy. Perkins sets a screen at the top of the 3pt line and Roy attempts to follow Pierce over it. The correct play would have been not following (and if anything, switching to Miller who was standing right behind Perkins at the 3pt line). Roy gets screened hard and Pierce gets a wide-open look to the basket. He pro hops into the lane, which makes Pasta jump way too early with Aldridge, and Pierce gets an easy two points.

0:10 - Rudy runs to the corner for a mid-range jumper. Tony Allen who is supposed to be a solid perimeter defender, looks like he's got lead feet and can't keep up with Rudy.

0:03 - Ray walks the ball up court for a second before realizing OH SHOOT THERES ONLY TWO SECONDS NOW. He launches a pass to Pierce, who takes two dribbles and calmly drains a 28 footer. Unfortunately, because Allen decided to waste that extra second, it doesn't count. Hooray for 2K's impeccable CPU clock management.

FIRST QUARTER STATS
Blazers 18, Celtics 13

Blazers
Batum: 6 points (2-2 FG, 2-2 3PT)
Rudy: 4 points (2-3 FG)
Roy: 4 points (2-3 FG, 0-1 3PT)
Oden: 2 points (1-1 FG)
Miller: 2 points (1-1 FG)
Team: 18 points (8-10 FG, 2-3 3PT, 0-0 FT)

Celtics
Pierce: 4 points (2-2 FG)
Perkins: 3 points (1-1 FG, 1-2 FT)
Garnett: 2 points (1-3 FG)
Rondo: 2 points (1-1 FG)
R. Allen: 2 points (1-1 FG)
Team: 13 points (6-8 FG, 0-0 3PT, 1-2 FT)

Both teams combine for 14-18 FG. Celtics do not attempt a three despite the fact that they take more than most teams (though tough to fault given how crappy Pasta's man defense was).

What's encouraging is that the Celtics shot that well because Pasta's defense was truly horrendous and it was clear he had no idea what he was doing on this end. What is discouraging is that Pasta scored seemingly at will. The shots he missed were bad shots, and he still hit a few of these. Moreover, the league's top defensive team offered next to no resistance and were constantly beaten on screens.

All in all, it looks like more of what we saw in 2K9, with less dunking but even worse defense. If CPU controlled Tony Allen can't keep up with Rudy Fernandez, I can only imagine how easily Kobe and LeBron would score on him.
